Possible Xbox 360 Dashboard update
If true... awesome!
Xbox Dashboard Update confirmed, again
Posted in Xbox 360, Rumors by Messiah on May 12th, 2006 at 13:16Our German friends over at Xbox Archiv informed us about the rumored dashboard update. They got confirmation from Boris Schneider (Senior Product Manager Xbox Platform and Accessories, Microsoft Germany) that the dashboard update is coming at the end of May. Features include background downloading and having multiple downloads at once.
We got confirmation from Boris Schneider-Johne (Senior Product Manager Xbox Platform and Accessories, Microsoft Germany) that a huge Dashboard Update will arrive at the end of may! It will feature a download manager for 6 parallel downloads in the background. He also mentions that there will be a lot more features in there but it will be a surprise and he won't talk about
it! The downloads will also running while a game is played. The update will feature more then background downloading, so what will Microsoft brings to us? A totaly overhauled marketplace? We will see at the end of may.
Thanks to Erzengel360 from Xbox Archiv for reporting this news.

I hope they get the larger hard drives by then.

^^Seriously, mine is getting full up...at least make it easier to delete content rapidly...like delete multiple entries simultaneously, as opposed to selecting each item, going to delete, than scrolling up to yes to confirm.^^
Geesh, I just want downloads in the background while in the dashboard...if we can do it while playing a game, that would be sweet, although I'm pretty skeptical about this. The management of memory resources and bandwidth on this console are very tight. I forgot how much the dashboard uses up all the time (64MB?)...part of the reason I believe we haven't seen an update yet is because there are some technical limitations to resource allocation on the unit that MS can't escape.

OH yeah, considering they have a thousand+ items on XBLM, it's getting pretty messy on there, so a better GUI and organizational structure needs to be put in place.

I can't understand scrolling up and down, and not having the lists loop so it's a seamless scroll. Start A to Stop Z. Ok, start over from A. Same with music files.

MS really needs to re-work some of the UI on Xbox 360. Hopefully with Live Anywhere, things will change significantly for better!

Yeah it's a bit of a mess, they need to clean it up quite a bit. I'd like a bigger hard drive but it's not a big deal for me at this point. I don't see a point in keeping demos I don't like, and I usually purchase the ones I do like, so they are only on there temporarily.
But if MS decides to start offering the movies and TV shows, that's going to fill up very very quickly.
I hope the upradable HD will be reasonably priced, otherwise I'll find a way to live with the 20GB.

Im down to 3 gb. I gotta figure out how to get FFXI off the drive. I think I have to find the demo disc it came on. I hope I still have it or I may have to format

In Ultima Online I used to poison hams and leave them on the ground in cities for people to pick up and eat. I can't believe how many people thought street ham was a good thing to eat. -Elliottx
FFXI is an especially irritating case, at least the beta install is. It doesn't appear in the 'games' section of your Memory settings like everything else does. That game was just hours of trouble. Install for hours, spend an hour in game realizing I have no desire to learn to play it, half an hour trying to find the file to uninstall it, and who knows how long it will take to find the demo disc, and then actually uninstall the game.

I'm hoping for the ability to play video without a Media Center Edition PC, and in any format. Then I could finally put my old modded Xbox to rest.
And I'll go on hoping for this until the end of time, since it is never going to happen.

Has nobody (on the Internet at large I mean, not just GWJ'ers) tried opening the hard drive case to see if you can just slap an 80GB hard drive in? I haven't even looked at mine to see if it's screwed or a "snap-once" style case.
[Edit] Ok, it's a screw together case. Now I just wonder if it's as easy as putting a replacement drive in or if you have to lock the drive like the first Xbox. I don't see how though since the HDD is an accessory item. I don't have an SATA 2.5" HDD to give this a trial though.

I recall some one with that kind of project... and I think they were successful in some way. I mean from what I saw Xbox 360 drive is just a standard 20GB SATA 2.5" HD so how hard could it be!

Just found the XSATA that uses your PC as a hard drive, sounds neat.
Also, it does sounds like it's as easy as just putting a larger drive in. I've seen a couple of modded 360s that say they have 60GB drives. I wonder if you can just Ghost over the existing drive in a PC?

You can already play stuff from a Mac.
We shall grapple with the ineffable, and see if we may not eff it after all.
"What misconception traveled down the road and made you want to be here?"
Music and Pictures... yes, but I think Mac users would of like to stream movies as well.
Xbox Live: Nei HD | Playstation ID: Nei_GWJ
Video? I know you can access audio and still images, but I was under the impression that at this point video was exclusively restricted to Media Center edition PCs. Also, there is the matter of codec support...
XBL/PSN: zeroKFE | BHA: zeroKFE
Most of the people that added in 60GB HDDs actually only added them in via USB, concealing them inside the 360 case with some good wiring. Also, I believe the XSATA only allows you to access the content on your 360 harddrive, not really "use" your PC as one.

Yeah, but even being able to just easily jockey stuff on and off the 'box would be nice.

sorry, just music and photos for OS X users so far, using Connect360.

Which is nice little app!

I don't suppose there's any way for them to improve or customize way you play and access the music on your shared computer, is there? I really hate the way you find music on the 360. Your only choices are either find artist or find album (actually is there an album search, I can't remember atm.) Near impossible when you're talking about over 100gigs of mp3. If only there was a way to view it in folder view, same as Windows Explorer, where I've already categorized my album folders under Genre folders.
That's something I'd buy in the Live Arcade in a heartbeat. Of course I'm using XP Professional, maybe it's better if you're running the Media Center OS?
Well, with Connect360, you can browse your playlists, as well. That's a bit more convenient. But, their current technique of scrolling through every playlist/artist/album with no wrap-around scroll is pretty annoying.
XBox Live/X-fire: firesloth
I've also had no problem using the playlists that are on my computer to load up what I want to listen to. Granted, the setup for actually making a new playlist on the 360 itself sucks, and that playlist can't contain any files that aren't on the 360's hard drive, but I just skipped that and made a couple of specific playlists with winamp.
They work perfectly. I just put them in the same folder as all my music and they show up fine.
*edit for clarity*
I'm using the microsoft software, not the mac connect360 thing. Playlists still work fine. At least from winamp. I don't know about any other media players, though I would assume any playlists you saved in Windows Media Player would work fine too.

WMP playlists also work. This is the main solution for getting around a massive list of songs I think.
What bugs me more is that the system doesnt remember any of the settings you used before. EVERY time you have to hit shuffle, skip the first song and bring up the guide to increase the volume because it is always set at about 25%
I'd like to see a 1 touch music button. Select the playlist and it uses your last settings and turns on the full screen visualization.

Is there a way to access to Picture with Connect360 without having iPhoto installed on Mac? I don't want to spend $80 for iLife especially since I don't plan to use it.
Xbox Live: Nei HD | Playstation ID: Nei_GWJ
Doesn't iPhoto come free with the operating system? Or does it just come installed on new systems? Every Mac I've ever used seems to have it installed...
XBL/PSN: zeroKFE | BHA: zeroKFE
Originally I had OSx 10.2 and it did come with iPhoto... however, I upgraded my Laptop to OSx 10.4 and no iPhoto came with it.
Just to note, I blanked my drive before installing Tiger so what ever was installed or came with my system was erased. I figure, I never used it nor planing to use it... so it was not a big loss. However it seems like I can not stream my pictures using Connect360 with out it.
Sigh... I guess if there is no other way to get it to stream, I'll wait until I get a new MacBook Pro.
Xbox Live: Nei HD | Playstation ID: Nei_GWJ
iLife is included with new machines, not as part of the OS, as it is a stand-alone product (iPhoto, iDVD, iMovie, GarageBand and iWeb).
Connect360 wasn't reliable at all for me -- it simply would die when the Xbox 360 tried to connect to it to stream music. I'm not sure if was the size of my library or not. I know that there was a problem if music was stored in a different location than ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music, but even changing back to that didn't seem to solve the problem for me.
I haven't tried again recently, if only because I have a Media Center PC that I also run the abysmal Media Connect software on to serve music.
Twonky works with the Xbox 360 and doesn't involve integration with iLife (iTunes/iPhoto). My license expired recently so I haven't tried the most recent version, but the last version I tried seemed to work okay in my initial testing.
no particular interest, no particular talent
BTW, Twonky costs a modest amount for a license. For a UPNP server I actually prefer TVersity which is free. Unfortunately the TVersity guys have yet to get their product to work with the Xbox 360.
