Any Tivo users here?

Was just wondering if there are any other Tivo users here. I've had my series 1 for over three years. I finally got around to upgrading it and threw in a new hard drive this weekend, it was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I'm now revelling in 32 hours of high quality time-shifted boob tube goodness - up from 7!

Without TiVo, I would cancel my cable, burn my TV and probably blow up some local TV station.

I have ReplayTV, and like it a lot. However, I''ll drop it like an ugly baby once the HD DirecTivo comes out and has a couple price cuts.

Mmm... sweet additional hours... mmmm...

Did you buy one of the upgrade kits, LeapingGnome, or do it yourself? I''ve though about upgrading to the maximum hard drive space allowable for Series 1 TiVo''s, but it sounded complicated (Linux! Yikes!)

No kidding. Going home to my parent''s house over the holidays, it''s agony to sit through commercial... after commercial... after commercial... in addition to *waiting* for programs to come on to watch them! So twentieth century.

Everything can be debated, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's debatable.

Price cuts? The DirecTivo is only like $100, how much cheaper do you want it to be?

No, the HD DirecTivo. Huge difference.

I bought a series 1 Tivo from a friend with the lifetime activation attached a year or so ago. When the deal came around to upgrade to a series 2 and transfer the activation, I went for it.

I can''t imagine watching TV without it.

Tv without Tivo is like.. uh.. Tv without io.

I love my Tivo... Series 1. I''m jonesing to get an ethernet adapter for it... or maybe a series 2 unit.

Funny Tivo story (or WineGlass is a moron story, depending how you look at it): I bought a series 1 unit with a lifetime subscription off of a friend. So, I hook it up to my then crappy tv with only a coaxial input on it, and decide to hook my game consoles up to the Tivo using the RCA jacks on it so I don''t have to use my RF converters anymore.

I rented Enter the Matrix for the Gamecube and pop it in and start to play. Oddly enough, the controls suck hard, lagging behind by about 3 seconds. I''m wondering how anyone could design controls this horrible, and why no reviews ever mentioned it. It took me a while to realize that since I''d hooked the Cube up to the Tivo, it was slightly time shifting the game as I was playing it

Plan to be spontaneous... tomorrow

I never thought about that, but yeah, I can see why it would be a problem!

I''ve said it in here, but it bears repeating:

Tivo was the greatest gift I ever recieved, and that includes the gift of life.

I didn''t upgrade when they came out with that offer, and I''ve been beating myself up since then. I hope I''ll get another chance...

The thing with replay is the Comercial skip, it makes TV allmost pleasant to watch... the fact that this feature has been killed in future releases makes me want to cry. Trully if it where not for comercial skip I would probable be divorced because I would cancel cable in an instant but my wife likes TV a little to much.

Tivo has commercial skip too, just not out of the box. To change the Jump button to 30 second skip on your remote hit Select - Play - Select - 3 - 0 - Select. Viola!

Mmm that is not commercial skip, that is 30 second skip , we have that too, in fact a button set just for it. Commercial skip auto marks the commercial areas and when it''s enabled (by default it''s on) it will simple pop you past all the adds to when the show resumes. It''s not perfect and does make mistakes but over all it''s pretty dam accurate, and if it goofs it''s easy to fix. Both are great products though. I wish Tivo folks where not such media sell outs and I wish Sonic blue had been able to defend their features and continue to innovate for the consumer instead of getting sued into the ground but aw well, at least there is still some competition and either one is worth having.

Agreed griffon, I believe Replay is the better product -- but of course it''s the one I purchased Fanbois unite!

No word from D&M (Replay) about an HD version makes my eyes sad.

I still can''t believe they got sued for commercial skipping. I don''t see where it''s illegal. And before anyone responds with the obvious, no it''s not illegal to cause a company to lose money. It''s thier problem for depending on commercials that can now be skipped easily. If you can record a show and fast forward through commercials it''s the same thing for a machine you own to do it for you automatically. I think it was just a matter of getting buried in attack lawyers, not any actual legitimate legal case. That said, I hope the company that bought them has some kahones and keeps innovating like that.

Tivo is still a damn nice machine, simply for the DirectTV integration. Direct digital recordings have to be sweet.

I''ll just stick with my MythTV box though, simply because I like to play my own videos and music on it in various codecs and formats. I also like to record to something more compressed than MPEG2. I also don''t record much TV MythTV also has commercial skipping, though I don''t think it''s as good a quality as ReplayTV. It''s getting there though.

Tivo rules. So much so that I have two. A dual tuner Directv box for the big screen and a standalone for the bedroom.

I couldn''t agree with you more about the commercial skipping, Pyro. Technology makes things obsolete, that''s just the way it is. Unfortunately, the lawyer avalanche bullied a quasi-legal precedent into place. That is, other companies won''t touch the issue now even if they''re in the right. I doubt D&M will stand up to any futher lawsuits, and the second they drop the commercial advance feature from my Replay I will refuse to give them another penny.

Hard to resist the offer I found on GotApex this morning:

Overstock has refurbished models of the 60GB and 80GB models. Prices are $187.99 and $216.99 respectively.

Those, my friends, are two hella-cheap, large-capacity TiVos!

D&M already announced that future versions of the product will not have commercial skip, and might not have show sharing. *sigh* the whole thing is a dam shame really, as allways might has made right, the bigger pocket books won.
