F.E.A.R. Expansion demo
Monday, September 18th, 2006 - 11:26pm
Anybody tried it? It's available here, here, and here. In other words, go find it yourself. ![]()
I'm on Interval 6 of the original game, having had it for about a week. I love the action, but the "creepy" bits are a little annoying. That's both because I'm a weenie, and because they're not very scary.
The only one that's really got me so far is the one where you climb down the ladder, and as your view spins around to mount the ladder, that stupid little tart is suddenly in front of you, with the big screechy sound-effect. It's made me scared of all that ladders in the rest of the game. ![]()
Anyway, any impressions of the demo?

The ladder scare is, I think, widely considered one of the only really effective ones in the game. The other one that got me was later on and in the general area of an elevator.
The game really wasn't that scary, but it was pretty atmospheric at times. The level design is on the repetitive side. That's not a lie. There's lots of the water treatment plant followed by lots of the office building. There's not a lot of variation.
But the game.. still fun. I recently played through the whole thing over again.

I really liked the game, it's gameplay reminded me of Deus Ex. I loved Deus Ex. Not really scary, rather creepy....
Neither switch is aware of the other, so each happily forwards the same frame
back and forth between its segments.
I loved it graphically but I does get rather repetative. Plus, I really really disliked the machine guns out of the ceiling thing. I god mode through that part. I want to kill people, not mechanics. Never finished the game, got bored a little near the end and haven't touched it anymore.
I did play the free MultiPlayer expansion for the game. But that wasn't much fun either, the graphics still rock, but there are way better online shooters then this game. But it is free, so I can't moan too much, uninstalling I can tho (and did).
I don't watch, I interact!
I just got scared again. I turned into a cubicle, and with no warning whatsoever, that little girl came scampering accross the floor at me. Ugh.

Is that the one where she's like crabwalking on all fours sideways? *shudder*

Hey come on, no spoilers! I'm still to play the original game, I'm just waiting for it to come down in price a bit.
Played the demo (that's why I'm here), a bit short but fun.
When you guys talk about repetitiveness, do you mean in F.E.A.R. or in this expansion? Cause I heard the expansion level design was somewhat more boring than in the original game.

FEAR was a fun romp, pretty minimal on the scares, good action. The ending bits were pretty awesome, and one of the few times the scare tatic actually worked. I probably didn't enjoy it to its fullest, running it at 1024 with 24fps (if I was lucky) the entire time.

It's not really a spoiler if you have absolutely no idea when it might happen in the game. But fine, we won't talk about having fun anymore

No biggie, but my memory tends to store this kind of information. So I'll be waiting for them to happen until they do.

They mean the original game. FEAR's level design is absolutely awful both from an aesthetic perspective and from a pacing perspective. The only thing that carries FEAR at all is the fantastic combat.
My days of not taking you seriously have certainly come to a middle.

Yeah, the expansion's not out for another month anyway. The drab level design was the major complaint about the original, so Timegate has supposedly addressed that to some extent in the expansion. We'll see, I guess. At $30 it better be a kick-ass expansion.

I enjoyed my play through Fear. But I think a lot of that came from anticipation of scary things, that never really materialized. I remember thinking the AI was pretty impressive the way it flanked me.

Welp, just finished the game. Pretty cool ending, though I heard everyone ranting and raving about the last hour or so, and I was a little disapointed by it. Didn't seem like anything better than the rest of the game.
**Vague and Mild Spoiler alert!**
One thing I was really pleased with was the face-off with Fettel. I hadn't thought, after all that chasing, that they could possibly have made it satisfying, but by going in a different direction with it (IE: not a boss battle,) I thought it was one of the coolest moments in the game. And the bit right at the end, watching the shockwave, was amazing to behold.

I really dug the confrontation with fettel too. It's effect on all the enemy soldiers was pretty creepy too the first time I came across some of them.
As for the last hour, I just felt like the atmosphere really got cranked up there at the end. The crazy giant ball prison thing, the entire trip back to the surface, the explosion, all of it together just seemed really cool to me.

That was my least favorite part of the game. You're just running through hallways one shotting hundreds of ghosts. Felt like it turned into a crappy Serious Sam mod at that point.

(I think the thread deserves a spoiler tag by now.)
I agree with Sinatar. Just when the story actually started to become interesting, they decided to shoot the action in the foot.
Still, nailing soldiers to walls has its attraction.
And if I haven't seen further, it's because those bloody giants blocked my sight.
Regarding the actual expansion demo I was really underwhelmed. The level design was even more boring and boxy and the scares were more a case of "OH GOD BLOOD All OVER THE WALLS BE SCARED NOW!" than anything more subtle. Maybe the expansion will be better overall but that demo was not a good way of representing it.
One of the few really effective scares in the whole thing.
FEAR's big thing, for me, is the AI. It's not great (I don't think any AI would be as clever as a real life opponent), but there were several times when I thought: crap, I've been flanked!
