XBL Arcade: Small Arms
Tuesday, May 9th, 2006 - 11:51pm
Anyone know anything about this Small Arms game? I've heard it dismissed as a Super Smash Bros. clone, but if it's anything like that I am SO sold. My pals and I played days worth of Smash in college.

I'm intrigued. However, much of what made SSB great was that Nintendo charm and context. The gameplay was fun, but without this little nostalgic touches I think it wouldn't have been nearly as fun...

I dunno. I never liked most of Nintendo's IPs (namely that half the characters in SSBM are furries or pokemon), but I still had a blast with it.

Powerstone 1 and 2 didn't have the charm/context of SSB, but they were still two of the most entertaining multiplayer games I've ever played. I look forward to seeing Small Arms - though I've also heard it might be a Contra clone - something I'd also be fine with.

Sure they did! Didn't you unlock the Megaman gun and Dragonslayer sword? Though given, at that time Berserk was not known in the US.

Dragonslayer Sword - yes. Megaman I don't recall unlocking, nor do I know what the Dragonslayer sword is (still). I do remember unlocking it though.

The dragonslayer sword was the gigantic double-edged black blade on a handle. You could unlock two arm-guns, one that fired tracing shots and the other that you could charge up and fire like Megaman's. A fully charged blast to a transformed opponent will knock them back to their normal form and scatter their power gems.

Hey guys,
First off, I work at Gastronaut so I'm more than a bit biased about the game.
Though we all love Nintendo, the game plays pretty differently than Smash Bros. since the fighting is (almost) all gun/ranged combat. The cast of characters is all original, and they are all looking really cool. You can see some nice hi-res versions of them if you refresh the game website. Each character starts with a different gun, and you can switch out during the match.
Of course since it's on XBLA you can just play the demo when it comes out and make your own decisions about the game.
I might be cynical... But I think this guy WORKS for Gastronaut!
Seriously, nice to have you, Don.

Wow, how's that for answers?
Quick, Don, go post something about Metallica or somesuch so we know you're not just here for the marketing!

See, GWJ is big time now. (cue Peter Gabriel song - "BIG TIME!!")
I'm looking forward to this game.
Oh, and as for SSB and Power Stone, I liked Power Stone a lot better. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed SSB too, but after 15-20 years with many of these characters, just sticking them all together in a game doesn't make for "charm" anymore. Playing with the more obscure characters helped my enjoyment a bit.
But Power Stone's 3D area fighting was very neat and is something that really hasn't been done enough.
In a roundabout way, it reminded me of my bar none favorite PSX game - Poy Poy.

Through the mystic arts of google-fu I found this footage from E3, looks like a lot of fun.
My days of not taking you seriously have certainly come to a middle.

Neat footage Sinatar. The gameplay looks an awful lot like "SSB with guns", a little more so than GastronautDon seems to imply.
But "SSB with guns" is far from a bad thing. And hey, no Mario is a plus for me at least.
I can't wait to give this game a shot. I've been dying for some more Live Arcade games! It was going so well, then the silly fish-eating game (gotta be for kids) and then Uno, well, it hasn't been that thrilling since Marble Blast.
I do need to finish Outpost Kaloki X though.

Looks fun. If it's at a typical XBLA price point, I'm all over it. XBLA needs more multiplayer stuff like this.

After seeing the footage, I cannot wait to get my hands on the demo and then subsequently purchase Small Arms. This is what I was hoping for from XBLA, original indie titles that aren't puzzle/card games and actually take advantage of the hardware. This looks like it might be the best looking arcade game yet, and if the gameplay is as entertaining as SSB or Powerstone with guns would be, then I'm sold.
Though I want more games like Small Arms to be made, I'm also still excited about Lumines coming to XBLA. Time to sell the PSP that doesn't get used anymore. If anyone watched the Lumines video that could be accessed from the same link Sinitar provided, you will witness the worst Lumines player ever.

Seconded. Retro re-releases are certainly fun, but the arcade games that I have enjoyed the most are the new(ish) games like Geometry Wars and Marble Blast.

Looks like this game is out *today*. I am very interested, just don't plan on buying it right now, I have too much to play as it is.
We shall grapple with the ineffable, and see if we may not eff it after all.

I've been looking forward to this for quite a while, I was always a big fan of Smash Brothers. I bought it this morning before work and played it for about a half an hour. I thought it was a lot of fun... should be a great time with friends. I didn't have a chance to try it online, I was just checking out some of the characters... If you like Smash Brothers I think you will definitely like this... it's kind of a simpler version. It has a lot of great unique characters... should be a lot of fun...

Just saw the same thing souldaddy, although I had forgotten all about this thread... this XBLA title seems very intriguing (sp?), but there just aren't enough hours in the day...

Well, I've got the Autodownload option turned on, so I'll check it out tonight and see if it's still worth the purchase.
Granted, it'll be yet another game I've bought but haven't had time to cram in the disc drive yet! (GH2, Viva Pinata, Marvel Ultimate Alliance *sighs*...) Of course, since it's not actually on a disc that needs to be loaded, the chances of it being played are moved up a notch.
