Test Drive Unlimited (360)

Just trying to find out if there's much interest around here in the upcoming Test Drive Unlimited.

I know I'm extremely excited for the game. The E3 demo was great and got me even more anxious. So far everything sounds great with the pseudo-MMO functionality, ability to create challenges on-the-fly, making offline challenges that people can pay to enter and compete in, ability to customize your car and your avatar, plus a wide-open environment to explore... it just looks like too much fun to me.

I'll probably be starting up a racing club with some folks on another message board I visit but maybe we can get some friendly competition going on here

EDIT: Oh yeah, forgot to mention that it'll only be $40. They will be selling additional car packs after release but that's cool with me. If the game is as good as I'm hoping it will be I'll gladly buy $20 in car packs to get back up to "normal" 360 game price.

I have an eye on this one for sure. Hopefully it'll work well with the various driving wheels out there.

I'm buying it on launch day, especially since it's only $40 (is that a good sign or a bad sign?) I liked the demo, a lot. The car physics are kinda blah, pure arcade and nothing as nuanced as PGR, and certainly not like GT or Forsa. Then again, driving on normal streets with NPC cars all over the place, you wouldn't get much chance to see that stuff anyway. However, I'm a huge fan of "adventure driving" and this is the coolest game of that type, evar. 1000 miles of real road? I'm there. GWJ car club!

My demo never really worked properly on the 360. I was able to get on the beta test for the PS2, but the PS2 has a dead modem. It looks good, the idea is good, and the price is good, so...

Put me down for launch day as well. I never tried the demo, but the premise has me pretty excited. Exotic locales and fast cars? Sounds like all it's missing are the hot women. Though some of the escort missions sound like they may have some of that as well.

For those that didn't like the demo, what soured it for you? Also, is the control more like the recent Need for Speed games than PGR, or even more arcade-like?

Did you see the cops? They've got "Queen of the S&M Prom" written all over them...

Test Drive games have always had a certain feel to them and the demo seemed to continue that style. It's not quite full-on sim but it isn't pure arcade either. The demo actually reminded me a lot of World Racing on the Xbox... if you had that game set to maybe 50% or 60% sim that's probably what TDU felt like. I'm guessing the controls will be tightened up a bit for the final version, too.

I felt the controls to be really stiff, especially at higher speeds. Sure is nice to drive around wherever you please though.

I just liked how there were other people in your area as you drove to missions. Plus it had a fun mini-game of trying to line up with oncoming players for a head on collision. Hope the physics gets fixed though as some of those collisions would send me flying backwards several hundred yards.

HAHA, I loved that, personally. I logged in one day during E3, and all the other player names were red and it was like Mad Max, total chaos. I could see the online mode being 100% ridiculous if they leave collisions on all the time, though.

Well, the concept itself is interesting to me. I love racing games these days.

Most of my problems were with the execution of the game's play mechanics. The inconsistency of the cops, the crazy physics that I only expect in games from the Burnout/Flatout/NeedforSpeed series', and a few other little things that really irritated me.

I'll listen up for impressions and check reviews for more details, but if I hear anything about cops sometimes pulling you over when you're doing 60 and four car lengths away.. then I'm still out

I'll probably pick this up early too, especially if it's cheap. I hope that Atari isn't stripping it down to skeleton content for that price though. The demo impressed me some, but let me down in other areas such as car sounds and physics. However, they have several months between the demo and release so hopefully they can improve things before then. I'm all for the GWJ car club.

This is a launch day buy for me. I havn't bought a racing game since Full Auto(and that's not really a true racing game). I'm gonna have to agree with everyone's complaints, but I still had fun with the demo. Does anyone know what kind of Lamborghini you get to download if you pre-order it?

Wow, there's another person out there who liked Full Auto?! Every time I mention enjoying that game I get a raised eyelash stare followed by "You know there's Burnout on the 360 right?" Full Auto always felt like a constant Road Rage mode with weapons. I seem to be the only one who thinks crash modes get boring after a while. Did anyone else think that there were a lot more of those and burning laps in Revenge?

The game comes with 90 cars. Pretty stingy, if you ask me. However, I was never one to collect a bajillion cars. I normally find one I like, then stick with that one.

Word from EvAv is it went gold, and from Boomtown that there will be a new demo out tomorrow with improved handling, new effects, new cars and some online stuff.

Rejoice, and be merry. At least those of us looking forward to this game.

Good to hear that TDU comes with so many cars out of the box. I wasn't aware of that and that makes me mroe confident that Atari isn't trying to micro-transaction us to death. I liked PGR3, but that game is the prime example of why micro-transactions can go a bad. The only cars that anyone seriously competes with online are the ones from the Speed Pack. They are better tuned and faster than anything that comes with the game and if you're playing a stock car against them, you are guaranteed to lose. So they arranged it so that you buy the game and then have to shell out extra money to have a chance at winning online. That was my concern with TDU and while it could still happen, at least you're getting a wide variety of cars to try out on day one.
