CGW Podcast: DefCon is fun ...

So the boys over at CGW seemed to really like the new, as of yet to be released, Introversion game called DefCon - Everyone Dies. It's a multi-player only game that is going to distributed via Steam for about $14.95 (US).

Supposedly it is a lot of fun and looks a lot like the computer game used in the movie Wargames.

Anyone else semi-interested in this one?

I have both Uplink and Darwinia, bought em both when they first came out and loved them. Introversion are brilliant at their particular niche of game design and I look forward to Defcon with much anticipation. Definitely a first day purchase for me if I can.

After Darwinia, I'd buy Introversion Crap in a Sack, because they'd find a way to make it fun and addictive.

Yeah, I'm pretty sold on this one.

We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea.

Player 1: Dude, don't hit the button or I'll hit the button.
Player 2: Alright, cool, I won't if you won't.
Player 1: I'm serious, don't.
Player 2: I won't... you're not gonna, though, right? 'Cause I'll hit the button.
Player 1: So will I. Totally wipe you out. It'd be worth it.
Player 2: So let's not do it then.
Player 1: Alright, fine. No button hitting.

...

Player 2: I gotta pee.
Player 1: Me too...
Player 2: This game blows.

I cannot wait to get my hands on DefCon, it's a Day One purchase for me, but I didn't realize that it was multiplayer only. I could have sworn 1Up.com has screenshots of a player facing imminent annihlation at the hands of CPU2, CPU3, etc. They are also hosting some gameplay videos showing an ICBM exchange between the players.

This game looks an awful lot like New World Computing's Nuclear War that was on the Amiga and DOS. If it's anything even close to that, but with multiplayer capabilities, I will be all over this one. Uplink and Darwinia were amazing games and these guys definitely deserve support.

I always have this bizzare facination with Introversion games. They look so cool that I want to play them, I end up playing them, am kinda turned off by some gameplay annoyances, 6 months later I play the game again and am blown away by it, seeing none of the flaws. This has happened with Uplink and Darwinia, hope I can skip the initial steps of the process this time around.

Hee, I saw the headline and thought you meant "DefCon", which is indeed, fun.

I just bought the Uplink/Darwinia $20 deal on Steam and started the tutoriol in Uplink - is there any way to increase the font size?

You know, the real tragedy here is going to be all the young kids this game will train to enjoy nuclear war. I can't believe they're letting Introversion get away with this.

I was interested until I saw that it's multiplayer only

It looks fun, but without the ability to fire it up on occasion by my old lonesome it loses some of my attention.

From Eurogamer:
Quote:
Eurogamer: While multiplayer seems to be the focus, is there any single-player content planned at all? What form will it take?

Chris Delay: We're providing a Defcon computer player - effectively a bot. You can include as many of them as you like in the games you are setting up. So you could play a normal game of Defcon against (say) three enemy computer players.

The single-player also contains a tutorial for learning the game, with computer players as the enemy. But Defcon is pretty easy to learn to play - just very hard to win.

Exactly. I know no other way of making the font bigger other than making the pixels huge (using a really low res.) I believe the Uplink interface is skinable (theres a Theme option in the settings) so you may want to check around the official forums for info about that.

You will be in when 20 GWJers are all playing online. Come on, when you hear; "Do you want to play a game?", then you will be all in. Again, the CGWers have been playing an advance copy and seem to really like it.

Thanks for the info, I found a skin that made it much easier to view (http://www.modlink.net/).

Not real sure as to how the game mechanics work, but I'm fairly certain there will be no urinary track blockage during play.
