BF2142 Open(er) Beta
Friday, September 8th, 2006 - 1:08pm
As of 6 minutes ago, FilePlanet offered another 10,000 beta keys for BF2142. All that's required to get one is a GameSpy ID (even the free kind). It's first-come, first-serve.
I was surprised at how little lag I encountered getting mine. I guess it just goes to show you what happens when you open beta registration during work hours.
...You get Lazy Lobster + 9,999 kids in your beta.
NOTE: This is not a doodle bug.

Got one.

I'll see you there, Rich. In the FUTURE.

Also got one, now I get to wait in line at fileplanet for 26 minutes, which will probably translate into 4 hours of real time.
My days of not taking you seriously have certainly come to a middle.

Mmm in, but the account creation server in game is obviously in a bad state. Looking forward to seeing if this baby does anything exciting!
The key was surprisingly easy to get. I'll have to download it when I get home. Anyone going to get on a server tonight?
I've been in beta, but haven't bothered trying to make a user name again, since it didn't work a few days ago. The Computer Gaming World guys took a dump on the game in their latest Podcast, so my enthusiasm is pretty well drained. I'll wait for impressions from you guys before I put any more energy into it
Certis beat me to it. - Elysium
I've been in that too. Played it for 5 minutes. Meh.

What the hell? To register, you have to answer a bunch of questions, including "favorite kit". That's fine, except they don't list goddamn MEDIC as an option! Those medic-hating bastards!
In addition, the whole page is designed not to work in Firefox.

I think I'm going to skip BF2142 being that I've already shelled out $100 for BF2 and the Special Forces, Armored fury, and Euro expansion packs, which are all still in desperate need of more patching. Thanks EA for spending all your time on the next buggy enstallment of the Battleglitch series!
Lag used to be a lot worse back in the day. Hell, it took Jesus 3 days to respawn.

Got accepted to the beta, never played the original Battlefield, so we'll see if I actually like the game....
Wannabe priest with a sword....
I too was quite gutted at their lack of Medic choice. Stupid quiz, I lied through half of it. Funny about Firefox though, I had no problems using the page at all.
edit: Still unable to create an account in game either... blah.
Gots me a key as well. I will have to wait till Tuesday to use it though. My pc is being delivered on Monday, so hopefully when I get it all hooked up I will be ready to roll.

Not that I'm going to buy it (*punches self in the face for even considering the purchase*) but when is the official release date for it??

If I can get it downloaded and installed without glitches, I'll try and get on.
You guys can use your existing EA accounts which you presumably have from BF2, no reason to make a new one.
As for the game, seems pretty cool. It's battlefield with a sci fi skin which I happen to find more appealing then the faux military setting of the prior games.

That's the problem is we can't (well, atleast some of us apparently). I tried to use my current account it said it didn't exist. I thought maybe it was a different database so I then tried to make a new account using the same name and it tells me it already exists. Okay.. so I try to go through their username/password retrieval thing.. and it tells me I don't exist again. I finally just gave up and created a brand new account, but once I was in game is was so laggy it was unplayable and that was that. They've released a newer client now with a lot of fixes but I just haven't had the heart to download about 1.6gigs.

Sonuva...
Ah well, if enough GWJ'ers get it, then I probably will too. Along with Quake Wars.

lunabean wrote:Eugh the game is in a horrible state, buggy as hell, numerous crashes to desktop, sounds not playing, incomprehensible lag for unknown reasons, glitches. I will be surprised, nay shocked, if this is ready for release late October. It is one of the roughest betas I have ever experienced.
That said, Titan gamemode seems interesting and the upgrade-tree and setting seem promising. Movement feels out however, maybe that's just the bugs though, and if anything the interface is too dense with capture points and so on, it seems "busier" somehow compared to BF2's interface.
Hope things improve but what with the state the game will probably be in for release it is looking worse than pre-patches BF2 in my opinion, and the advertising news doesn't help much either. God knows where the billboards are supposed to go in the beta map btw
Not impressed, I think I'll try and hold out for Quake Wars.
They were pretty harsh. Wasn't real sure of the Planetside references. Can anyone fill me in on that?
Ok, well that sums it up nicely. Good thing I didn't bother to pre-buy.

The setting, the kits (upgrade trees), the pace, the look of the characters. I only played Planetside in Beta and that was a while ago, obviously, but it seemed like a slightly more polished version of PS. BF2 is a shooter, but it's moments of inaction (running, driving, flying) combined with fierce firefights. 2142, with the faster transports available (air and ground), is more deathmatch. Spawn, rush, die, respawn, cap, die, respawn, rush, re-cap, die, etc...
It ran fairly smooth on my PC, which isn't state of the art, but I believe my settings were all medium. The initial map load and kit select were the only times it seemed excessively slow. I did experience server disconnects, but I never got a CTD.
I think I'm going to stick with BF2 and pass on this one.

NDA?? Wassat?
"Now witness the awesome lethality of the Alan Parsons Project!"

Umm... Seeing as I agreed to an NDA, I don't think I'll say too much. I enjoyed it, didn't experience any crashes or much lag. The thing that bothers me the most is it looks like you'll need to go up some 4 or 5 ranks to get a single class to the state it started out in BF2. You need at least 4 unlocks to get a single new weapon (three equipment unlocks, then the weapon itself). And for some reason, the very first sniper unlock is the claymore.
Anyway, there are a lot of really nice touches here and there that make the game rather immersive. The sound is particularly good. That hover tank sounds exactly like I'd think it would.

So any of you leet Beta-ers want to get together tonight?

Anybody with a beta key entirely uninterested now and willing to give it away?
I'd like to try it out but was at work for all the hours it was open

Hey ThinJ, I have a key that I probably won't get to use. You are welcome to it if you are still interested.

Just finished playing some. Meh. Maybe it's just that I'm not used to it yet. Everything in-game felt kinda... loose. Sloppy. A little too slippery and hard to control.
