Common Films Among GWJ

Abandon All Hope
Chiggie Von Richthofen's picture

The other day I saw a site of a guy that had put up a catalog of all the movies he owns. It's always interesting to me to see anyone's personal collection of anything but the movies are particularly interesting since I myself also have a movie collection. I proceeded to do what I usually do when presented with this type of collection and see what movies he had that I also had; the common denominators.

I don't know how many of you have a DVD collection that actually is a source of pride in your home but I imagine there are a few. So, I want to see which movies are the ones that everyone here owns. Like I think everyone probably owns movies like Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, Top Gun, Alien, or Gladiator. I'm just interested in what you all think the rest of you own. Not necessarily the best films of all time, just that ones that you'd be willing to bet were on everyone's shelf at home.

Nope on all counts (does that mean I must hand in my geek badge?) Although, I would like to eventually pick up Ghostbusters and the Back to the Future collection. Here's a smattering of mine:

    *Mirrormask
    *The Princess Bride
    *The Nightmare Before Christmas
    *Beetlejuice
*Lord of the Rings, all the extended editions
*Star Wars, Episodes 1 through 6 and The Clone Wars
*All the Pixar movies released up to now
    *Spirited Away
    *Clerks
    *Chasing Amy
    *The Matrix & The Animatrix
*Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail
*Evil Dead 1 & 2 Special Editions, Army of Darkness
    *Spiderman 1 & 2
    *Terminator 1 & 2
    *Ghosts of the Abyss
    *Firefly, complete series
    *Battlestar Galactica, Season 1
    *Bubba Ho-Tep
    *Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
    *Hero
    *Resevoir Dogs

...and that's just off the top of my head, I'll think of more later I'm sure.

I actually have a pretty fair size film library. Here are a few highlights that I think would be fairly common amongst our kind....

Batman Begins
Big Trouble in Little China
Firefly the Complete Series
Mr. & Mrs. Smith
Office Space
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
True Lies
Underworld
X-Men
X2 - X-Men United

Although I have not seen it myself, a fair number of people routinely talk about the Hudsucker Proxy.

Also, a personal recommendation I have in my collection that I think people would like is Ronin with Robert DeNiro and Jean Reno. Though I don't think it would be "common" by any means.

I try to understand the fascination with The Princess Bride, but I never can. I let it be, and sleep when it shows.

Back in college, I was looking at XML a little, and started making up an XML "database" of my movies. I have mostly kept it up to date, and fooled around with the XSL to display them in a reasonable way. The columns are clickable to sort, but the "More" button or the Link don't do anything.

My movie collection is probably close to topping 200. I also own True Lies and the Princess Bride, X-men, Office Space, and Firefly.

I'm guessing Firefly is going to be one of the common ones, and I almost said Beetlejuice before which I also own.

Alien and Gladiator are on my shelf.

Other common ones are:
Aliens
Terminator 2
Star Wars
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Monty Python & the Holy Grail

We shall grapple with the ineffable, and see if we may not eff it after all.

That's a fantastic idea. I already cataloged every game I ever played, might as well start with the movies.

Here are some ones I have that I'd think would be common among Goojers:
Alien Box Set
Lord of the Rings platinum box sets
The Matrix
Evil Dead 2 & Army of Darkness
X-Men 1 & 2
Firefly complete series
Serenity
Office Space
Robocop
Mad Max trilogy
Star Wars original trilogy
Futurama complete series
Equilibrium
Fight Club

Some other fine movies I own just off the top of my head that I think other Goojers should own:
Patton
The Prisoner complete series
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Fistful of Dollars
A Few Dollars More
The Outlaw Josey Wales
Dirty Harry
Unforgiven

Edit: Added more movies to both lists

Gladiator and Firefly are on my shelf of the common ones proposed. I suppose the first Matrix and the Lord of the Rings movies would be among the most common as well.

I have 433 DVD's currently (and just ordered another 9 the other day). My wife thinks I have a problem. The only problem I see is that I'm running out of cabinet space for them all.

Here's my current collection.

There's some older movies I'm lacking which I'm hoping will have Collector's or Special Editions released at some point. For some reason I find it hard to bring myself to buy a movie when all that's on the disc is the movie. Ya, I know.. weird.

(By the way.. the program I use to inventory my DVD's is pretty awesome. It's community driven and has a huge database of just about every movie ever made. All you do is type in the UPC code of each DVD and you download the profile for that DVD including scans of the front and back cover art, special features, technical features, cross-referenced cast and crew (you can select an actor or director and see of a list of all the other movies you own that person is in), and a ton of other crap.)

Wow, that is exactly what I was hoping I would some day get the XML to do. If it exports to a non-proprietary format, I'll have to check it out. In a perfect world, I would have a subset of the IMDB on my computer that matches my DVDs.

Chiggie Von Richthofen wrote:

The game catalog sounds excellent, too. How did you do it?

In the spirit of open source, anyone can feel free to copy the XML source I have there, rip out what you don't have and use it yourself. If anyone wants to get the XSL I put together for it, send me a message and I'll hook you up with that too.

Yep, and I've read of people doing exactly that in their forums. I occasionally visit their forums because some of those guys have 2000+ DVD's and it helps me put my teeny tiny collection in perspective (I also showed it to my wife to prove I could be worse).

Some of those I can say are my wife's movies (they're probably fairly obvious), but sadly.. that one I have to claim ownership. I never saw it in the theatres and didn't believe the reviews that it could be that bad and it was on sale for like $9.99 so I picked it up. That's part of my problem I think. There's lots of movies I would not normally spend the money on, but when I see them on sale for $5-10 I generally just go, ehhh what the hell.

I used to take great, great pride in my DVD collection. It was a very, very good day when I'd make a trip to Fry's or Barnes & Noble to pick up whatever new release Criterion offered. But since the dvent of Lil' Miss Duff two years ago, it's really taken a back seat....to video games. Which sort of disturbs me in a way.

I was a film major in college, so movies were my major interest. But as my free time and entertainment funds decreased, I found myself making choices. And it became harder to justify the $40 purchase for, say the Criterion double-disc edition of Ran, when I could spend the same $40 on Battlefield 2. The bottom line is that I knew I would probably get more enjoyment out of BF2.

At least once a month, I declare that I'm going to spend a weekend trying to re-kindle my love affair with movies and my DVD collection; that I'll spend all my free time on the weekend watching the classics that I've collected. But it just doesn't seem to happen.

We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea.

Wow, some of you guys seriously put my collection to shame. Luna can post a full list if she wants, but we have most of the standbys:

Lord of the Rings trilogy (extended editions, of course)
Matrix (only the first one)
Gladiator
Braveheart
Firefly
Crouching Tiger

and a few that are a bit more niche, such as:

Seven Samurai
Yojimbo
Waking Life
Arrested Development seasons 1 and 2

and a lot of other good (and bad) stuff.

There are actually lot of notable holes in the collection, though, since we often are satisfied with just renting movies unless we find a good deal or they are something very special.

Awesome! I used to love that show, it was on not long after Xcom 2 came out so I was digging how close it felt to the game (squad-based tactical combat). I wonder if its even half as good as I remember though.
