Good Bye, Cali. Hello, Kansas?!
Just as most young boys don't dream of someday becoming a AAA middle reliever, my teenage years were hardly filled with daydreams of packing up my life and moving to the First of the Rectangle States. But it seems that's where my life is headed.
You might be thinking, "What the hell for?" Well, after being married for 3 years with both of us working full time and still seemingly unable to break into California's obnoxious housing market, we're moving on to more realistic opportunities.
Today is my last day at work. The house is mostly packed. Just taking a few days off to say goodbye to family and friends and play copious amounts of Drunk WoW(TM).
As of May 30th, I will no longer be just outside Jesusland. I will be deep within it. Gio's Clan is going to Wichita!
The question isn't "Who is going to let me?" It's "Who is going to stop me?"

Congratulations! California is a sh*thole!

WTF?! At next year's E3, you're not allowed in.
Damn. That will be a hell of a transition. Any friend/family in Wichita? How'd you end up picking a square Red state for your next home?

Interesting choice of destination. Carry on my wayward son.
Hey now! Just because you got funny looks for ordering a milk at a Starbucks...
Congrats to ya, Gio. I can't blame you for not wanting to deal with CA's real estate nightmare.

I spent a few years as a child in Overland Park. I hear the area's changed quite a bit.

Don't get caught with your pants down.

All this science I don't understand. It's just my job five days a week.

Kansas? WTF! Move to SW Washington instead! The median price of housing in my area just topped $100k last year. Of course, my area isn't exactly exploding with jobs, what with Weyerhauser closing down its mills. But there is a big-ass biodiesel plant moving in!
Ah, f*ck it, Kansas actually sounds pretty good.

You can't rock people's f*cking faces off, from Kansas. You stay right where you are.
And good luck, Gio!

Well, we all have opinions on where we live. Obviously, mine is a little colored more toward a SoCal preference, but, as I am sure you are aware, NoCal is ... tolerable what with all your eubonics and Bay Area traffic.
[=white][= 8]God Damn, NoCal, Battery Chucking, Water Hording, The Clear Taking, Bleeding Heart Liberal, My City is better than yours trash talking knuckleheads. I love you like herpies and I mean that in the best possible way. [/][/]

Yup, SoCal folk never talk trash about us northerners.

I suppose I should have just said "northern California isn't so bad" and left it at that. I've only driven through SoCal so I guess I can't really judge.

Nope. Why would we ever feel compelled to talk trash about our NoCal brethren?
Now, short of Pyro's obviously biased opinion (maybe he was propositioned or something while hanging out in Hollywood), we are way off topic on this thread.
Gio, why did you select Kanas?

It's where my wife is from originally. It's mainly so we'll have family around us, being new parents and all that.
Not to mention the obvious economic benefits. If the offers I've been getting hold up, I'll probably take about a 10% pay cut (if that) and net a 75% reduction is housing costs. The goal is home ownership, not making money in real estate.
Now, if I can just get past living in a state populated entirely by church ladies. Flame On!
The question isn't "Who is going to let me?" It's "Who is going to stop me?"
Both sides of the fictional North/South California border suck
If you could magically bring the cost of living to a REMOTELY SANE LEVEL then it might be tolerable

Re: the Southern CA real estate situation, my wife and I are in the same boat. All of my friends in the area who own property couldn't afford to buy it at the price it's valued at currently. They did a study not too long ago that only 20% of southern CA homeowners could "afford" to buy their home at the current price. Outside of San Francisco, this is probably the worst market for first-time buyers in the history of mankind.
Prices started going up by ridiculous amounts, so lenders started getting, um, "creative" with thier loans. This just allowed folks to pay even more for their homes, which drove prices up even further. The 850 sq foot 2 bedroom 1 bath home that we now rent was sold to the owner in 2000 for 120k. It is now valued at 480k, and several similar homes on the street have sold for much higher than that this year. We weren't ready to buy back then, and while it's not completely out of reach now, it's not the kind of property that I'd feel comfortable paying 1/2 a million bucks for. Quite a few folks on the street are leveling their homes and rebuilding McMansions that dwarf the majority of homes in the area, building multi-story structures that fill every square inch of the lot they stand on.
I just can't get past the feeling that if we were anywhere else in the US, we'd be in a *much* nicer/bigger/cheaper house, better neighborhood, with a ton of money left over.
On the good side, the market is starting to look awfully similar to the beginning of the 90's price tumble. All my home-owner friends are convinced it's going to be a soft landing, but I'm not so sure. To have such a dramatic adjustment over the last 5 years or so...it just seems like the economy can't maintain it at current levels.

Yeah the real estate situation is completely ridiculous. I would love to buy a house in this town but it's impossible. My parents sold their house last summer for $500k and bought a house with an acre in Tennessee for 80k.

The same situation is happening here in south florida so I feel your pain. Our house was bought in '92 after Hurricane Andrew for $52k (2 bed, 2 bath w/ pool and partial roof). The neighbors across the street diagonally are selling their house now for about $600k. Disgusting to say the least.
