Your most memorable gaming moment
What is your most memorable gaming moment:
Mine undoubtedly has to be during Operation Flashpoint.
During the 4th or 5th mission, after playing the first missions exactly as i was told (thats the only way i expected it to work) i deviated on a whim. I was bored and thinking the game was kind of crap (holy clunky interface). I grabbed a jeep and drove off down some road.
I kept expecting to run into an invisible wall.
I kept expecting to run into something like the Great Wall of China
I kept expecting the Jeep to explode
I kept expecting a "Mission Failed" message followed by a restart.
I drove and drove and drove. All the while thinking "Holy sh*t, this is amazing." to myself. When i had been driving around for ten minutes realizing that i hadnt passed the same point twice and had driven through a couple of towns and that the sun was also gradually setting, my jaw finally worked its way down to the floor.
Now, i probably did screw the pooch on the mission. But who cares. To me this was revolutionary.
I was twice as blown away when i learned you could put anything you wanted on an island (scale!!!) via a really simple editor and write scripts to make any scenario you wished.
Needless to say my opinion of the game graduated from Crap to LEGENDARY in about 15 minutes.
That is the most memorable experience I have ever had gaming.
A note left at the scene simply read: "Pwn3d" - Hubbinsd

I would have to say the first Alone in the Dark game. The first time I had a zombie crash through a window, it scared the hell out of me.
"Anakin, as embodied by [Hayden] Christensen, is the kind of needlessly moody kid you might see getting punched out in a Dairy Queen parking lot."
"”Paul Tatara on SW:Episode II
I wouldn''t want to list a single, outstanding one, but there sure are several moments I remember,
Way back when I was still at school my class made this trip to some location (one week). I had brought my SNES along, 4 controllers and Bomberman 2 + International Super Star Soccer. The problem was that only one of the hotel rooms featured a TV set. And that happened to one the girls had booked. So we asked them if it was possible to ''install'' the SNES there. At that time they considered videogames as something incredibly stupid. However, after witnessing one match of Bomberman they got incredibly hooked and joined the session. And that room turned into the ''social center'' of that trip with usually quite number of people hanging around there. Some of then playing, some of them just watching and having fun.
The first minutes of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Simply because the atmosphere (rain, lightning, thunder, nice music) was amazing. Like the rest of the game.
The Monkey Island intro. I''ve been a PC gamer (286 16Mhz) for like 1.5-2 years before I shelled out money to purchase a soundcard (Soundblaster 2.0). The first game I tried out was Monkey Island, which I had already played with PC speaker-only. Man did that sound great now.
The moment of switching on a new console. There''s quite a tension if you finally get your hands on a system you''ve been looking forward to for quite a while. Doesn''t matter if it was the SNES, N64 or Playstation. It''s a small second where you take a deep breath right before one pushed the ''on'' button. Then the screen stays usually black for a millisecond. Already enough to get you worried that something might not work. Just to finally unveil the logo. Hard to describe.
Battlefield 1942 demo: it was already entertaining before. But then there simply happened to be that ''perfect moment'' where teamplay actually worked out. Our group was storming a base. I was infantry along with 2 or 3 other guys. Tanks rolling and firing to the left and right. And And while we were approaching there were also airplanes dropping bombs onto that base, basically paving our way. It was a true ""wow"" moment and I knew I had to buy this game.
Okay, that''s really enough for now.
When I first felt guilty for the moral choice I had done in the game.
In Planescape:Torment there is one quest about solving the murder in factory. It was designed so that you could complete it even pointing to person as guilty without enough evidence. I got tired and decided to point the man I *thought* was guilty (and didnt like him anyway) and get the hell out of there.
And then, after some additional 6 hours of play in completely different part of the world I got additional information which pointed that actually the guilty person was some other.
The fact that I felt guilty shocked me more than anything else.
(and hell, I play GTA3 without the smallest nugget of guilt)
When I played ""Doom2"" and entered some room. Shortly after doors closed shut, lots of monsters hissing teleported in and lights went off. And THEN the lights went off in the office and PC turned off as well. It appeared that the whole block had cut the power because of thuderstorm outside.
Man, I couldnt play for days.
I`m Artsy Partsy Gun For Hire
These are the ones I can remember off the top of my head.
From Thief: The Dark Project: In the third mission (Down in the Bonehoard) there is a part where you climb down a long ladder. Upon reaching the bottom I climbed off the ladder, only to be vaguely puzzled by the fact that I had sunk ever so slightly into the ground. Turns out there''s a pressure plate directly beneath the ladder that drops a huge boulder on your head when you step on it. Nearly gave me a heart attack.
Then there is a part in the first Cathedral mission where you have to find a hidden Keeper room. To get to the room you have to lockpick a door. I casually walked up to the door and started picking. There was soft grinding sound somewhere behind me. For some reason I felt obligated to look. The whole back wall was closing in on me! One of the best ""just-in-the-nick-of-time"" moments I''ve ever had in a game.
Last one: I got Half-life smack in the middle of university exams. I installed it and played the tram-ride intro bit. Realizing the grip that this game would have on me I uninstalled it. Needless to say I reinstalled later the same day.
Swing harder! Swing harder!

Well if I only had to pick one, it would have to be SHODAN revealing herself in System Shock 2. Totally awesome.
My days of not taking you seriously have certainly come to a middle.

That is the best Doom story I have ever heard, awesome.
I know what you mean about getting a new console, I didn''t play console games until Bungie switched over with the XBox. I had stayed up till 1 or 2 trying to get an XBox at WalMart, then went to Best Buy and got one. Getting the wrapper off that thing and firing up Halo was an awesome experience, not only because Halo delivered but because of the anticipation. I can still remember the smell, new console smell. Mmmm.
"Poor Eli Nooo... *child starts crying*"
"Come on now, there's no need to make that kind of noise. It sounds awful and you'll upset other people." - Ionae from Spirit Engine 2
I am looking forward to that smell again with the Xbox 2 or just maybe the PS3.
Xbox Live: Kooter06
Cue ""whacka-chicka"" soundtrack
ObGameMoment: I''m going to have to go with a Q3A moment... first time being the sole survivor and winning a clan match. I couldn''t play for a while, my hands were shaking so hard. I was never the ""go to guy"" in my clan, and I could almost sense the rest of the guys (who were, of course, already dead) groaning when they saw it was me left for the final, decisive game of the match... so it was pretty cool to finally do something right and not let them down.
That and finishing Xbox Halo on Legendary and seeing the ""special"" cutscene. I''m not one that finishes a whole lot of games, so I was proud at having stuck it out.
"THE HELL ASS BALLS." - Prederick, expressing frustration in the time-honored way.
Winning for the first time against Super Nashwan in Speedball 2 with only a few points (Bonus Stars rock). This was one of those ""f*ck yeah"" moments in gaming that made me jump out of my chair and dance around in the room. I was able to reproduce this earlier this year when I finally slammed the First Blitzers in Deathrow 21:20
.
Other ones came very close but none were so great like the one above:
- Sinatar already mentioned it: SHODAN revealing herself in Shock 2. Right before I entered that room I expected to be nearly the end of the game. Then when SHODAN revealed herself I was like ''No, this can''t be true'' and realized that his was just the beginnig, awesome.
- Playing the Haunted Cathedral for the first time, having Garrett sit in a corner in an empty house and me sitting whimmering in front of the monitor waiting for that freaky ghost to finally go away. Their voices were really scaring me, the first time I really got scared when playing a computer game.
-When one of my first multiplayer matches in Sacrifice lasted for over two hours with two other players still in the game. Everyone was casting spells like mad and it went back and forth. I do not even remember who won in the end, but this was such an intense multiplayer experience that I got hooked on this game''s multiplayer to this day even.
No hay banda!
Planetside beta
Me in my MAX, Gaald piloting the Galaxy, Certis, Sway in Harraser, Pyro (I think), and Elysium all cruising around in the Galaxy troop transport, ""TO THE MOON!""
Then about 5 minutes later hot dropping on an enemy tower.
I get goosebumps just about every time I hot drop on an infested base in PS but this one was special because it was the GWJ crew and the Strongbad reference.
Come to think of it, that night in Kurns tower where Frogh uttered those famous last words that inspired a Infinite Lives cartoon, was pretty special too! Teamspeak was a pure 2 hour comedy special. ""Guys! Im at 81%!!!! Heal me!""
Playing Cornelia in Q2 Rocket Arena at GDC to win a T-shirt. Every battle coming down to the last shot and every last shot killing me, grrrrr!
Being fangoriously devoured by a gelatinous monster.
Metal Gear Solid, the encounter with Pyscho Mantis made me think that video games had turned a corner again.
I haven''t been that flabbergasted in a long time.
End of line
The first time I logged onto the Everquest beta in the high elf city. Just standing there and thinking ""each and every person running in front of me is a real, living human being""
Little did I know EQ would eventually turn everyone into zombies.
Certis beat me to it. - Elysium
This is a tough one. I''d have to say beating RYGAR on the NES. It was the first game I ever really beat. I had to leave my NES on all night with the TV turned off, because if I remember, there wasn''t a save? I was young, there could have been a save, but being so green I missed it. Woke up on Sunday morning to finish it.
I was so used to Arcades. I would pump in $4 in quarters then walk away. Totally new experience for me.
Spot778, I also enjoyed facing Psycho Mantis in MGS. Good stuff.
For ""lan"" experiences I''d have to say NetTrek. Sway connected all the Macintoshes in our apartment and we played NetTrek for hours. FIX SOMETHING SCOTTY!!
2nd place would be Marathon after hours at my first job after school. I loved that game
For ""online"" experiences Myth 2. I had a Mac my whole life so this was the first game I could play my friends who lived in CA, and MD.
Watching a friend play Super Mario Bros. 3 just after it came out. Yes, just watching. It was still amazing, though.
In Fallout, finding the atomic bomb hidden underneath The Master''s vault and blowing him to kingdom come without firing a shot. Oh, except at the two mutant guards.
Playing Tribes with two of my friends. Me in light armor, they in heavy. Together, raining laser-sighted mortar down on the enemies'' heads.
Playing my first Everquest character, a half-elf ranger of Surefall Glade, and just standing next to the waterfall, fishing and talking to people. Finding Blackburrow for the first time. My first cross-Antonica trip.
Smaller, slower, dumber
Oddly, I remember this fondly as well. It took a good couple hours too. The best trip was as a 20 something bard. I ran to escort my newbie Barb friend from halas to freeport. ""There and back again"" indeed!
Being fangoriously devoured by a gelatinous monster.
Hmm, you''re making me feel old. One of my most memorable moments was in X-Com: UFO Defense. I had a team all clad in power armor. Half were psychics and the rest had those fusion missile things. I was attacking a downed alien battleship. Used my psychics to mind control aliens inside the ship, and used the aliens as spotters to find other aliens to mind control and also to set up firing paths for the fusion missiles. I wiped out every single enemy without ever setting foot in the ship and couldn''t help but think, ""wow, my guys kick ass."" 2nd most memorable would also be trying to cross Antonica in EQ. With my level 8 wizard. It didn''t go well, but it sure was memorable.
No game before or since has seemed so huge and limitless.
Graktar, Orc Hunter
Seeing the clock at 02:00 Monday, and wondering if I had been playing Civ since Friday...
The entire EQ beta felt like that to me. I was ecstatic. It took a long time for that buzz to wear off. By then, everyone else had become Verant''s slaves.
"Poor Eli Nooo... *child starts crying*"
"Come on now, there's no need to make that kind of noise. It sounds awful and you'll upset other people." - Ionae from Spirit Engine 2
I actually made the trip with two people. I was scared out of my mind, because I''d just gone hunting in West Karana the night before and gotten me and my group pounded into dust by Choon and Froon.
Anyway, luckily one of the two was a magician high enough to cast Invis. Unluckily, the second guy was a shadow knight and his invis wore off in Rivervale. We...left him there. Heheh.
Oh man, I just remembered - while running around, we stumbled across a level 22 HIE cleric decked out in bronze armor. We worshipped him. I should also add the feeling I got when I finally completed my first suit of banded and got my first combine long sword. Wisps were no match for me.
Smaller, slower, dumber
The T-Rex in Tomb Raider... the enormous darkened cavern with a huge eerily lighted sphynx to fall from... the first time I looked down on St. Francis''s Folly level. Why couldn''t any of the others have been even half as good as the original? /sigh
Actually, I thought two was better than the original TR.
Some of my biggest moments have to be...
Weigraf falling in Final Fantasy Tactics, not the first time you fight him, or even the second, but that final time where it''s one-on-one between Ramza and him... took me FOREVER to beat.
Aeris''s death still makes me cry really, heh, just one of those really emotional scenes. It''s stupid in a way, hehe... I thought FF8 was a deeper story with better characters, but nothing in it affects me like Aeris dying.
Ooh! Getting the best ending in Suikoden II, taking all that time to get all 108 of those guys (it really was a lot harder in the sequel, where as the first had almost everyone available at almost any time really) and seeing like the full castle, my awesome room, and then Jowy and I dueling to his revival, great stuff, really made me smile and feel good (definitely the best ending to the story and well worth the time!).
[On a side note, I just accomplished the impossible of getting ALL the classes I wanted for next semester at college, just plugged ''em in and they were all still available! Freaky!]
"Just remember that sometimes you need to allow problems to just roll like water off of a duckilama's back." ~Reaper
defintely Doom..
Downloading the shareware version from a local BBS.. and it taking long enough that it grew dark outside..
Not knowing what to expect I fired up the game with my room dark... the first time I heard the growling from the Pink Demons I jumped..
Forget the Cacodeamons..
I was floored...best single gaming experience..
Second would be the day me and 2 buddys all got Diablo..and played for about 11 hours straight in co-op over my LAN.
Aint nothing new about the world order..it's been playing since the day they put George Washington on a quarter

My first moment: Way back in Doom, when i realized my fingers even trembled and i was full of adrenaline only because of a game.
Then again, in Final Fantasy 7, when i realized how awful good the story was and how much details the devs put in that game. I could not let off that game for days and immediately started new after completing the plot. (was a hard time for my wife)
Anarchy Online (my first real MMORPG, like EQ was yours) i already had decided NOT to play it... then i logged in on the last day of my trial, and made a new char out of curiosity... and in exactly the same second i arrived in the newbie grounds a girl i knew from a forum arrived (she used the same name there)... we talked and decided to explore a bit and before the day was over we found many likeminded people... it was actually the first time i really played multiPLAYER and it felt great. Most of the people i met that day still play with me now, 1 and a half year later.
And Spunior, i had that same ""perfect moment"" in BF1942 demo where teamplay suddenly existed for a brief period and with the movement, the explosions and the sounds around me i felt so immersed, i knew i had to buy that game.
) running out with some comerades left and right of me, one of them felt by MG fire and me and the other crouched behind some obstacles at the beach. It felt like being in ""Saving Private Ryan"".
I had a similar moment later, while arriving in a full boat at omaha beach (almost the only time in BF i was not alone in a boat
Oh man my level 12 Wood Elf Ranger, Dahrolwynn, was lethal on those wisps with her combine longsword and kite shield. It cost a whopping 68 plat from the gypsies. The cutthroats and kodiaks learned to fear me too. Of course they feared my Ogre Shaman friend more with his ogre war maul.
Being fangoriously devoured by a gelatinous monster.
When I was in college, I played Quake3 Arena like mad. I remember one night I was absolutely whooping up on EVERYONE, regardless of who they were or how much experience they claimed they had. So they accused me of being a BOT. It took well over an hour to convince them I wasn''t one!
I have never been able to get back to that point on any other game.
That's one for me... and one for my homies.
I''d have to say 2 or 3 moments for me
In Half Life the first time I went into the blast pit level and was wondering ""What the hell is that banging noise?"" then actually seeing the blast pit beast and just being blown away by the size of it. One of the few times I''ve actually sweated bullets and felt fear in a game trying to tiptoe down the ladders and hoping like hell I wasn''t going to get chunked at the last moment I think it was the loudness of the banging as the heads tapped around as they looked for you, the urge to run when the tapping got closer was just scary.
Planetside: the first time I hopeed into a GAL with a squad of guys and did a tower drop on a heavily defended tower taking the defenders by surprise and routing them, just FRIKKIN AWESOME!
Most nights on RS with all you guys especially when Pyro was on his ""Must blow everything away with my Heavy SMG"" moods trhrowing stealth and tactics out the window and killing anything that moved (including teamates!) until he ran out of ammo!
These are the sort of moments that make good games great.
MUST...STOP ...PLAYING ....SWG! MUST GET REAL LIFE BACK AGAIN!
Sadly it is from EQ for me:
Running across the Plane of Fear charging at Cazic Thule. Man, that game is a waste of one''s time.
Xbox Live: Kooter06
For me it HAS to be this moment in BF1942 -- I had the game maybe 2 days and I thought it was cool, but I was withholding judgement. So, I hop in the back of a Stuka on Gazala and we fly off. A few minutes later two Spitfires coming swinging in behind us out of nowhere. They were clearly great pilots, as they were getting up so close that I could see their faces! I shot and shot and shot (hey, before they added the crosshairs for the tail gunners it wasn''t too easy!). Finally one planes burst into flame and fell from the sky. The second guy just kept bobbing along behind us... He was smoking pretty bad by the time he made the kill, but there were a good 2 minutes of totally white-knuckle action that I will not forget.
I had to call my wife into the room to try and explain how cool that was, but she just sort of smirked and nodded. Then I realized it was a game filled with amazing moments waiting to happen.
