Lenin, Hitler . . . Osama?

"Bin laden and his terrorist's allies have made their intentions as clear as Lenin and Hitler before them," the president said before the Military Officers Association of America and diplomatic representatives other countries that have suffered terrorist attacks. "The question is `Will we listen? Will we pay attention to what these evil men say?'"

Considering all three men said different things, it's hard to know what we're supposed to be paying attention to. Why not just toss Attila the Hun and Caligula into the pot?

As my friend from Samara put it the other day "Comparing a primative like Osama bin Laden to Hitler is an insult to the brave Russians who actually defeated the Nazis".

It reminds me of a Cheers episode where Cliff Claven is given the names of three people he doesn't know as the answer in the final round of the gameshow Jeopardy, and all he can come up with is, "Who are three people who have never been in my kitchen?"

Seems like you could build a case against Islamic terrorism and/or fundamentalism as a political doctrine without resorting to the old standby of "Look- the guy is worse than Hitler- you remember that guy, right? Band of Brothers- they fought against hitler- he was like the SS and stuff. Geshtapo."

I love how first Bush was all cowboy vigilante on Osama: "wanted dead or alive!"

Then he started saying things like "I don't really think about him all that much" when the hunt grew stale.

And now, just in time for election season, it's "Osama is the reincarnation of Hitler! Boo! Scared ya, didn't I?"

I think the president is grasping at anything to salvage his footings. However, though I don't believe this myself, a person could make a case that Osama is the Hitler of our times. Also, I think there are some Nostradamus followers that think Nostradamus called Hitler and anti-christ and feel that it applies to Osama.

Tough case to make, since Hitler could call on all the resources of a large, highly organized european state with the latest technology and a huge army. Whereas Osama lives in a cave someplace with a bunch of clever but lightly armed madras graduates.

Hitler killed six million jews and 20 million russians, along with a lot of other people. What's Osama done except take advantage of lax airport security and set off bombs in some bases, restaurants and office buildings around the world for a total death toll maybe 5,000. His minions number in the thousands, not the millions. He's a problem, but he's not Hitler level threat.

Is anyone else amused that Bush has now resorted to mentioning Hitler, which is the death knell of many an internet forum thread?

It gets better. Condi has been sent out with these gems:

Rice likens Iraq and Civil War critics

Rice then offered a parallel between critics of the administration's Iraq policies and "people who thought it was a mistake to fight the Civil War (in this country) to its end and to insist that the emancipation of slaves would hold."

"I'm sure that there were people who said, "why don't we get out of this now, take a peace with the South, but leave the South with slaves."

"Just because things are difficult, it does't mean that they are wrong or that you turn back," Rice told the magazine, which has a large audience among African-Americans.

Rice, a former academic, said she spent the summer reading biographies of the Founding Fathers and said she was certain "there were people who thought the Declaration of Independence was a mistake" as well.

Condi, what about thinking that making the movie Titanic was a bad idea? The fact that Titanic killed at the box office would seem to indicate that we have to stay the course in Iraq.

Also, didn't President Hayes pull federal troops out of the south in the 1877, leaving the racists inpower to screw with black people for another 90 or so years- seems like that would be an important part of the analogy.

The reason I bring up William Wallace is that the movie Braveheart is particularly popular in the Arab world. The Arab Street, apparently, sees it as an analog for their relationship with us. In a messianic way, they are looking for a Salah h'din or William Wallace to lead them to toss off what they view as "crusader chains".

That would be sweet. I can just picture Bush scrunching up his face like he does when he's explaining something to the common folk.

"See, the terrorists- they're kinda like that Vader guy- goin' round messin with people. The emporer- he says the rebels can't govern themselves- he says Jawas can't be free. I don't agree with that. Jawas, droids, Alderanians, even that freaky lookin' alien looks like a Chinese guy- what they want is freedom...."

I am very surprised they have not tried to toss one of their own under the bus yet. I can see Rummy resigning/being fired come late October if the polls are looking very sour. Just what GWB will need is 2 years of lame duckness.

The irony is that an oppositional Congress in his first term may very well have made him a far more effective and responsible president. Without effective oversight, he's managed to borrow enough rope to hang himself and the American reputation. Now he's trying to get Congress to approve the wholesale dismantling of the Constitution in the rewriting of rules regarding due process. If they go along with it, he'll be remembered as the president that made McCarthy look bush league.

Well in my eyes, Bush is soon going to be thrown in the same pot himself....
How many innocent Iraqies have died because of this man's ego, stupidity and failed policies?
10 000 - 100 000 - more?
Do reliable statistics exists on non combatant losses in Iraq at all by the way??

Though someone might actually care about the number of innocent Iraqis, I must admit it isn't very high on my moral or political calculations. I'm far more concerned with the impact the monumentally horrendous management of the presidential office has had on Americans. Despite the rhetoric about "this generation's nazis", no sane person in DC honestly decided to go to war in Iraq to make a better life for Iraqis. If they did, they should be tried for treason. The decision for Americans to go to war or not should be solely based on American interest. It is, after all, American money and American lives that will be spent on the enterprise.

That being said, the reasons for objecting to this war on purely mercenary grounds are legion. It is perhaps the single worst foreign policy decision any American president has ever made.
