Is Lara Croft more popular then Mario?

So, in this story a guy from SCI, Ian Livingstone, talks about how Lara Croft is more popular then Mario. Because of her 2 hit movies? Last time I checked the second movie flopped. But that's beside the point.
Okay, what kind of crazy world does this guy live in that Croft is more popular then Mario? Everybody knows who Mario is. I'm sure if you check the sales charts Mario far outsells Croft. Even if you just look at the core titles, not all of the sports and side games.
In fact, I would venture to say that Mario may be the most recognizable video game character. Who would be more so then Mario?

You know I was wondering about Pac-Man. But, I think his popularity has waned quite a bit, but you can't deny that he was the original video game poster boy. I'm not sure... I think it would be close between Mario and Pac-Man. I personally would have to give the edge to Mario though.

Its gotta be mario... pac-man sucks! Eating ghosts is so 1979.....
Pac-Man 'sucking' has nothing to do with it, Arnold. We're talking about how recognisable the character is; not how fun its game is to play.

I was talking about that! Yeesh.

Seriously? To be honest I've never even played FFVII. My PS had broken by that point and I had moved on to the N64, for better or worse... I'm not sure which.

They're obviously not taking into account the Super Mario Bros. Super Show.

When I went to Play! two weeks ago, there were huge cheers for the Mario theme. People there that didn't come for the game music heralded it as 'the only theme we knew'.
'One Winged Angel' was also greeted by lots of screaming, but most of that came from cosplayers and people who hadn't bathed. To be fair, there were many of them there, so the noise was defeaning.
That said, there's no way he's more recognizable than Mario.

Lara Croft has only done the same type of game - tomb raiding, action-adventure stuff. Mario's branched out to golf, tennis, baseball, soccer, role-playing games, and soon, basketball. Not to mention all those Parties he's hosted. Mario's a jack-of-all-trades, whereas Lara's merely a one-trick pony. End of story.

Don't forget probably his most popular foray outside of platforming: kart racing.

Let's call an apple an apple.
We shall grapple with the ineffable, and see if we may not eff it after all.
I'm not sure that apples are the fruit of choice here.

Let me ask you all a question: how many people masturbate to pictures of Mario as opposed to pictures of Lara Croft?

Mario is the most popular video game mascot. He also has sold more games than any other mascot character.

Even John Madden?

Why not canteloupes? Those watermelons scare me. Maybe that's a 65 year-old Lara Croft?

They're too round for first gen Lara. Needs more pointy vertices. Pineapples, perhaps?

Because I couldn't find a good pair of canteloupes in google images.

Hey what about this guy:

HADOU -- er, SONIC BOOM!
Yet even then we ran like the wind,
whilst our laughter echoed under cerulean skies...
He's not exactly my type.
But seriously, I wouldn't even say Guile is the most popular character in the SF series. I would have to go with my main man Ryu.
