BF2; Point of Existence 2 mod pre-released

To all BF2 addicts that are interested. It seems that the dev's released this early the other night on accident, and they said what the heck might as well release it to the public. The file is located here:

http://files.bf2s.com/details.php?file=448

This is not a final file, it is "pre-release", so in mod talk that is probably early beta. You need to use the password located at the top of the webpage in order to open the file.

PoE was a pretty good mod for BF:V, hopefully this one is just as good.

DL'ing it now, hopefully getting it working tonight.

Oh, and congrats to Jarhead on being the first GWJ BF2 officer! The executive washroom is outside of Certis's house behind the outhouse.

I'm a mod junky, and would be all over this like flys on poop. Alas, no games, but word from some fellow BF players is that it's not so super.

I'm waiting for Forgotten Hope 2.

It's not doom and gloom folks. In fact it is really quite good and fixes quite a few of my beefs with BF2. The AA weaponry is VICIOUS to the point where even mounted AA guns stand a good chance of racking up kills before a sniper gets a bead on you. There's individual kits available at spawn that allow you to customize. For instance you can pick up a stinger missle at the base and become an AA guy, or the 50cal anti-material rifle which isn't gutless like the one in BF2.

The sounds are quite good and there's a decent variety of maps. If someone is looking for a game fire me an XFIRE message any time, I'm usually around

I found loads of servers (maybe European only tho?) after I turned off my filter for ranked servers that I default to on BF2. Check your filter settings, if it isn't that then I don't know. Have to say the gameplay seemed faster and more frantic, which wasn't necessarily a good thing. Plus the sound seemed off, like the environmental effects were on the fritz and things kept cutting out oddly which I've never had a problem with in vanilla beef2. Textures on models also not so good from the few matches I played, but it was nice to have a change of scenery in some snowy Eastern European level. I'll play some more, the changes in gun types and class structures takes a little getting used to. Not bad at all for a free mod though!

That is the best part.. after a few weeks the rank junkies will be gone, and all that is left is people that care about teamwork and winning the map. The developers have said all they want is basic stats collected. Kills/deaths W/L ratio. But no ranks or medals.

It is a raw mod, I have been playing it with the TG'ers for a few nights. I love the "new" artillery system.. actual teamwork again to use it! It could use some work, and some of the suggestions at the official site (Flares, AT weapon effectiveness) are at least being addressed by the devs. But armor and choppers are lethal to infantry.. really have to use cover and be careful as most of the maps are open field.

Yeah, this game is fast. For my very first time playing, I jumped into a map that had just restarted and quickly reached first place. And held it. The whole game. So one good point, your typical BF2 skills will be put to use. Bad point, is this game different enough from BF2 to really give it staying power?

How do you do this? In true Goojer fashion, I have not read any documentation for the game.

Played a few hours on Friday and I agree with the rest, gameplay is fast. Frontline mode is infantry-only intensive and the kills and deaths come quick. An organized group will do extremely well.

Arty is the same as BF1942 in that some one needs to be in an SP artillery vehicle while someone else spots and calls it in.

Tanks have different rounds, Sabot (anti-armor) and HEAP (soft targets). Also there a few maps that have TONS of armor. Nothing like seeing four to six Leopards cresting a hill while you sit there with your RPG wondering where the hell you squad suddenly went to.

Pick-up Kits. Man portable SAMs are placed in certain buildings and can be picked up like a fallen soliders kit. There are also stronger AP and AT pick-ups located on certain maps as well as sniper rifles and an MG-3 support weapon. So far I've only found the Stingers. Rumor has it that there is a melee pick-up in the form of a katana - now that's a knife.

Commanding is kind of thankless as all the commander can do is drop supplies and zoom in on the map. No UAV, no scan, no arty.

Finally the mod comes with some 13 maps.

Download it now boys as we will have a PoE2 Thurs soon to really put its through its paces!

Great. Stryker with a super knife. That's something out of my nightmares.

In any case, I've got the download and will install it.

The maps are all pretty basic. There are one or two infantry types: "Fallen" and "Opel" are popular. Lots of cover and quick firefights. Most of the other maps are flat, large, and armor orientated. AT kits for most infantry on these maps, so get used to aiming them and know where to hit them. Tracks and rear work best; it takes 5 hits on the front to take a tank and 2 in the rear.

Spent some time with it last night - it's fun stuff, certainly worth the price of admission.

The differences between BF2 and POE center largely around the infantry... grunts are weaker (or maybe the small arms fire is more deadly), kits are slightly different (AT has mines!) and the dumbfire AA guns are a hell of a lot more useful for keeping aircraft of your back.

It'd be a lot of fun in an infantry only / infantry + jeeps only environment, but unfortunately, I haven't had the chance to test that theory out, as the maps I've played on were basically all armor.

EDIT: Just read the manual - you need the terrain texture set to at least medium, or you'll crash to desktop on at least one map.

I played some last night. It's similar to standard BF2, so I'm not sure why they did the mod. But that's also a good thing, because it's like getting BF2 with a whole new set of maps, new weapons, and some new variations (no UAV, less arty, more vehicle types, different map types). Good job by whoever did it.

I'd say infantry come out stronger in PoE. Some of the maps are sweeping and open, but others are nasty - many, many places to hide and shoot from. No laser warnings, so often a tank or APC will simply die as two AT guys hit it simultaneously. Choice of Sabot or HE on the tank main guns. Machine guns that actually suppress people - or kill them. AT rockets that are harder to shoot, and more realistic. Tank main gun rounds that don't drop 5 feet in 20. Shotguns that work at more than 10 feet (phear the engineer).

I like it. I also saw 3 ranked servers - not sure what that is about, but maybe they are becoming mainstream?

I don't like the sound of the armor focus. I'd rather have some infantry only mod, with only some basic verhicles and no tanks and such. The only thing I like is flying and infantry, the rest is not my thing, because I suck at it.

I don't watch, I interact!

There are some infantry only maps. I don't know how many, but the first map (out of three) I tried out last night was infantry only. There weren't even any vehicles. The second map was still infantry focused, but with a few light armor vehicles only. The third map was armor heavy, with a few helos. I didn't see any jets or airstrikes all night. Granted, the maps were long (like 450 tickets each round) so I only saw those three maps, but it was nice not being whored by jets and arty the whole night.

Overall, I'm impressed with what I saw and I look forward to Thursday night.

Good games last night, too. We rocked as a squad(s).

The 2 infantry maps I played were pretty intense, it really takes awhile to figure out where you are being attacked from. I only played one map with tanks and copters (whatever the one with all the snow is), it seemed to have some good choke points. Lots of bunny hopping unfortunately.

Bluenews is reporting the BF2 1.4 patch is coming out today; should we hold off on this if it does? Or will it not affect POE?

No. That, according to the PoE forums, is likely a mistake of someone running POE on a former BF2 ranked server. It has no effect other than costing the host more money for an official BF2 ranked server.

Good point. Lets see if 1.4 breaks it. If it does we'll just go back to the originally scheduled Armored Fury BF2 1.4!
