Star Control 2 could get a new (true) sequel
Wednesday, April 26th, 2006 - 8:26pm
There are a couple of news posts up at the Toys For Bob website (the guys behind Star Control 1 and 2, but not 3) stating that a new Star Control game from Toys For Bob is a possibility. Take a look here: http://www.toysforbob.com/database/tfb_news.html
They're asking for emails in support of this idea to use as ammunition when they pitch the concept for the sequel to Activision.
More information on the situation is available on a page at the Ur-Quan Masters (SC2 remake) site, here:
http://sc2.sourceforge.net/petition/background.php

This is good news, but I fear that even if the project gets properly started, due to the nature of the team, the game might suffer from a exceedingly long developement time. (which is what is happening to couple of X-Com games that are being developed right now).
Thanks for the heads up, I will definitely keep my eyes out for this one.

So, it is unclear from the website.. are they planning on making a true sequel to the game, or just modernizing SC2?
Either one I am in support of, I was just wondering what context to put in my letter.
Playing WoW as: Vilius (70 NE Druid)
“The only function of economic forecasting is to make astrology look respectable.” John K Galbraith
It appears that they are talking about a true sequel.
Email has been sent and the petition has been signed.
I would pay top dollar for anything that erases the travesty of Star Control 3.
I'm disappointed that there isn't more response to this here. I thought you guys were Old School.

Hrm, I have a hard time building up optimism after the catastrophe that was SC3.

Ditto.
I remember being so excited about it, and then seeing the actual game...

Skriss: lvl 70 undead mage - Bloodhoof
Kyrator: lvl 63 night elf rogue - Blackhand
Thadryn: lvl 70 draenei mage - Blackhand
Yeah, but keep in mind that Star Control 3 was driven by the publisher (who specialized in sports titles) and was done by an entirely different team than the guys that did one and two. They absolutely butchered it. If you read the posts on the Toys for Bob site, you can see that much of the humor that was in SC 2 (and the manual for SC 1) is still quite intact. You guys are seriously telling me that the prospect of having a "true" Star Control 3 made by the original creators, under a different publisher, that actually continues the story from 1 & 2 doesn't intrigue you?
Keep killing me.

Grrr, why does Star Control 2 sound so familiar to me? I just browsed through my PC games and I don't own it as far as I can tell yet it still sounds like something I put many hours into.
I'm going to lose sleep over this. I know it.

Edit: (stupid comment. I should've said, I didn't think you were paid to know old games)
Check the remake out here, Vrikk.

Just a case of "once bitten twice shy", that's all. I'm completely for it if they can pull it off. I just can't get my enthusiasm up right now.

I'd hit it.
Got any toast?
Toys for Bob has been one of my favorite developers ever since the olden days of Archon and Mail Order Monsters. I really liked the Unholy War game they did for the playstation, but it was a pale shadow of Star Control II.
Hopefully they'll get the money and publisher support they need for this one. Everyone email Activision!
I still have my copy of SC2, only I think the floppy disks are probably corrupt by now.
I actually bought a used 3DO with the express intent of being able to play the best version of Star Control 2... of course, a couple of years later, they came out with the redo. So it's not really necessary, but I still have the 3DO anyway.
It's still weird, after all these years, hearing the radio announcer guy doing the Earth commander's voice, because he was on a radio station I listened to sometimes. It just seems out of place.
The PC original was lower-res and didn't have the voices... the 3DO had the definitive version. It had a nasty slowdown problem in the end battle, though. The new remake is just like the 3DO flavor, but runs full speed for the whole thing. Good fun.
"Jerk! Moron! Stupid! Baby!" If they do a 'real' Star Control 3, it is REQUIRED to have the Pkunk.
Except the intro and ending sequences are from the PC instead of the the 3DO version. You have to actually own the 3DO cd, so you can extract the files. I wish my 3DO wasn't at a friend's house in Nashville...

Update from Toys for Bob:
Pretty underwhelming response, if you ask me. I guess most people feel like Quintin about the prospect of a TFB sequel. Granted that online petitions/letter writing campaigns almost never succeed, but if the creators of the franchise are only using it to represent fan interest with zero promotion, then what's the harm of signing a petition and shooting an email to the guy? Doesn't take long.
This reminds me of Firefly... tons of praise, but little real interest shown when it comes down to it. Are there really such a small number of us on this site that would like to see this happen?

1) Maybe he'd get better response if he provided the petition on his blog as a real hyperlink rather than just text in some kind of Flash abomination that doesn't seem to let me properly copy with ctrl-c.
2) The petition page doesn't seem to want to load for me.
3) Email sent, though my home network connection is down so there's no telling when it'll get to him. So I sent another from my Gmail account too.

I want another Star Control game. Why? Well, because the old games rocked my (now dead) computer's socks off. Actually, I think those games are what destroyed my computer. Damn, they must be some great software to do that. Although now that I think about it, an old machine like that didn't take much to screw up. Freaking Solitaire made it Blue Screen a few times.
Anyway, yes. Give me Star Control or I'll send my mother over to make you eat your vegetables. Trust me when I say you don't want to eat them. They make you healthy.
