Call of Juarez Demo (Damn Good)
I've been keeping a close eye on this Western FPS since I played it at E3. It's pretty sexy looking and the gameplay has all sorts of neat firing modes available for different weapons. I didn't realize you actually play from the viewpoint of two opposing characters who offer different kind of gameplay experiences. The second guy, with the whip, concerned me a little with the "stealth gameplay" part until I realized it was more real-world than you would see in a game like Thief or Splinter Cell. Essentially, shadows don't mean much anything compared to just straight-up staying out of sight. It's as if the NPC's can actually see more than ten feet in front of them. Amazing.
Hint: Rather than trying to sneak around too much, just run when the old bastard ain't lookin'

Is this the one from Techland? I thought those guys had a lot of promise back when Chrome came out. Nice to see that they were able to deliver on it.

Jeez that screen looks almost like its out of Oblivion. Is the gameplay open ended as well? Or more mission based?
From what I saw of the demo, I'm really not sure. You do jump on a horse and ride for a while so it suggests a possibility of an open game but as far as I know, it's all mission based.

I'm a sucker for Cowboy games and I have no idea why. Thanks for the tip!

Any chatter about a port to consoles for this one?
XBL/PSN: zeroKFE | BHA: zeroKFE
Yes, just yesterday in fact. It's coming to consoles and the PC in 2007 in North America. Apparently the PC version will be out in Europe before the end of the year.

Sweet. I love the cowboy setting as well, so it would be a shame to miss a good game that featured such an environment.

So how does the stealth game play compare to thief?

I did read that certis, but I was hoping for some more details.
Like what kind of interface is used? How smart is the AI in stealth detection, do they do a good job of keep themselves hidden as well?
thanks

Ooh, thanks for the heads up. I've been ogling the steady stream of screenshots on this one for a while, and I'm glad to hear it's shaping up well. I'll be checking it out tonight.

This does look cool. Let me add my thanks Certis for the heads-up. Any information on MP play? (Well I guess I can try and look around.

Why the heck are they releasing a demo in July of 2006 for a game that isn't coming out until 2007?

I think of that when I load up the Lost Planet demo on the 360. Every time.

Wow, I hadn't been following this game at all but I will be now. I haven't played a decent western shooter since Outlaws and this demo is suprisingly fun and polished for a game that is so far off. My only complaint is that the load times are very long, on my aging system anyway.

Very long on my 2 gig RAM system as well, I'm hoping they tighten that up before launch.

I think it's a thing with their engine. Both of the Chrome games had insanely long load times as well.

I like that the preacher can hold a bible in the right hand to spout proverbs while he shoots with the left, but not much else. Curse your stubborn hide for tempting me with the promise of stealth gameplay. It's no more sophisticated in that department than Beyond Good and Evil, or any other game that slaps on stealth because it's been the cool thing to do for the past three or four years.

Hah.. I was just coming here to post that I thought the game was pretty fun (short as hell demo though) but the load times we're insane. I mean.. literally, I fired up the first part ("Ray" I think) and headed upstairs, went to the bathroom, refilled my wine glass, chatted with the wife a bit, and came back downstairs and it was still loading. I seriously thought it had locked up or something. Other than that, the game's pretty solid. As mentioned above, it's nice being in the old west where I haven't been since Outlaws (who's CD I still keep around to play the sound track.. friggin awesome music. Lucas Arts.. enough Star Wars, okay? You used to make other games, remember?).
The firing two guns using left and right mouse button was interesting, but I didn't really feel like it made a difference in regular gameplay. It may as well have been a 12 shot revolver as it didn't seem to matter which one I used. Perhaps they should put two crosshairs on your screen slightly off center left and right so which gun you use actually matters. "Concentration" mode it does matter but it was kinda weird with the floating crosshairs you can't really control. That will take some practice and it's a bit weird with "bullet time" going on in a western. I also didn't care for the floaty crosshair in the "showdown" mode, but I only got to see it at the very end so it's hard to tell how it will be. Would have been cool to have a couple "showdowns" to get a feel for it... of course I guess I could play through it a few more times, which I'm sure I will before I uninstall. I really dug the ability of having 1 gun equipped and your bible in the other hand. I was gunning guys down and then reading passages from the bible.. so wrong, yet so right.
To sum up... load times, bad... game play, good... if they really have a year left in development then this is really nothing more then a tech demo and I can't wait to see what they do with it. Throw some more polish on this baby, make the story interesting.. especially since it's being told from both points of view, and you've got a winner.

Well, that was fun. The ranch infiltration thing was frustrating--why, after SC: Chaos Theory, would anyone create an insta-fail stealth sequence in a game?--but otherwise it was good times. MUCH higher production values all around than Techland's Chrome games, and they have really souped the Chrome engine up for this one. Some of the visuals are indeed Oblivion-esque, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that the voice acting was very solid. If you have ever played Chrome, you know why that is a surprise.
I think I'll be picking this one up. The Ubi store lists the release as Fall of '06, and Gamespot lists the release date as September 5, 2006. On the one hand, maybe that's a bad sign, as it doesn't leave much time for a final coat of polish, but on the other hand we'll get to play it sooner than 2007.

I'm in, but what does the "Juarez" refer to? The Mexican city, or the old mexican president from last century, or what?

The demo's intro says "Juarez" is a border town where a treasure of gold is thought to be hidden. The gold itself is some old Aztec treasure which is rumored to be cursed and anyone who tries to find it goes mad.. and the madness is called the "Call Of Juarez".

Is there horseback riding in the demo, and was it as good as the horseback riding in Gun? That game had awesome horseback riding that just "felt" right. Loved it.

There is horseback riding, but it's not that great. I've never played Gun, so I can't testify to the difference there.

There is horseback riding. It didn't quite feel right to me. I never played Gun.

I liked the story, voice acting and visuals. What I did not like were the screwy concentration/duel shooting mechanics. I didn't mind Gun's bullet-time mechanics so much, because they were simple and straightforward. These seem awkward and contrived. And nix the basic box-stacking puzzles. Stacking crates is so not wild west.

What are you talking about Fly? Don't you remember in the Dirty Dozen when they had to stack crates on a platform in order to cross a gap? That was an iconic movie moment!
