Coca Cola Blak

Finally spotted some of this in a local convenience shop. I think it's being test-marketed.

This is the intriguing coffee 'n' Coke beverage they've been talking about for a while. I thought they were still limiting sales to Europe, but it's here now.

It comes in an 8 ounce glass bottle that resembles the old wasp-waisted bottle, but with an inset middle section and a plastic screw-cap. Looks odd but familiar to anyone who remembers the days of the green bottle. The whole is covered with a plastic shrink that looks like a sort of latte of caramello design. The logo is a weird oval with a stylized wave in the middle (or so it looks to me.)

When you crack the cap, the smell is very strong, especially for a soda. (Yeah, it's soda to me, get over it. It smells very much like a highly flavored and very sweet coffee, with overtones of something like coconut, probably a mix of vanilla and and caramel and some other flavors. The cola can be smelled underneath it. It seems to be moderately carbonated.

The taste is, well, a strong cola flavor with a strong coffee flavor. That's immediately followed by a sort of flavored creamer aftertaste, and the mouth feel is that of a soda, not a coffee. If you just drink it, it tastes more like Coke; if you sip it and take your time, it's more like a strong caramel latte.

I can't tell the color since the bottle is opaque.

It's 45 calories in 8 ounces, with 12g sugars. It contains high fructose corn syrup and also two artificial sweeteners, acesulfate Potassium and aspartame. I'm guessing this is to reduce calories.

All in all, intriguing. Not something to chug. I'm guessing the caffeine content is quite high. Not sure why it's in 8 oz bottles - that's probably for marketing purposes, and to keep the calories low. Overall, it's somewhat more sweet and strongly flavored than regular Coke, in my opinion, but with the coffee and caramel flavors, it's more complicated. It definitely leaves the coffee taste on your palate.

I saw CC Blak at my local grocer the other day and was intrigued. I'm not the biggest fan of coffee so I'll probably steer clear. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm actually quite interested in trying this. I don't typically drink soda but, I drink lots and lots of coffee (Latte/coffee/flavored coffee, I love them all).

Bummer. Thanks for the review, Robear. I think I'll stick to getting my soda fix by drinking Virgil's root beer since it has cane sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup.

I was in Chicago visiting my sister last weekend and her roomate had a 4-pack if CC Blak in the fridge. I asked her what it was and she said it's like Coke mixed with coffee and gives you a heck of a caffeine buzz. Needless to say I did not try it. Give me a sugarless Diet CC Blak, and I might give it a go. No HFCS for me thank you.

I downed a 6'er of this stuff for work and gave the rest of the case away. I personally was revolted by the taste. Imagine flat coke in coffee liquer. The aftertastes in our test group ranged from "rootbeer barrel candy" to "cigarette butts". Needless to say, I don't think this will catch on.

I'm with Poly. The idea alone offends me. There are 4C per gram of sugar, so I don't see how they get 45C with 12g...

Yeah, I'm a big fan of Hansen's Naturals...the Green Tea with Tangerine soda is amazingly good. And sugar, not that weird sweeteners or corn syrup crap.

I tried so hard at Passover to find the kosher coke, but there was none to be found in Texas. I think it may just be a NY thing, in which case, next year, I'll have to have friends in NY buy it by the case and ship it here. It'll be like getting coors east of the mississippi back in the day. (Why anyone wanted to drink coors, is beyond me...but they did.)

I have to say, I've figured out the 8 oz bottle thing. It's FULL of caffeine. Luckily, I've only had one. I'll admit that it's not sitting perfectly, but I think that's mostly the caffeine.

Hansen's Orange-Mango soda is yummy! Unfortunately their sodas still have the high fructose corn syrup even though they are "natural."

I don't know, the name 'Blak' reminds me too much of 'Blech' (as in 'yuck'), so I think the nomenclature is a bit off.

Was there another soda called "Coca-Cola Black"? Seeing the English language blighted like that offends me. They should have just called it: "l337 COK3!11!1!1 OMG WTF LOL"

Well, I'll be golldamned. I read "fructose syrup" and didn't think "HFCS". I thought: C6H12O6. So, then I had to go google High Fructose Corn Syrup, and now...now I'm really pissed off at Hansen's. That's a deliberate attempt, in my opinion to mislead consumers.

Thanks for the heads up on that Lunabean, I appreciate it. I try very, very hard to keep corn syrup out of my diet, and I'm astounded that I didn't know about this bit of marketing trickery. Thanks so much for stopping the clue train for me. :)

I just thought it tasted awful. It sounds like a great combination, but cigarette butts is not a bad descriptor, except I would say they were doused in sugar first.

I've been seeing it around for a while. Smelled (Smelt?) it, but did not taste. No thank you. This is definitely going the way of "New Coke".

I've been trying to kee HFCS out of my diet as well, I'm not sure I knew there was a solid movement to avoid it. Go Go Goodjers.

Minute Maid lemonade is only 10% juice.

Oddly, the diet lemonade is something like %50 juice. It tastes much better.

No, saddly, Minute Maid is not healthy.

I just tried Coca Cola "Blak" (what a stupid name, I concur with Duttybrew on trendy stupid pseudo-missspelled naming conventions), and I think it has staying power. They just need bigger bottles.

Minute Maid orange juice is supposed to be 100% orange juice and nothing else. Otherwise they couldn't call it orange juice without getting their pants sued off. Unless things are different overoceans, that is.
