Psychoanalyzing SHODAN

Nice long article as it was before PCG edited it, presented by the author with PCG's permission. Wordcount Warning: Over 4,000 words but worth it. He tackles SHODAN from about six different angles.
Quote:
Not all clichéd femininity sexuality is submissive: The idea of woman as a cold distant and untouchable"… well, machine is where Shodan finds her peers. Hell - if she ever gets bored of almost (but not quite) killing hackers at the edge of space, she could find busy employment running an S&M-themed phone-line. Double Hell – actually look at the relationship between Shodan and yourself. While in reality you're in a consensual relationship where both needs the other, in terms of the actual second by second practice it's a straight Domme/Sub arrangement. She tells you what to do. You do it. She insults you. You're just lucky she doesn't make you lick her boots clean or something.
Quote:
"Do not presume to go in there, insect"…" Shodan spits "I will not abide disobedience". And you pause, standing on the threshold. Whatever will she do? Whatever can she do? If you go in, swearing under your breath at this tyrant, you find Delacroix dead and her final log describing Shodan's betrayal. It's cut-off as Shodan interrupts. "I hope you enjoyed your little rebellion, irritant," Shodan states, coldly calm "But remember, what Shodan gives, she is more than able to take away".
If this fuels a fire to reinstall and romp around the Von Braun, dull the ravages of time with better textures and models. And if for some reason you think you should do this at work, remember the midwives have boobies -- uh, one and a half boobies, at least.
While we're rummaging through nostalgia, take a look at Gamasutra's postmortem here. By this account I would have expected the game to suck donkey balls. Shows what I know.

Definitely a great article. Wasted a bunch of time reading and digesting it yesterday at work
Now I need to find the original system shock and try it...
Decisions are just decisions, there are neither "good" or "bad"

That's not just any author! That's Kieron Gillen! One of the few truly interesting games journalists out there in my opinion. Then again maybe I like him because he's all upons the System Shock/Deus Ex/Looking Glass Studios and their sort of gaming. I have much respect for the man. Really enjoyable article too, gave me another deep perspective on one of my favoured series. Shame EA might be cashing in with Shock 3. At least there's BioShock, hope that's good. New Q&A on BioShock with Levine on Gamespot today too.
