Shadowrun

So. Setting aside the use of the lisence, and setting aside the fact that you'll have PC and console gamers playing together. We're setting that aside.
This game actually sounds pretty cool. Everything I've heard from people who've PLAYED it has been quite positive, with their main beef being the visuals and art style. The integration of utility magic into tradtional online shooters for interesting strategic purposes, actually sounds like it could be quite cool.
And it might be a game I could play with all you 360 people, even before I get one.
Anyone else coming around on this game? I don't know if I'd say I'm excited. No, I wouldn't say that. But I'm hopeful.

So, we're setting all that stuff aside? I don't really have anything to say, then.

Well, I would consider both of those things issues which are only important from the standpoint of an observer. They're ideological problems. One doesn't affect the game itself in the least, and the other has been widely reported to be surprisingly well implimented. So yeah, I think we can set "all that stuff" aside. Because I don't think "all that stuff" is particularly important to the game itself.

Well putting all of THAT aside... how about that thing about where the licensing is going to screw with the Shadowrun game? And that supposedly consolers can play alongside PCers? How about that?
I loved the books. Never played the game. I got no hangups about licensing. It sounds intriguing and I would certainly subscribe to any Newsletter they would care to publish.

It might be the first game I've considered "too ugly looking to play". It's not just that I don't like seeing a good license being soiled. The art direction -from what I've seen- causes me hurt. As far as the gameplay I'll really have nothing to say until there's a demo.

They revamped the graphics from E3, it's actually looking a lot better visually.

This preview on IGN makes the game sound very very cool, like a Counter-Strike with RPG-style abilities that stick with you as you play (but not when you log out).
We shall grapple with the ineffable, and see if we may not eff it after all.

If you want something similar now, look for CS:S or DoD:S servers running the WC3 mod.

The trouble here is that all those people who'd have been baited by the license - myself one of them - can't just set everything aside.
And if I haven't seen further, it's because those bloody giants blocked my sight.
Yeah, I mean, the license is so esoteric now (the last Shadowrun game was on what, SNES?), it's pretty clear that they're using it as a draw. You can't say, "Hey, look, Shadowrun! Now ignore that it's Shadowrun."

So let me get this straight.. Graphics now matter over gameplay? so if this game has great gameplay and its fun to play.. its not good because the graphics suck.. and it uses a license that should be used for an RPG?
Ok just making sure I'm keeping up here.

I think they should just rename the game...

My only worry is that if this shadowrun game doesn't do well then that might be it for a shadowrun game on the 360, namely a shadowrun rpg. I don't have a problem with the graphics, though I don't think they are amazing. All I've seen is multiplayer vids of the game. I hope it has a good singleplayer storyline to play through.
yeah pretty much why I used the word "if" as we simply dont know yet.. but writing a game off for lack of graphics and possibly not using the license for an RPG seems.. odd... or confusing for lack of a better word.

The trick with multi-class gameplay (and that sounds like what's going on here) is balance. While I'm still holding out hope for this title, I'm nervous that they'll cheap out on play-testing and leave some glaring balance issues in the final build.

I'm not a fan of fantasy or magic-related games but this all sounds very interesting and I'm adding it to my list of games to watch...
You can unlock magical abilities and technological items that can give you all sorts of advantages. For instance, if you use enhanced vision to see opponents on the other side of a wall, you can teleport behind the group and slay one with a shotgun or katana to the back, and then teleport away before that person's friends can claim vengeance upon you. Or, if you're caught between two enemies, you can transform into smoke and watch the two enemies hit each other as the bullets pass through you. Other magical abilities let you summon a Tree of Life, which has a healing radius around it. You can also use a strangler vine to clog up a chokepoint with giant crystals that slow or even trap enemies. Tech items such as wired reflexes make you a lot faster, so if you're armed with a sword, you can use it to deflect incoming bullets, while glider wings give you limited amounts of flight. Magic and tech are meant to give you a lot more flexibility in how you play the game, but they're not really weapons in and of themselves. Instead, you'll rely on an arsenal of familiar conventional weapons, such as submachine guns, assault rifles, shotguns, sniper rifles, miniguns, and rocket launchers. The idea is that, when taking the conventional and mixing it with the unconventional, you get all sorts of interesting new dynamics.

There was a Mega CD version released in '96. The Genesis version (best one, I think, though I haven't played the Mega CD game) was released in '94, and the SNES version was released in '93.

I think people often fail to acknowledge the HUGE influence this (FREE) game has had on online FPSs. Shadowrun is a direct spiritual successor to it, as is Battlefield: 2. All the more reason to look forward to Quake Wars IMO. Splash Damage is a developer that is flying under the radar right now, but is likely to soon explode on the scene.

I think MS made a mistake by not releasing a Shadowru RPG. It would help their position in the marketplace more than this title will. The Xbox doesn't have a shortage of online fps. I am holding out hope for the game. This is a game that I really want to like since I love Shadowrun. I'll buy it, no matter what, just to support the franchise.

All right. Imagine EA published a new LotR game. It doesn't include the Ring, Gandalf, Sauron, any other of the major characters, turns orcs into oversized rats, restructures Middle Earth so that only the vague shoreline stays the same... But hey! Elves and dwarves! The fans of the books will love it!
I have no idea whether this will be a good game. If so, I might play it, depending on the state of my wallet. But this is not SR and I don't see why they had to drag the franchise into this.
And if I haven't seen further, it's because those bloody giants blocked my sight.
I agree with you, and I'll most likely buy it also just to support the franchise. I just hate doing that though cause sometimes I get burned bad.
No I understand where your coming from.. but at the same time Shadowrun is a pretty fringe IP.. chances are most people who see it will have zero clue what Shadowrun is all about.. so its not like they are messing with a franchise like LoTR which has a huge exposure.

So as long as it's not a popular IP, there's no need to actually use the IP that you're licensing, basing, and naming your game on?
I'm trying to come up with an assessment of that without being overly judgemental. It just seems to defy logic. What's the point of bothering with a license if you're not actually going to use it?
I know zero about the Shadowrun license.. so I have no clue what in the game has anything (if at all to do) with the Shadowrun license.. perhaps some of the powers you get in the game are based on the pen and paper RPG (thats what it was right? or was it a CRPG on the Genesis first?) perhaps some of the classes in the game are based on classes you could be.
Whatever the case.. my point is that in the end its such a fringe license that 90% of the people out there will have no clue that this game is based on some rpg.. they will hopefully say wow this game looks cool.. and start playing it.. then say.. whats this Shadowrun.. and then perhaps check that out.. so who knows.. maybe this game sparks some interest in the license... and you may end up getting the RPG your all so insistant on.
bottom line.. IF (again notice the IF) the game is fun.. and plays well.. despite the graphics.. and ends up being relatively successful.. I'm not sure how that in any way shape or form is a bad thing.

Guru has a point. My first exposure to Shadowrun was the SNES game. Currently, I own pretty much every Shadowrun sourcebook released to date and love the RPG.
That said, I'm still pissed at this game. Not because it was built as a team-based shooter - I like team-based shooters, and the genre somewhat fits the license. I'm angry because they threw out decades of developed backstory, characters, and setting and replaced it with a hacky, generic truncation of the established story.
Dragons? Gone. Matrix? Gone. Conspiracy and corporate double-dealing? Gone. What are we left with? Magic, Guns, and Elves.
"Social," you may be thinking, "surely it can't be all bad?" You're right. There are some things about this game that I like.
1) It's a team-based shooter. As I've said, I enjoy the genre. I would have preferred an RPG, but I'll take it.
2) The implementation of magic. It's not used as a weapon, but rather as a tool to support your team or enhance their capablities.
3) The gadgets look like they're going to make interesting changes in gameplay dynamics. In particular, the glider wings. I see shades of Tribes here, but Tribes was a great game.
4) 360 vs. PC play. I prefer keyboard & mouse for my FPS gaming, but only being able to play against other PC-owners narrows the playing field. This way, I'll have a wider variety of opponents.

It's not a bad thing for the game itself on a purely gameplay-based perspective, but it's a bad thing for people who had hoped for a Shadowrun game.
It's like with D&D; we keep getting D&D action rpg's because they sell well (can't argue with that) but the Dark Alliance games, for instance, aren't actually true D&D games. Don't misunderstand me, I love the Dark Alliance games and am eagerly hoping we see a Live co-op enabled DA3 on the 360. However, what I'd really like to see is another game with the turn-based true to D&D combat system of Temple of Elemental Evil, but with an actual story and non-buggy (or at least non-crippled) release.
However, even the Dark Alliance games pay more homage to the license of D&D (via creatures, locations, classes, spells, feats, etc) than it sounds like the "Shadowrun" game is going to do.
