Well Done, Valve. Well Done Indeed.
Steam Beta 2.0 Admission Suspended : The Counter-Strike and Team Fortress communities have maxed out the Steam 2.0 beta servers, resulting in the temporarily suspension of admission to the beta as more content servers are put online. The current Steam content servers offer over 500 megabits of bandwidth, all of which the community is consuming right now.
Ok, I know this is the perennial whipping boy, but it appears that Valve's new Steam was not up to snuff. Either that, or they weren't prepared for the mass of people trying to access their content.
Now, I know it's not easy to serve a hundred thousand people and more over the internet. Heck, I even grant them that this was a beta, and I think they'd find me generous on that point this evening, but really this is just egg on Valve's face. Not so much because of a temporary setback, but because of how big a deal was made of Steam.
Well, I wouldn't wish my worst enemy employment at Valve tonight. Not with a quarter million rabid CS fans seething in fury. If they're very lucky they'll smooth this out quickly, and it will barely register as a hiccup.

Huh? I thought that was 3Drealms?
"Beer is proof that god loves us and wants us to be happy." - Benjamin Franklin
At this point I would say Valve is worse then 3DRealms. At least 3Drealms CLAIMS to be working on something. What exactly has Valve admitted to be working on? Team Fortress 2? Don''t make me laugh.
My days of not taking you seriously have certainly come to a middle.

I tend to agree though.

meh... so what if Valve are late with whatever they make. Half-Life was a year late, but look how good it turned out to be. The thing about Half-Life and the way Valve has nurtured the mod community is this: they make more money than they know what to do with so they can take as long as they like on any follow-up games to perfect them. Once the game is out, and so long as it''s good, no one cares how long it took to create. (Well, except for Daikatana. But that''s a different story.)
Having said that, George Broussard, hurry the hell up and release DNF already. Six years to make a game is just bloody ridiculous

I like that the peak in the last 48h, not in the middle of a serious sale or when a big popular game gets an update, is just under 1000 times more than they had then.

The DNF comment is the funniest part about the thread.

Yea, I'm surprised nobody made a sarcastic comment about Valve trying to sell us digital hats or something, like we'd EVER buy into that, silly.

I'm going to refer people to this thread the next time they start bitching about how lackluster of a service Origin is.
My Latest: I Accidentally the Whole Game Mechanic, Part 1 and Part 2 and Part 3
It's kinda like WoW's position now.. forcing all new MMOG's to be far more polished and content filled than WoW itself was when it launched.. Amazingly enough so many people seem to have no knowledge that WoW at launch had no "end game" raids.. half finished Talents (or completely missing) and item tables that were completely unfinished in some ways etc..
Aint nothing new about the world order..it's been playing since the day they put George Washington on a quarter
85's face the truth you're too dumb.
I don't think anyone ever claims steam wasn't crap at some point, but different comparisons make sense in different discussions. Origin now isn't competing with 8 year old steam.
I was talking more about the potential to grow and change.
My Latest: I Accidentally the Whole Game Mechanic, Part 1 and Part 2 and Part 3
On the other hand, WoW at launch was still better then it's competition.

Well.. as was Steam since its competition was.. well itself.

Huh. That's some serious thread necromancy.
(It did, however, remind me of the way the summer sale intermittently brought Steam's servers to their knees.)
And therefore people's expectations were met or exceeded. So if EA wants me to put my money into origin their services are going to have to be better then what I expect now. (That and they're going to have to reimburse me for that copy of Spore they won't let me play anymore because I installed it more then five times or something stupid.
But enough of a digression: Ha ha people's predictions 7 years ago were humorous.

I accidentally clicked the "last page" button, saw this, and thought the comments were amusing.
Plus it's a good reminder that yesterday's business boondoggle can be tomorrow's business juggernaut, so long as a company helps us to forget its errors along the way.

Ah, 2003: the days when if we got 8 comments to a thread it was a busy day. Also, the days when I predicted the future with exactly as much acumen and prescience as I do now, which is to say none at all.

I am just grateful that we don't have to put up with XFire anymore. Nothing said "cutting edge gaming" like having XFire crash just over 50% of all your games.
