Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends
Monday, April 24th, 2006 - 4:19pm
Over the weekend (I believe it was on bluesnews.com) I read of a link to an interview with Brian Reynolds, clicked on it here, and was shocked (shocked!) to discover that RoN:RoL is set to be in stores in about 2 weeks.
I verified this with gamestop.com.
One of the two games I promised myself to get upon release, I'm really looking forward to it.
"Eat Keel, Hellbug!"

Dont play the demo then =P
I am still really interested in this game but the demo was fubaredly difficult.
Being fangoriously devoured by a gelatinous monster.
Sadly the demo barely runs on a athlon 3200 w 1g ram & ati x800 so my hopes for this game have been squashed.

I'd wait for the reviews. If the demo includes a splash screen that explains how it has not been optimized yet and that the demo's experience is not fully comparable to the whole game, it's an evens bet that they were forced to rush it.
And if I haven't seen further, it's because those bloody giants blocked my sight.
It just went gold according to Voodoo Extreme. Estimated street date is May 9th.

2 weeks!? Holy cow, it is going to be May already!?
Back on topic, so the performance of the demo isn't so great huh? Maybe we need to get that new physics card or something... (yeah this game is listed as being PPU accelerated)

The beta is over, but I haven't heard about the NDA being lifted yet so all I can say is the demo code was old. Like really really ooollldd.

Interesting; I haven't played the demo, but remembered there were unfavorable comments made about it.
The system requirements seem to be too high for what I have at present (I was thinking it was just lifted off the original RON).
Guess it's "Guild Wars: Factions" for me....
"Eat Keel, Hellbug!"
Heads up guys, there is a new demo for RoL, this one is much more improved in term of performance! Looks like I will be getting this game after all.

Yeah, this second demo has really improved my impression of the game as well. The performance is much better, I had to settle for an unsteady framerate at 1280x800 in the first demo, but this one runs nice and smooth at 1680x1050.

Now we need those of us that has that Physics Processor card to chime in. I think the demo should also be "accerlated".

Thanks for the heads up lethial - it does run a lot better.

Glad to help somazx. Now I am eagerly waiting for some GWJers reviews to pop up

I've downloaded it from three sources, and it's always corrupt.
The VE3D article mentions a fix for it, but it doesn't work. It always finishes with "23 Blocks needed" and leaves me with a still corrupt demo installer. I have no idea what the hell that blocks crap means, so here I am. Still going without having played the RoL demo.

The first time I downloaded the demo from Gamespot I got a corrupted file too. Downloaded it again from Microsoft with no problem, so give that one a shot if you haven't already.

I've gotten the new demo from Fileshack without a problem.
I'm pretty underwhelmed. It's just.... more of the same, with a billion new units. And it doesn't feel that solid...the animations don't quite look right. And it's a bit sluggish on my Athlon 3200+ on a 6800GT at 1024x768, which is annoying.
Think this one looks like a pass. Unfortunately.
Does anyone have the final version yet? I am curious to how the final code holds up compared to the demo.

I'm really curious how this one will pan out. I always seem to get burned by RTS games. Either they are terrible or they just don't have enough meat to keep my attention. I suppose have the GWJ community now will change things a bit.

Song of the Week: ...on Facebook...
FWIW, the review from Yahoo! Games says that it still runs pretty poorly on mid-range computers.
Everything can be debated, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's debatable.

amd64 3200 and a 6800gt here....I have no issues with the game at all. Never even installed the second demo. very playable at 1152x864 (?) with most effects turned on. Im overclocked, but its nothing amazing...
Anyway I will definitely be picking this one up tommorow, I can write an impression or 2, but I probably wont even touch the campaign mode....just not what I'm into most times. Will most likely be trying to start off getting some coop games together vs AI if anyone is interested.

Oh gosh it is out tomorrow already!? I have Spellforce 2 coming my way, OB to keep me busy, demo for Titan quest tomorrow, and ROL is coming out tomorrow too... Not to mention the dreaded WoW expansion announcement tomorrow... I think I need to go find a rock and hide under for tomorrow or something...

I saw that too and was tempted as well.
Anyone have the retail version yet? I'd like some feedback on the campaign before I take the plunge. I had a good time with the second demo but I'm still a little hesitant given the strange universe. If they execute the campaign well I think I could get into it.

Spellforce 2 uses Starforce copy protection.

The demo uses starforce but the full version doesn't.

In any case, I already missed the anti-starforce boat. I've had it installed since Silent Hunter 3 with no problems.

I picked up the full RoL yesterday. Haven't had a chance to really get some good play time in, but it definitely seems... different. Early impressions:
I'd like to be able to zoom out more - Had the same problem with AoE 3
Performance isn't as smooth as I'd like - I'm running 1920x1200 and its playable but framerate can drop at times (system should be able to handle it). Had some small graphical glitches with shadows.
Seems to be less variety in number of units available and battles seem to be geared at being smaller in scale. Then again maybe I'm just not building enough.
Hero units and their special abilities seem to be capable to really turning the tide of battle
I've enjoyed it so far, its just going to take some getting used too. Hope its not another Total Annihilation: Kingdoms
WAR- Iron Rock - Cigaro/Engineer, Maersk/Witch Hunter
And with that one simple statement, you have potentially killed my interest in this game. I didn't know they were putting in hero units.
That very mechanic is why I hated Warcraft 3.
The important question... do said hero units still appear in multiplayer?
If not, then I'm still tentatively in, but if they're a big focus in multiplayer as well then I have no desire to play this game.

Hopefully you can disable them. RoN was quite robust with the configuration on how you wanted to play the game.
