What I think of Starbucks
Wednesday, April 12th, 2006 - 4:30pm
I saw this the other day and it pretty much sums up all of my feelings for Starbucks coffee. http://www.ifilm.com/ifilmdetail/2706381?htv=12 Word of warning though. A TON of f-bombs in it so don't play it at work.

Ever listen to Lewis Black's skit on 2 Starbucks being on the same corner from each other?
We shall grapple with the ineffable, and see if we may not eff it after all.

DS: "Hi, I'd like a small dark roast coffee, no room for cream."
Barista: "You mean a tall coffee? We call then 'tall' around here."
DS: "No, I don't want a tall coffee, I want a small coffee, dark roast, no room for cream. Give me 12 ounces of coffee."
Barista: *Dies*
Bastard.
That said, I like their coffee beans.
I hate Starbucks coffee; it tastes like crap and they fill it up with mostly foam. If I'm going to spend $3 on an espresso drink it'd better have hardly any foam. How difficult is that to comprehend? Apparently pretty difficult since no one in this town can make a decent cup except for Peet's.

I've heard it. It makes me laugh. Alot.

funny. No one in Seattle likes their beans. The burning process they use puts way too much acid in it. I've heard the taste described as "rotten eggs" or "dog hair" by Seattlites.
If you're looking for a good cup of coffee, I'd recommend Battdorf Bronson, Torfezzione Italia, or Caravelli's depending on what makes you happy.

In some markets (I'm looking at you Huntington, W.Va.) Starbucks is pretty much the only game in town, meaning it probably is the best cup you can get. Luckily in H-town we have the Java Joint, which protects us from the bucks of star.

We have PJ's, Juri's Cafe', McDonald's, Dairy Queen, hmmm. Not a whole lot of competition for Starbucks. Down south is more of an iced tea market. Ask anyone down here, if you sell tea you better have your $#!+ together or face a beating. So, I end up going to Sonic more than Starbucks.

I despise Starbucks. I mean, I don't mind the business model, and they treat their employees well, and because they've had such a massive cultural influence, it means that I have a much easier time buying rainforest grown, organic, bird friendly, small co-op coffee beans at the market...so that part I like. But their coffee? Bleh! That's nasty. There is no cause for burning good beans like that. It's a crime against nature is what it is.
But, if forced to go without coffee or get Starbucks...I'll drink Starbucks...but I'd much rather find a different provider if possible.

I get my coffee from the Koreans downstairs. The coffee is good and reasonably priced -- which is a lot more than I can say for their overpriced sandwiches. Man, they gouge you. And no Kimcheeboy discount either! I had to deal with two years of crap from them for not dating a Korean girl and they still wouldn't give me discounts on sandwiches.

I like whatever I get from work. Not particularly good, but then again I have a tough time noticing the difference unless the coffee is atrocious.... besides, it's only a dime.

I worked at a Starbucks for a little over a month, went in and came out with no knowledge of coffee beans at all. I eventually got frazzled for being called slow by the coworkers and boss when the customers would regularly come back to the place to compliment my handiwork.
Most of the customers did not buy coffee. They usually got fraps or wanted some crazy concoction involving espresso shots. I can't speak for how important the beans are, but I do know that if you're timing is off with the espresso machine it will taste very very very bad. Like "I can't force myself to swallow this" bad.
The best stuff there was the frappaccino syrup.

I don't drink coffee. But my wife is from Seattle and her brother was part-owner of a coffee shop, so every once in a while I hear an earful about StarBucks.
Actually, I do like their mocha Frappucino.

I had an exchange like that once in an airport when I really needed to wake up for an early flight. I don't normally drink coffee (I like my caffeine in cola form) so I had never experienced the "tall = small" phenomenon before. Has Starbucks always done that or is it a recent development?

I find that most of the Starbucks employees I encounter find this whole tall/grande/venti language a little silly too. I say "Medium coffee black no room" and I, more often than not, get a grin and a nod of the head.

Seattle is the coffee center of the country - of course they'll have other options there.
I can't comment on Starbuck's lattes or anything of the sort since I always just get regular coffee. Most places in the country there aren't many other places to go. I do get some CC's though, whenever I can.
I hear that. I live in Owensboro, Kentucky (western part of the great Bluegrass state, 55,000 population) and the first Starbucks opened here just last week. I hate coffee so I can't comment, but the locals aren't too impressed. Maybe you big city folk don't mind paying $3.50 for coffee, but that cow don't moo around these parts.
Ironically, the local coffe house (Beyond the Brim) has actually seen business increase since SBUX arrived...I didn't see that one coming.

Okay, this will sound completely neaderthal, but the second best cup of coffee I ever had was in my office in Tokyo where the "OL's" ("office ladies") would make it fresh individually for the male management staff. You could tell they were deeply bitter about this medieval ritual and they probably spit in the cups in the kitchen, but they did a great job of it.

I only half-jokingly told my wife I'd divorce her if she bought Starbuck's coffee again. I was working at a coffee house in downtown San Antonio when the first Starbuck's opened. Within three years we were totally infested with them. Foul coffee and an even fouler business model.
Right now I'm saving the $2k I need to get a good at-home espresso setup and can't wait.

The best cup of coffee I ever had was the cups I made for myself before school everyday when I started college. I use to bring a thermos full of Folgers with brown sugar in it to my morning shift as a lab worker and sit and play Everquest. Good times.

That was actually another point of contention between myself and the management. It's one thing to take these moronic queues from the customer (who are just regurgitating what's on the menu) but I'm not ever going to say "venti" out loud when to the best of my knowledge I am not a chode.
Danjo Olivaw Lives
This is why you aren't great with the sniper rifle, you leave yourself open.
Anyway, I still feel like a chode whenever I use the terminology as a consumer, "Venti Coconut Frapaccino with whipped cream please."
"That'll be 5.54 and your balls."
"Both of them?"
"For a Venti, yes."
"Damn it."
Letters to the Internet
Not to be a cliche Canadian, but Tim Hortons coffee is really the only choice. My only problem with them is that they don't have any monstrously huge cups, to rival Starbucks' Venti. I usually end up getting a large and medium coffee, and it still costs me less than a Venti from Starbucks. Tastes worlds better, as well.
My friends and I have been know to hang at the local Starbucks, however, for the nice music they play, the comfy seats, and the pretty baristas who recognize us, when we come in. Starbucks has the atmosphere down, except when their more exaggerated customers ruin it, and that's worth my business, every now and again.

Well, most of us behind the counter think it's really freaking stupid anyway. Although once someone has deciphered that "Tall=Small", given that there are only three sizes to choose from, going up in price from Tall to Venti, if anyone asks me if a Venti, the most expensive, is a Medium, I should be allowed to brain them with a shovel.
Christ that stuff was disgusting man. I like Chocolate and all, but that's just drinking a Hershey bar.

A block away from my house I have a Second Cup (Canadian coffee franchise), a Starbucks across the street in the Safeway parking lot AND a Starbucks inside the Safeway itself. I still don't drink regular coffee, I don't want to need it to wake up in the morning, but god help me there are some tasty espresso drinks at both establishments. I stay the hell away from the Frappuccinos though, those things have enough empty calories to constitute a normal meal, with none of the benefits.

I used to work conventions and sometimes starbucks was the only place to gett food or something to drinkk. When you live in Vegas, anything that is cold when it's 120 degrees outside tastes "good". I dont really like starbucks coffee, but I like the green tea Frappucinos with whip. I have a friend who works at one, and she makes them with the mix and soymilk and light whip. I'm pretty sure they arent supposed to do that, but her manager is cool with it. It helps that she has DD's. The girl brings home 900 dollars a month in tips alone! (part time, college student)
