NeverWinter Nights or Planescape Torment
Monday, July 3rd, 2006 - 7:38am
I have this two games ready to go...
I have heard great things of both. I usually change genres from game to game so it can be a long time till I play the other one ![]()
I liked Diablo 2, Baldurs Gate also hooked me but not that fun. I like turn based strategy games a lot and I love paper Rpg, still nothing in Pc rpgs has reached that level.
Gothic 2 has been the last rpg that I liked a lot.
So which one should I play?

Planescape is a better RPG, hands down. However, Neverwinter has many qualities of its own.
Go for Planescape first. It's magnificent.

Planescape is clearly the better game, but one thing that's nice about NN is all the modules out there. If you liked pen and paper, you should be happy to hear that all the old 2nd edition modules have been ported over to NN.

Torment, definitely.
The Temple of Elemental Evil can also be picked up for about $10 on the cheap jewel case games shelf. While the storytelling isn't great and some bugs remain, it has by far the best turn-based combat engine of any D&D game.
Everything can be debated, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's debatable.

Torment will make NWN look like Diablo 2. The official campaign is awful.

I didn't like em both very much, and I will face the consequences of saying this. Maybe I should check out Torment some time again, but I disliked the setting and the huge amount of dialog alot. Anywayz, since you liked diablo2, but liked Baldur's Gate less, I would guess you are a bit more action orientated then story orientated RPG. I would suggest NWN then, that has enough action in it.

I might be in minority but I really enjoyed NWN, even the official campaign. However, I would say, Planescape is hands down a better game... best game. Personally, I find it to be the one of the best RPGs ever.
So if you don't mind plenty of reading"… it by far worth to play Planescape at least once.

Another vote for Torment here. The Planescape setting was always my favorite even though it was not all that popular. The setting is so freakin rich, they can do so much cool stuff.
The game itself is good too

Planescape is nearly the perfect example of how CRPGs should be. Neverwinter Nights is boring single player.
I agree with all the Torment fans. One of the best CRPGs ever. Do yourself a favor and don't read any spoilers or guides.
NWN is kind of cool, in the official campaign, I liked the act where you were outside, but I found the rest to be of middling quality. I also played a cool Pool of Radiance campaign for it. All this talk of modules kind of makes me want to re-install.

They are both good games, but I don't think Planescape is "The Perfect RPG". It takes a long time to get going, and there's A LOT of reading to be done. It can get a little tiring.
But if you can get past that, all the reading will reward you with an epic story.
Personally, I'd pick Planescape, but NWN is all right too. Can't lose with either of those.

you can pick up both for about 40 bucks canadian. I've got Planescape on my work PC (don't tell the boss man) and I'm having a great time playing through it. It's definitely dialogue-heavy, and whatever you do, don't play a warrior character. Unlike most RPGs this one rewards intelligence and wisdom far more than dexterity and strength.
You can't do this!

Planescape is a truly great game, but as some people have mentioned it is very dense and a little hard to get into. If you're ok with a lot of reading I would definitely recommend tracking down a copy. Planescape uses the same engine as Baldur's Gate so if you didn't find the BG gameplay itself all that compelling you may not enjoy some aspects of Planescape either.
As for Neverwinter, I thought the original campaign was boring, never got around to finishing it, but the expansions were definitely improved, especially Hordes of the Underdark which I quite enjoyed, so if you go with NWN make sure you get the Diamond edition or whichever one includes as much extra content as possible.
Since you seem to enjoy more action-based RPG games (Gothic and Diablo II) perhaps you could give Knights of the Old Republic a try, if you haven't already.

I'd second Planescape. And again, it's really a book in game clothing there's so much reading. But it's brilliant, and the setting is absolutely my favorite canned DnD setting.
I never got that in to NWN even with some of the addon content.

Both are fun games (what little I've played of NWN, that is), but I would go with Torment first.

Btw I tried Knights of the Old Republic before and I got bored quite fast. It really feels strange when everyone loves a game and I am like "forced" to playing it. Has this happened to you also?
Well, I can imagine that you get your hopes up if everyone is telling you to play some game. If everyone likes it so much, it must be one hell of a game. And you might think it's better then it actually is. I had the same with KOTOR, my friend was telling me to "play the damn game", so I installed and played a bit, but the crispy nature of the graphics, and the for me not so star wars feel really made me not connect to the game. I couldn't connect to any of the characters also, so I went on playing something else.

I have not played NNW, but Torment is great. I'll have to finish it sometime.
KOTOR is also great, but takes too long to get going. It doesn't really get interesting until after you get off the first planet, but that takes *forever* IMHO.

Torment, if you can get by the dated graphics, is one of the best CRPG experiences ever. Neverwinter Nights, while no where near the level of Torment, is decent as a single player game. The most fun I had with it, though, was playing through many of the user made mods with friends. For about a year we had a Friday night romp, and it was great fun.
Yet another voice in the crowd for Torment. NWN is okay, as most everyone has said, and I did enjoy the single-player campaign that came with it, but it never had that epic feeling that Torment had.
If you haven't already played them, and you like post-apocalyptic settings, see if you can find either of the Fallout games. Those are also a hell of a lot of fun.

Gaming peer pressure? Wow. This is not your high school, brother!
But seriously, you didn't like KOTOR? hand over your gamer license.

Ill stand up at a KOTOR hater. I had the Xbox version and on Tatooine there was a show-stopping crash that made it so that none of my save games worked anymore. After being so disappointed with NWN, my Bioware disliking deepened.

My theory is that the developers knew about this bug but could not figure out how to fix it, so they crafted the most boring gameplay, story, characters, and combat system in order to prevent players from ever reaching the bug.
But back to the main question. I'm not really into suggestion queueing games, but my coworkers would play NWN like a MMORPG on a custom server that was up 24/7. It played out kind of like a visual MUD which always seemed neat to me.
