Who knows Tampa, Florida?

In about a month's time I'll be moving to Tampa, FL to begin grad school, and I need to find an apartment. I'll probably be leasing site-unseen, with all the headaches that process entails, so I'm looking for people who are familiar with the Tampa area and can recommend the name of a reasonable complex. My priorities include safety, proximity to the USF campus, suitability for study (i.e., not a party complex), and price, roughly in that order.

Do you live, or have you lived, or have you friends who live (or have lived) in a Tampa apartment? If so, post here or send me a PM, and I shall sing your praises forevermore.

Note that I am equally interested in the names of complexes and/or areas of town that you think I should avoid, too.

Well, if you don't want to live in a party area, stay away from anything near Ybor City!

I live in St. Petersburg which is across the bridge so I can tell you a bit about it but not as far as living. One of the newer guys has tampa as location...Go_Aachmed

Good to have you down in our area. USF is a nice and up and coming college. Downtown Tampa has some nice museums, etc. Also, when you DO want to party Ybor City will give you all you can handle.

There are also a few towns across the bridge south (St. Pete, Clearwater, Largo, Tarpon Springs, Oldsmar) which would put you 30-45 mins away if that works as well.

If there is anything else I can help with or go look around, give me a yell, I am up in Tampa 2 days a week and can check it out.

I don't think I've ever said this sentence before, but man would I love to hump that butterfly.-- KrazyTaco

That one transvestite fight I saw while being awesome scared the sh*t out of all the girls I was with. I was the only person with a dark sense of humor.

My godparents are in Brandon and it's very nice area. There is a really good aikido dojo in Largo that you might want to check out. I'm usually around that area once every few months.

edit: Check out here. http://www.equestrianparc.com/ I've been there a few times and stayed there for about two weeks and they are nice apartments. They are a bit more north east in New Tampa. Another one is Highland Lake which also looked nice. I never stayed there but I was on property and looked around. http://www.milanoplace.com/ is another joint you could check out.

Awesome, thanks Edwin. That Equestrian Parc place is very close to USF, so I'll be sure to check into it. Highland Lake is also within fairly close range. So long as they have vacancies and the prices are right, you may well have just found me a new home.

Thanks to you too, Karmajay, for the offer to help. I'll let you know if I have any more specific questions about the Tampa area.

Same here, KT. I spent a lot of time in St. Pete Beach as a kid, visiting relatives who have since moved away. I like Tampa and the surroundings quite a lot. I can't express how eager I am to return to the land of fried grouper sandwiches.

I do a lot of work with Moffitt Cancer center, which is affiliated with USF. I'll ask some of them when I talk to them next. Might be a week though...

If you do check in with Equestrian tell them I (Edwin from ITG) sent you. Hopefully they remember me.

My wife got her Masters from USF a few years ago. She was still in school when we started dating. Right now we are living in Clearwater. You want something on Bearss Avenue headed into the "New Tampa" area. That is where all the new nice apartments are. You should be careful, because there are some real hell holes near campus. Avoid the College Hill area, it's not what it sounds like. I would definitely try and live near the school. Living in St. Pete or Clearwater sounds neat, but the drive is a B*TCH. You would be constantly competing with about 120,000 commuters.

I'll try and get some specific recommendations from some of my wife's friends who still live up there. Welcome back. We missed you!

PS

USF has become a fantastic university. And the football team plays it's games in Tampa Stadium. W00t!

Yeah I'm in Tampa, but not near the campus. Here, try this:

http://tampa.florida.city-guides.com/housing/137351/university_of_south_...

That will give you a list of apartments within 10 miles of the campus. I wish I could recommend one to you but I have never lived over there. I'm more south in the Riverview/Gibsonton area. Also I've only been here a couple years and still learning myself. I'm from the Orlando area which is only about 1 1/2 hours away. I hope that helps.

You want something near Bruce B Downs in the "Tampa Palms" area. It's all relatively new stuff and they are building up around it (shopping malls, restaurants, etc.) There is a nice mix of people and a lot of college students. Two complexes that I got by name were Camden Live Oaks, and the St. Croix Apartments. I have been to St. Croix and it's very nice, very new, and very chock full of hotties. Let me know how things work out.

Lobo, I find it hilarious you're moving to my old town, and now I've moved to New Orleans.

What's the price range? That's a big part of any further apartment choices. For really close, there are a few complexes literally across the street from campus, they've been building the place up recently. A lot of the more affordable places near campus have actually been bought up and converted to condos, or are in the process of being converted. Avalon is a place I've stayed, it's right across the street on Fletcher on the north side of campus. It's decent, there's private gated parking, a pool, and internet and utilities are included in the rent (but the internet was congested and was firewalled to the point of uselessness for gaming/networking). The management was horrible, depending on if it's the same people. I could ask a few people I know who still live there. It's also a college complex, so they pair you with roommates, which is a plus if you intend to have any. Do you intend to have a roommate? St. Croix is nice, but expensive. Campus Lodge is another Avalon-ish place, but avoid it. There's only one light on Livingston to get in or out of it, in the mornings it's so congested a 10 minute drive takes half an hour. Also, someone was shot and killed there right after I moved out. Bad history. On that note, avoid Fontana. You can't tell from the pictures, but it's nasty looking. It also has a minor history of suicide, and there was a heptatitis outbreak on one of the floors years back.

New Tampa is a very nice upscale suburb area. Lots of the areas closer to USF are more...ghetto. Like along Nebraska, which is called suitcase city and is where the homeless and hookers are. The parking on USF is god awful, and it's always been a problem. They sell as many tags as possible, and then it's first come, first serve. So I would consider living at a place in biking distance. The downside of biking would be that it rains...a lot. I know some of the people I work with here in NOLA complain about the rain, but Florida is different. During the rainy season it's constant, but off and on for 10-20 minute periods. Tampa IS the lightning capital of the world. I know they've also been expanding on the on-campus housing side. You interested in anything like that?

So, price range, roommates, and how far you're willing to commute and I'll ask around. Brandon, Riverview, and St. Pete/Clearwater are a bit of a drive, I wouldn't live there. Brandon is a 30 minute drive if you're lucky, but they've been building it up so the traffic is horrible now. Going from the mall, which is literally a stone's throw from the highway, to the actual highway, can take 20 minutes. Riverview is a bit more off the beaten path, but will take you around 30 minutes or more too. St. Pete and Clearwater would be insane unless you plan to attend a different USF campus.

Hey thanks, Scritch. And yes, it is funny that we have transposed hometowns. I imagine our paths are destined to cross at some point, most likely over beers.

Price range: somewhere around $600 monthly, with ~$700 being the extent of my range. I'm interested mainly in one-bedroom apartments, but I would gladly take a studio/economy apartment in a good complex over a one-bedroom in a poor complex. Likewise, I'd rather pay $675 to live in a place where I'm comfortable, than pay $575 for one where I'm not. Etc.

Roommates: no.

On-campus housing: I'm thinking no.

Commute: preferably under twenty minutes' drive--keeping in mind that I am quite willing to wake up (very) early in order to avoid the morning rush. I'd prefer to get to campus early and spend the extra time studying/preparing/reading, than to languish in traffic each day.

Hope that helps. Helps you to help me, that is. More than you already have, I mean, which is quite a lot, so thanks again.

Edit: And yes, I've never seen more sudden, violent squalls than in Tampa. It's thrilling, really. I love that feeling I get in my gut when I'm pretty sure the very atmosphere has conspired to kill me.

I did about a 185 mile round trip yesterday, going from client to client from South Dade all the way north to West Palm Beach and it was just nasty. One second it's sunny, the next it looks worse than Hurricane Andrew.

I made you a map.

The areas to the south and west of campus aren't very nice. Like most colleges I've been to, they seem to pick cheap, and therefore questionable, parts of town to build. The places I've circled are nice, but they're also walking distance for any vandal/criminal types. If you do get to Ybor, you probably won't be impressed. It's like a less dirty (less character!) Disney-fied version of the French Quarter, with all the clubs and bars. Gasparilla fest (a celebration for a pirate), is likewise a watered-down Mardi Gras-ish street party. There is a Gameworks there, which is fun but expensive. Decent shows roll through town, I saw Dropkick, Mitch Hedberg, and Flogging Molly there. A nice Muvico that serves beer is there too. If you're into D&D (I'm not, but hey, to each their own), let me know and I'll introduce you to my friend Matt. They game every Tuesday. There's a large LARP crowd on campus. Larping kind of weirds me out, but there's a reason Tampa is the city that SNL sketch about the Goth public access show is set in Tampa. Manson and the Spooky Kids got their start here. Definitely check out the Dali museum, or the Imax theater at MOSI (Museum of Science and Industry). Mosi is right across the street on Fowler, you'll see a big giant red Recyclosaurus (You wish I made that up) Rex on the lawn. If you keep going down Fletcher past where I've marked Lai Thai, there will be a bar on your left called "The Brass Mug". It's pretty much a, you know, bar. But more importantly, it acts as a landmark for a good tea shop (it has board games, whoohoo), and another used bookstore for textbooks. There's also a Wooden Nickel shop.

That's all I can think of right now. Good luck man.

Oh, and if you read comics, check out Green Shift. I went there for around 10 years, until I moved away. I miss it, never found a shop that was quite as good. The Sound Exchange is a good cd shop, even if I prefer their Brandon location.
