Alt-Tab Game?
Right googlers - who can recommend me a decent game for while I'm at work.
I need to be able to alt-tab out the game at a moments notice (so that, you know I can still pay the rent 'n stuff) without screwing up the game. Also can't install any software (not legitimately anyway) so I'm guessing Java's the way to go.
Something turn based seems appropriate - but probably would need to be with AI, 'cause I might not alt-tab back into it for a few hours, which could stretch the patience of any other players.
Strategy preferred, but no puzzle games please people!
(BTW - my job doesn't involve anybodys' personal safety or the security of any nation - so no guilt trips allowed)

Hardly a strategy game, but I can't stop playing Dolphin Olympics. My best score is about 9.1 million. If you click the menu button, it pauses the game; making for a pretty quick transition back to fake work.

Yeah, been following the other thread for this - it does look my type of thing if I can get my matrix eyes going. Seems a bit heavy for dipping in and out of though?
Sooooo loving this already! Good call guys

These days you can run most games in "Windowed mode" making alt-tab work seamlessly. If your work comp doesn't have a decent graphics card I wouldn't try any 3D games.
Here is another fun flash game for you. It even lets you do upgrades:

If you want to be able to alt-tab quickly, you're limited to in-browser games. I'd suggest Yahoo Games and Popcap.

Dwarf Fortress in window mode. Don't even need to alt-tab.
I was big into DiceWars for about a week, then I figured out the underlying rules and now don't bother playing. The only times I've lost have been when I got wiped out in the first couple of turns. Neat game, but needs better AI rules.

Combat Mission has become my favorite in-class Alt-Tab game. Take notes, fight for Mamayev Kurgan. take notes, and so on.

Plenty of fun! Hadn't played that before. But it seems like they've handed the AI loaded dice.
I'll probably see if DF will run from my MP3 player, then may make the switch to that, though. =)
I loves me some Dwarven Fortress.

Another great flash game is Motherload. You mine ore, and can buy upgrades to your mining machine with what you earn. There's a big suprise when you get to the bottom!
You can't pause this one, but it's really addictive: Differences (NSFW?). You look for differences between two pictures. A warning: some of the pictures may be mildly NSFW - no nudity, but some bikini type pics.

Hehe... The really cool thing is that it keeps your points by IP address. The next time you play from the same machine you will be able to reallocate all your earned points towards upgrades.
Keep posting fun flash games guys! I'm always on the lookout for new ones.

I have discovered Zen. I'm going to town on this game with 'Don't Fear the Reaper' going. "More Cowbell!"
Kinda like when I was doing the same thing with Crimsonland and Daft Punk's 'Around the World.'

DEFCON! Err when it comes out. Apparently has easy alt-tabbing etc to hide it from your boss, as well as a real-time mode so you don't lose out by everything moving too fast.
The more I play Dicewars the more I see the dice rolls as being skewed toward the computer. I'm tempted to write down my rolls versus theirs, just to keep track.
And the two computer players won't attack each other. Even when every territory is 'eight-stacked', both focus on me.
Frustrating.
