Rush fans: a little something to brighten your day
Eight songs completed for the new album.
The new one is due out "early 2007," whatever that means. I am a ridiculously jaded listener when it comes to rock music these days, but Rush is the one rock band for which I am still a total fanboy. I can't wait to hear what they're working on.
Rush has penned eight songs for its next studio album, which should be out in early 2007, according to drummer Neil Peart. The artist tells Billboard.com his lyrics for the as-yet-untitled set were greatly influenced by his motorcycle journeys throughout the United States, chronicled in the new book "Roadshow: Landscape With Drums."Peart says he was struck by the ubiquity of religious billboards that have sprung up on America's highways, which got him thinking about some weighty topics. "Just seeing the power of evangelical Christianity and contrasting that with the power of fundamentalist religion all over the world in its different forms had a big effect on me," he says.
"You try to put your own way of seeing the world into some kind of congruence with other peoples, and that's difficult for me," he admits. "I mean, I see the world in what I think to be a perfectly obvious and rational way, but when you go out into it and see the way other people think and behave, and express themselves on church signs, you realize, 'Well, I'm not really part of this club.'"
"I looked for the good side of faith," Peart says. "To me it ought to be your armor, something to protect you and something to console you in dark times. But it's more often being turned into a sword, and that's one big theme I'm messing with."

WOOOO!!! WOOOOO!!! and, I guess, just a little more WOOOO!!!! This news definitely made my morning (and apparently turned me into a howler monkey, too).
I was kinda disappointed with Vapor Trails, but, you know, that's Rush for you. If you don't like what they've done, just wait an album and they'll try something different. Besides, when you've put out 17 billion albums, a few are bound to be less rockin' than others. I can't wait to hear the next set.

Oh HELL yeah! I've a massive Rush fan and have been since high school. I can't wait for new material. I didn't like Vapor Trails as much either, but that album was based on a very different dynamic which was the horrible tragedies that happened in Neil Peart's life. You can tell that easily by listening to the lyrics and the "angry and sad" nature of the songs. But I like it in its own way.
On another amazing note, I was checking around for something last night and I found out that Dream Theater has another concert DVD out! This one from Radio City Music Hall where they had a more enthusiastic crowd that Live At Budokan. I almost started hyper-ventilating when I saw this because Budokan is still one of the best concert DVDs I own. When I go to my home store to ring stuff in today, I'm grabbing three copies as I know there's two friends who will immediately want it when they find out it exists. I might pick up Rush's 3 DVD as well.

oh, hehe, I thought you were gonna mention something about Rush Limbaugh...
Of whom, I'm not a fan (just for clarification)
I was just curiously expecting a cheeky thread taking him down a few more notches than he did himself.

A Seattle rock radio station had bumper stickers a few years back that said "RUSH is a BAND." I'm not a bumper sticker kind of guy, but I would've sported that one with pride.

I've always loved the philosophy behind Rush. I'm looking forward to this album.

Rush helped me survive high school. I still think Red Barchetta is one of the best rock tunes out there.
Good news!
Are you gettin' there Rabbit, are you gettin' there now?
Yes Lord, Lord, I'm gettin' there now.
I hear that. When I was in high school, I thought Neil Peart had written "Subdivisions" just for me. He understood my soul, man. He got it.
I love Red Barchetta. Love, love, love it. But my favorite? "Dreamline". Followed very closely by "Fly By Night". And "Spirit of Radio". And "Cygnus X-1". And "Bastille Day". Oh, who the hell am I kidding, everything they did between the years 1974 and 1994, I love.

I'm a fan of any band that's been around as long as Aerosmith, but doesn't suck like Aerosmith. Having said that, I'm really not that familar with Rush's work. All I really know is that the name Geddy Lee rocks and that 2112 is the album I should start with. Is this correct?

Meh, I think you actually have to work up to 2112; it's a little prog-gy, and very 70's, so if you haven't built up your tolerance, then it might turn you off. I say pick up one of their greatest hits albums or one of the retrospectives; I love the 1974-80's Retrospective album, myself.

My intro to Rush was Chronicles.

I too was disappointed with Vapor Trails - the only one of theirs I really don't like, yet I look forward to the new one, whenever that comes out.
Yes, they've been pelted with more than their fair share of "criticism," although if not for Geddy Lee who knows if I ever would have finally picked up the bass. Back in the days of having an untrained ear and the absolute worst stereo equipment possible, I wasn't even sure what a bass sounded like.
After hearing the entire Moving Pictures album, I felt like a neanderthal being handed fire for the first time.

Rush Chronicles is indeed a great starting point. "Spirit of the Radio" is probably my favorite of theirs. I also really like "Time Stand Still", which makes me very melancholy.

That's a great f*cking song.
edit: also, Chronicles is a decent place to start, although it doesn't include anything past Presto (1989). I'd say maybe Chronicles + Counterparts (1993), which is (I think) their strongest 90's release. Or maybe Chronicles + Moving Pictures (1980), which is an all-around classic.
edit again: Also, I really like Presto a lot, but it seems that most Rush fans differ with me on that.

The people have spoken, and Chronicles will be in my possession soon. If it sucks, I'll blame all of you.

Admission time: Counterparts is the last Rush album that I bought. I liked it well enough, and it certainly beat the pants off of Roll The Bones...but it didn't seem as god-like as the stuff on Chronicles (which probably isn't fair, since Chronicles is a best-of).
I was more or less introduced to Rush by my High School American Lit teacher, who played "The Trees" for our class one day, and who would sometimes write Rush quotes on my work before returning it (we had this back and forth where I would put a quote from some (non-Rush) song on anything I was handing in, and he would often do the same in return. One of the coolest teachers of my life, for sure).
There was also a really great hard rock station back then called Z-Rock. I think it may have been a national station? We only got it in Houston for a few years. Anyway, it played tons of hard rock and heavy metal, and was the perfect mix for that period of my life. They played Rush on a fairly regular basis (as well as playing a couple hours of nothing but Metallica every Friday or Saturday, which was like a religious experience for my friends at the time).
At some point I joined those mail-order CD clubs, and among my first selections was Chronicles. So it seems like I started at the top. I also have 2112, Roll the Bones, and Counterparts. As I said, I like Counterparts, but it just didn't seem as epic as the stuff on Chronicles did.
Still, I played the heck out of Chronicles in those days, and still rock out to hear some of those songs again when the radio plays one, or when the mood strikes me. I should probably consider buying some of the individual albums whose work is sampled on Chronicles. Suggestions?

I'd agree that Chronicles is a good representation of their past and Counterparts is probably their best work from the 90s. I'm actually annoyed because I seem to have lost my Chronicles album which I've had since high school and was the CD I listened to the most back then. I have no idea where I put it. Grr. Has anyone seen 3, their latest concert DVD? I'm thinking of picking it up with the new DT concert, but I'm wondering how good it is. Rush In Rio was good, but didn't blow me away, particularly because a lot of it took place during daylight where you couldn't see the light show.

They put on a hell of a light show - I remember when Kat and I went to see them a few years back and remarking "Lasers! Look, it's really lasers!" It was awesome.
Rush puts on amazing technical shows. When I saw them here, I was blown away by the amount of lights they had. The programming could have been better, but was still amazing. You want to see the most amazing lighting show ever though, go buy Pink Floyd's Pulse on DVD.

Ah Rush........... take me back when my parents had to foot the bill....those were the days..... Starting from 2112 I pretty much liked every song off of every album to Power Windows until Hold Your Fire when i liked about only about half the songs....then I kind of fizzled out after that. .... maybe 1 or 2 songs I liked. Ill have to give Presto on down another listen or 2 to see if there are any gems I missed. I tried a little while back but nothing stuck, but I did see them in Seattle(Auburn) when they were in town, they played Between the Wheels live...I love that solo, it sends me into epilectic air guitar seizure whenever i hear it....along with countless others by Alex(can you say Digital Man solo!!!) Im not sure what Chronicles has on it (Rush has about 8 Chronicles type albums right?)If I were going to recomend Rush albums to the causual fan I would say get Permanent Waves ,Moving Pictures, Signals, Grace under Pressure and Power Windows, to me that represents the Peak and Best of Rush
YYZ is going to be included in Guitar Hero 2.
And supposedly you can play the bass parts.
