Bioshock 15m gameplay vid

This game is looking great, especially those water effects. Lots of Fallout atmosphere going on there too (check out PipBoy at 10m25s!). I can't wait for this one to come out: I can't muster myself to play System Shock 2 due to the horrible animations and graphics, but now there's a great excuse... Bioshock is coming to town!

I was skulking about on the TTLG forums when I saw this. I would just like to say that despite it being early version footage: EEEEEeeeeee! *drool*

Neat video and I certainly respect him, but the narrator sounds like such a dork... "The size of your sexual organs! Hee hee hee *snort*"
I like how the Little Sister calls the Big Daddy "Mr. Bubbles."

I watched the vid and wasn't completely sold on it. It does have awesome water effects, interesting A.I interaction, and a very creppy atmosphere. I'll definitely ask this to my watch list!
On a nit-picky side note, did anyone else find it weird that it took more armor piercing bullets to kill the splicer women then it did regular anti-personnel bullets? One would think that the larger, stronger rounds would do more damage to her body then the others.
Lag used to be a lot worse back in the day. Hell, it took Jesus 3 days to respawn.

This game looks like it has tons of atmosphere... I worry there might be too much though. It seemed garrish, distracting almost. I can't wait to stop and read all the posters, but I might get ticked if I splatter sister all over them before I get a chance to.

I thought armor piercing bullets were designed to stay in one piece on impact in order to get throught armor, and an anti-personnel round would deform and break apart on impact to cause more trauma.
It looked a bit boring. Apart from the art direction, I didn't see anything particularly original.

OK, here comes the gun nut stuff...
Armor-piercing bullets have a pointed tip and are made of nice strong materials, as they are designed to, well, pierce armor.
JHP (jacketed hollow-point) have flat tips and are made of softer material.
As a result, when you hit a soft target with an AP round it tends to go right through, leaving a small hole. A JHP has a broader striking surface so it does more damage to a soft target on the initial impact and has greater resistance as it moves through the body, meaning it's more likely to stay in the body, which in turn means that all the energy of the bullet goes into the target (whereas if a bullet passes through the body it still has energy pushing it onward). The force of the impact also tends to make a JHP expand slightly, or "mushroom," making it extremely painful.
This is related to one of the reasons revolvers tend to pack more of a punch against soft targets than an automatic; they have a slower muzzle spin velocity, therefore aren't as effective at penetrating the target entirely. So the bullet stays in.
Hypothetical situation, if someone is shot in the shoulder by a .357AP round from an automatic, it'll usually leave a small hole at the entry point and a larger hole at the exit point. If they're shot in the shoulder by a .357JHP from a revolver, it'll look like their shoulder exploded.
Of course if you use JHP against an armored target it's much more likely to shatter or bounce off without penetrating at all. Also, bullets are a lot like footballs; if you just chuck them, they wobble all over the place. The more spin you give them, the straighter the path. So an automatic pistol will be more accurate over greater range than a revolver.

That said, why can't the skins on the enemies react to muzzle spin? Wouldn't it be great if the ragdoll and death effects were different for each ammo type? I'd send that to the developers, but... I'm feeling lazy.

I'm sure they'll do something like that someday. For now, companies seem to have enough trouble getting one type of ammo to look right, nevermind two. Or if you want to get really technical, there are dozens of kinds of ammunition, each with their own slight signatures.
Maybe some day you'll be able to look at a corpse and say, "Hmm... That looks like 5.56mm caseless. Must be a Super Duper Truper around here somewhere."

The art direction and ambition of the project has me sold, provided I have a system to play it on. Given that this is the team that made System Shock 2, I'd say they'll have the atmosphere nailed by the time it ships.

I am excited about this one now. I can see why they were proud of the water, it looks more real than Coca Cola's Dasani.
The voiceover couldve been more polished in the movie, but I suppose they wanted it to be that 'casual, talk directly to the gamer' kinda feel. Pip Boy was there, just like you said, what a surprise.
It seems a natural extension of the old Looking Glass game design philosophy. I was always a fan of their games... Terra Nova still sits upstairs in 'my collection' along with a bunch of others.
This game has such a unique flavor to it, its good to see they have more marketing behind them, they will need it to get the word out and get gamers interested. Personally, I'm hooked. PC or 360, PC or 360.. oh thank heavens I have time to get over the dilemma.

I dig it. It looks like a prettier Shock 2 in a different setting. The story is sure to be broad and hopefully deep. The only thing that bugs me though is that the npc's seem a little simple and there seems to be little, if any, variation. Are all the slicers going to be women in green dresses? You'd think a utopia would have a little more variety wouldn't you? Aside from the relationships between the npc's, everything seemed to have a Shock 2 equivalent. Different rounds, different upgrade paths, security cameras, upgrade stations, slicers=hybrids, etc. Maybe they have only shown early game NPC's.

Green dresses are ideal. And I don't remember any Big Daddies or Little Sisters in System Shock 2. Or anything that wasn't hostile to you, for that matter.

After watching the video yesterday, I can tell this game is going to be the next big blockbuster hit. It will be sold out in all stores on the day of launch. And that's only from the video footage. When word of mouth spreads, the sales will keep climbing.
Their sense of style and design is impeccable, the audio will be perfect, and the gameplay has just enough of SS2 flavor to lure in both new and familiar players.
That looked pretty awesome. I'll be buying this the day it comes out.

Why are they ideal? Are we to believe that only women became slicers? If they revered genetic modification, then why did they get pigeonholed into 3 classes that look virutally identical within their class? Hopefully, Levine's just being tightlipped about what else is encountered as the game/plot progresses or it's going to wind up getting repetitive.
Well, if we want to get nitpicky, the apparitions weren't hostile. Didn't realize I'd be taken so literally.
