Superman Returns [Spoilers]
Wednesday, June 28th, 2006 - 1:52am
I just got back from seeing it. I am not going to go into any more detail, to avoid potential spoilers or expectation setting.
However, I have to say, I liked the movie quite a bit.

Could you give us a frame of reference? Like, what were your opinions on the X-Men and Spiderman movies?
I'm looking forward to seeing this, unfortunately it'll probably be on DVD due to money and time problems.

I won tickets from a local radio station yesterday to see it Friday, plus free popcorn and soda. I'm excited.

I was going to say we already had a superman movie review thread, but when I looked at it I realized it had turned silly. Does that still require a cough?
Coughing silliness is more of a discretionary action.
I think a new thread is fine in this case.
Letters to the Internet
Hmm. Other superhero movies. Okay, quick reviews for context:
Batman 1-2: Very good
Batman 3-4: Oh God, no
Superman 1-2: Very good
Superman 3-4: Oh God, please not Richard Pryor
Spiderman 1-2: Excellent
Hulk: Slow and artsy, which was pretty good, but not in the spirit of "Hulk smash!"
Fantastic Four and Daredevil: I thought both were decent movies ruined by bad directors
X-men: A good introduction
X-men 2: One of the best superhero movies ever, as good as Superman 1, and either Spider-man movie
Batman Begins: Redemption for DC comics. Might even erase the memory of Chris O'Donnell in a codpiece
I really feel like Singer got Superman right. I wa really worried when I saw some of the leaked scripts about the direction they planned to take Superman. All of my fears were unfounded. I thought they might want to go in a 'dark and edgy' direction. Batman is dark and edgy; Superman is about hope. And Singer nailed it.
I don't want to go into more, because I want to talk details, and that isn't fair yet.

I must know, is there a Giant Spider Fight? Or Polar Bears?

No, and no.
I didn't really care for it at all. It was slow, meandering, and too damn long.
There were some amusing bits sprinkled throughout, but I wouldn't go see it again, and I won't be picking up a DVD of it.

Kyrator: lvl 63 night elf rogue - Blackhand
Thadryn: lvl 70 draenei mage - Blackhand
Fine, I'll just go watch Wild Wild West then!

It was fantastic. We'd watched Superman 1 the other night, so seeing the contrast was pretty cool. This film is very much worth seeing. I'd say definitely better even than the first two Superman films, and perhaps better than X-Men. Different character type though. Superman is ... Superman.

Decided to make this one of the three or so movies I'll actually see in a theater this year (still haven't seen X-Men 3), and absolutely loved it. Superman was one of the first films I saw in the theater and Singer did a great job of remaining faithful and paying respect to what's come before and keeping his stamp on it as well. Awesome.

I like how they kept his strength to pre-crisis levels. You know which part I mean. Crazy.

As Ely said, it was one of the first movies I saw in the theater growing up that I remembered (ET and Empire are the other two). The guy they got to be supes sounds so like Christopher Reeves in parts I thought they were dubbing the voice. It really is an homage and starting point from those first two films. That said....
It's weird to watch a movie where you've grown to associate previous actors in the roles to the people that are playing those roles now. It may not be fair but it's hard to do regardless.
The age discrepancy... the new Lois looks as young as the actress that plays her (23), I'm not sure any national news correspondants have that much weight at 23 especially after having a kid at what would be 18.
Parker Posey was under-utilized, she's a great actress (all of the mains in this one are to be sure) and it would have been nice to see her able to flex. Kevin Spacey was more crazy than smart compared to Dabney Coleman or the guy from Smallville but he pulls it off.
Time/length, the movie is 2.5 hours long. I like the bang for the buck but we spend almost an hour getting Supes back to 'normal' saving the world. In the meantime he seems so distracted by his attraction to Lois that he doesn't even see the things she does in regards to what should be a priority to investigate and what isn't. It seems like they could make a 6 hour movie on the DVD if they wanted. I was more interested in knowing how he built the ship or why he had to.
We enjoyed it and didn't mind paying the standard movie fee. I've never read any of the Supes books.

I saw it and loved it. It's more art house than action flick. More homage to the source material than it is a summer blockbuster. And for that reason I think some people may come away disappointed. I loved it. I thought it was beautiful. And yes, as someone who is just barely old enough to remember the thrill of seeing it in the theater as a kid, I was captivated by the imagery and the craftsmanship.

I have a quick question relating to the earlier Superman movies. Back when they were created was Margot Kidder considered attractive? If so, why? And I mean was the general consenus that she was attractive not that you personally like bipolar individuals.

Yeah. If you don't think Margot Kidder was hot back then, your standards are way too high. As someone said, there was the boobies.
She wasn't too bad, but she isn't as hot as the chick that plays Lois on Smallville. Rowr.

Imho, the best Lois, hands down, was Teri Hatcher in 'Lois and Clark'. Strong, driven, and a looker with sensitivity (when you weren't between her and a story:>) And had some fair martial art skills(btw, don't much like her in Desperate Housewives, which I stop watching after the first few eps, and then only to see what she was up to. Different character, different take).
She looks way too much like my sister.

The wholesome Teri from L&C? Or the too dang skinny one on DH? Well I guess either way, your sister must be something.
L&C. I haven't seen DHW so I wouldnt know on that one.

I saw this last night. It was OK. About the same as Spider-Man, but not in the same ballpark, league, or even sport as the first two X-Men movies.
The early build-up of the movie was pretty great. The climax, however, was rather lame, unimaginitive, and just plain not interesting. Lex Luthor was too good of a character to waste with such a jerk-off "evil plot".
Reviews slammed Kate Bosworth as Lois. I don't really see what she did that was all that bad. The Lois character, however, was almost pointless. She's just there because a Superman story HAS to have Lois Lane. There wasn't much there that did anything significant.
It was fun, watching Superman zoom around and save people in theater-crushing surround sound. But that's all it was. Superman Returns shall kneel before Zod. And Singer's other superhero movies, for that matter.

To answer your question about Margot Kidder, since I'm the oldest one around I feel I'm qualified. Margot Kidder was "spunky cute" like Karen Allen from Raiders of the Lost Ark.
I have tickets to see the 3D Superman at Imax. I'll let you know what its like.
I'm bringing sexy back!
You're not the first to say so, though it's probably more to do with being particular. I think it's root is in being absorbed in Seinfeld during my formative years. For instance, the girl may be perfect but have man hands. Speaking of Lois Lanes, while viewing that Tad Hamilton movie with Kate Bosworth there is a very, very brief shot of her back in a mirror in the far right of the frame that is deep enough in the backgroun to not be totaly in focus. Beautiful girl, but the rest of the movie I couldn't stop thinking about her gross spine. I don't really know how to explain that.
I agree with you about Karen Allen, but I don't see it in Margot Kidder. I can't even find a middle ground where I could understand another's attraction to Margot despite me not personally being attracted. Maybe I'm too sober at the moment.
