Guild Wars GWJ Guild
Thursday, March 30th, 2006 - 11:08am
I've been thinking about leaving the GWJ Guild in Guild Wars. It's not so much a matter of inactivity of the members, but I get the distinct impression that the game REALLY starts when you get into a guild that has a guild hall so you can start competing. I'm thinking, maybe that's part of what's been turning me off to the game.
Any feedback? I don't want to abandon you guys... ![]()

As I understand it, competition is really where it's at. Now, I'm in a guild which goes rather heavily towards the GvG aspect (even though I haven't participated much lately due to lack of contiguous time
).
I'd happily invite all you guys over, but it's a Euro guild (with attached timezone diff etc.). My suggestion is that you disband the guild and merge with some other guild which has reasonably mature members and does GvG (TS etc.).
Other than that, I can always join you for PvE questing - that's what the International Zones are for

Hehe
Well, standing around and shouting works sometimes
Generally, I grouped with a few guys and tried to see who's dependable and seems mature. Luckily I kept one in the friends list.

I don't think you can actually move Guild Wars to another computer. The key is non-transferrable.

Well, I've personally arbitrated two (informal) ownership transfers. Of course there is the issue of trust... ya know

How's it work, Smials? I might be curious to know should I ever need to transfer my account to a new puter. I was under the impression you couldn't install a CD on more than one computer, like the system had a way of keeping track of the computer from which you've first logged on.

Well thats not true, I have my copy on 2 computers at my house, my kids play on the other computer when i stopped playing.

Oh. Neat.
Hey, anyone try to use this new skill unlocking aspect they threw in, where you can buy any skill you've unlocked from any trainer? Does that mean if you're re-making your Elementalist or something you can buy all the skills you've ever earned in PvE from the first skill trainer?

Sounds interesting, but generally to buy skills you'd need both gold and skill points, which you earn by level, which you generally earn doing quests, which earn you those same skills. Which makes buying them somewhat... pointless
Oh, maybe if you're high level and at the point where you can switch your secondary class around... maybe then it would be useful...
Regarding installation: I only installed from CD once. Use the downloadable client - I have installed and played the game on no less than 5 different computers. Remember, it's oriented for use on internet cafes, so the client installs fully from the net, and updates in the backgound.

I think maybe I've just been playing this game wrong. Someone ran my necro through to Yak's Whatever so I thought I was way too weak to play there and back near Ascalon I never got any XP or gold and nothing cool ever dropped. But it turns out that I can handle myself pretty well up there. I gained two levels last night. For the first 25 hours of gameplay, I found three purple items, all in chests. During the two hours I played last night, I found about 5 purple items (4 dropped, 1 in a chest), and unlocked 2 runes and 1 sword hilt.
I guess it pays to push yourself.
Anyone have any good combos for a necro/ranger? I shift around most of my skills looking for something effective but so far I generally only keep Mark of Pain (hex/curse, when target enemy takes physical damage all nearby enemies take 20 shadow damage) and my charm animal and animal healing/res spell. I have a bow that does 11-17 damage with +15% when my health is above 50%, +20% for being customized, and +25% against Charr (I might add a Vampiric Bowstring to it, too... should I?). So right now my biggest trouble is against strong solos. I'd like a skill that can help me attack faster. In generally I'll target a guy in the middle of a group and plink away for 7-12 damage or so while everyone around him gets torn to shreds by the Mark of Pain. It's kind of funny to attack a group and after a few seconds the only guy left is the only one I've been directly shooting at.

If you have an Area of Effect attack, try casting it on the same guy you have cast mark of pain on. My buddy (Kilgorin) was an elementalist and after I cast mark of pain on a target (I was a warrior/necro), he would firestorm the group. The group would take damage from firestorm and mark of pain. Easy way to clear alot of mobs.

Mark of Pain only works with physical damage. I was hoping there might be a spell that does recurring physical damage maybe, like a physical health degredation or something.

I'm pretty sure I must be playing the game wrong as well, Lobster. I hit level 12 and can't get anywhere without several hirelings or a friend, and I haven't seen a GWJer for some time. I've read that trying a mesmer first might have been a mistake, but I, too, am stuck near Ascalon getting zero XP.

When you are 10+, you CAN NOT finish areas by yourself. You have to have friends or a hireling group. The best player with the best gear will fail as well. The game is not meant for a one person group to blast through same lvl areas.
If you have problems, search with people doing the same quests as you.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know if you only buy the standalone expansion, will you be limited to a ritualist/assasin or assasin/ritualist character? Im glad that arena.net is on the side of providing new classes in expansions, but that does seem a bit limited. I know you cant visit lands in the other's continent if you only have the original game or the expansion.
Being fangoriously devoured by a gelatinous monster.
@fangblackbone: Yes, you'll be limited to those two.
@Jako, get yourself run to farther zones, but only so far as you start getting xp and solving your quests. And karmajay's right - gotta have those henchies on board once you're leaving Ascalon. Anyway, as a Mesmer, you're the physically weakest character, and must have others taking damage for you.

Yes, while you can do parts of Ascalon alone or with only 1-2 henchies, you will need a full group for ALL areas after that. Dont worry about XP, you will be 20 LONG before you finish the campaign.
From Jaks Bench on, you get 2 Warriors (Stefan and Thom) which may help you with Mark of Pain, because they are doing physical damage. Your pet does physical damage too.
And if you like doing the damage yourself, there are some different kind of bows with different attack and arrow-travel speed. Bow speeds go from 2 to 2,7 secs, a shortbow has a 2 sec. refire rate, while a longbow has 2,7 but a longer range. You have to look up the exact values at some info-sites, because there are a lot of different bows with different names.
And there are some skills to increase your attack speed and arrow speed.
"Read the wind" is a fairly low level skill which doubles travel speed of your arrows. Dual shot
can be bought in Ascalon and fires 2 arrows at once, so perhaps that could proc Mark two times.
The only ranger-skill to increase your attack speed is Tigers Fury, but that comes late in the game.
Buying skills at traders allows you to get some uncommon ones and you may buy some skills where
you missed the quest where you could have got them without cost. The money cost is cheap, but
each skill costs a skillponit and those are limited. But you still have a XP bar when maxed out at 20 and
you get a Skillpoint each time you "level" in this way which is fairly often.
I think Smials may have been misinformed. Arena.net has stated that the six classes from Prophecies (Warrior, Ranger, Necromancer, Elementalist, Mesmer, Monk) are the six "base" classes, and will be included in every iteration of the game. However, Factions does not include the Prophecies campaign, including all of its locations and some of its monsters, items, and (I think) skills. From what I understand, all versions will be compatible so if you only get Factions you would be at a disadvantage against someone that has Factions and Prophecies.
If you go to GuildWiki.org and look around you'll see some items marked as "Factions," some marked as "Prophecies," and some marked as "Core." It's my understanding that anything marked as Core is in Prophecies AND Factions, and will be in every future expansion.
It'd be ridiculous if they only let you play an Assassin/Ritualist or Ritualist/Assassin, particularly seeing as the classes don't appear to mesh well, other than in a few cases (there's a skill that lets an assassin teleport to a spirit, for instance).
By the way, for anyone that's pre-ordered Factions and received their pre-order bonus, enter your pre-order bonus CD key into your account and type /presale or /preorder while in-game. It'll generate a set of rather nice daggers and a staff on that character, customized to them. The daggers were the nicest weapon my Warrior had in pre-searing, even without the skills to use them to their full potential (at which they'd be damn fine well into post-searing). These two items are value-less and cannot be traded since they're automatically customized but you simply cannot "waste" them. You can have both items on each of your characters and if you throw them out all you need to do is type /presale or /preorder again to get them back. There's no reason NOT to put them on a character. They look cool, too.

Thanks for the advice Grim. I did pick up Dual Shot and have been using that with some pretty good results, though I still have trouble taking out a single enemy. I think I might get Bone Fiends with Death Nova eventually so I can summon me some nice walking bombs.
I put my Vampiric Bowstring on my Ascalon Bow last night and I wish I hadn't. I thought the -1 health regeneration would make me heal slower, not actually drain life. Good thing Ascalon Bows are easy to have made.

Lobster, thanks for the info, glad to be thusly misinformed
And thanks for the Wiki link!!!
I have several bowstrings in my storage, I think. Look me up when you're on, I'll fix you up with one.
And btw, maybe you should keep it around... make another bow and swap it in when you've got high health regen.

That Wiki link is great. It actually includes pictures of just about every weapon or armor from Prophecies and Factions and detailed notes on every skill, including suggestions for use.

They must have changed that recently. When myself and Kilgorin would do that combo, you can hear the sound of mark of pain activating as the firestorm was bearing down before I could even close in on the monster.

@Lobster: Dont remove that bowstring... just open another weapon slot with a bow without a special string, then switch to that slot when running around, and switch to your vampiric bow only when youre fighting.
I can't remove the bowstring anyway.
