Firefighter from Rat's hometown killed in SoCal fire...
From KPIX (The San Francisco CBS-affiliate)
My cousin's husband works in the department. According to my mother, who works with her sister is the mother-in-law of my cousin's husband (try to keep up), the crew were battling a blaze near a house in the San Diego area when the wind suddenly shifted. The captain ordered everyone into the house to ride it out, but apparently somebody didn't hear or follow the order and got caught in the firestorm. The captain went in after him and is now in critical condition; the man he went after was incinerated. According to my cousin, the deceased was a good man with two kids. Everyone from Novato down there volunteered to go. The department recalled everyone out of SoCal today. Needless to say, everybody in the department and their families are a little shaken up right now. Seeing how practically nothing like this happens in this town, this is going to shake the whole community.

This fire is a bastard...
I''m really sorry for that firefighter and all that have been injured in this thing...
I don''t really know what else to say... These firefighters are heroes...
Don''t try to sell that load of crap to the readers here. Firefighters are just doing their jobs - they aren''t heroes. And God forbid that a firefighter die in an accident, the crew in the P&C forum will let you know that he ""doesn''t deserve any attention""...
Or do you guys reserve that level of scorn for people defending your freedom, but not your ranch homes?
Reagan understood that the key to peace was never arms control. Security had nothing to do with the number of weapons, it had everything to do with the intention and power of those who possessed them. - Charles Krauthammer
I mean, sure Ral, your comments might have some merrit in the grand scheme of things, but that was a bit low. I live very close to the mountain fires and it''s a bit too close to home (especially in Rat''s case) to be making any cheap shots. Shame.
Please. So cheap shots are ok, as long as nobody here knows the wounded or deceased? Whatever. I feel as sorry for the loss of that firefighter as anyone who isn''t personally involved can, and will be the first to call the firefighters heroes. But I also fully expect to see hypocrisy and crocodile tears from people who like to take those ""cheap shots"", as you call them, whenever it involves a cause they want to throw childish put downs at.

I''m not sure what you''re driving at, Ral, or who you''re aiming it at. I don''t know about anyone else, but I hold firefighters in the same esteem I do those who voluntarily put themselves into harms way for other people regardless of vocation. I don''t think I''ve ever said firefighters, police officers, or, yes, even uniformed soldiers deserved anything but respect.

I think he''s upset because of that thread a while back talking about Jessica Lynch, and a lot of people felt that her whole ""heroic"" status was a bit overblown.
And yeah, I''m one of the folks who think that Jessica is no more of a hero than the rest of our men and women who put their lives on the line for our country (and I believe that irregardless of whether I agree with the merit of the orders they have to follow).
Let me reiterate and quote myself for those who might take that wrong (the added emphasis is mine, not the original statement''s):
Now, if you want to make it so that I''m saying that those people are not heroes, then get your reading comprehension checked.
Finally, I want to add that I admire those firefighters greatly as well; anyone who takes a job where they put their life in jeopardy to help others is a hero in my book.
That''s low ral, even for you.

It''s low to point out someone else''s low qualities? Interesting point of view. You heap scorn on heroes whose actions don''t fit your political agenda - why should we think you actually care about this guy?

Politicians are not heroes, no matter how much you delude yourself into thinking that.
Again, you''ve sunk to a whole new low. I hope, for your sake, that you''re just being your spiteful little self and actually hold firefighters in some regard. They can be quite...sensitive about such attacks.

Typically, you miss the point. As I stated, I believe firefighters are heroes. My post was intended to call out the ""they''re just doing their jobs"" crowd who don''t believe in heroes.
However, I find it funny that you call me low for attacking hypocrites. I guess you''re just covering yourself...

And again ral, you can''t make a point without taking a cheap shot. Your first post was out of line, unfair, and frankly childish.

Either the point of this thread was to garner attention and drive up your post count, or you actually care about this tragic situation. If it''s the second option (which frankly, I doubt) then God bless you for your compassion. Maybe now you''ll stop being ""out of line, unfair, and frankly childish"" when it comes to your discussions about serious goings-on in situations where you can''t name drop about family members...

It''s a two-way street pal. You brought this on yourself, this time.

Wow.
So back to the actual thread, how are things going for those of you affected by the fire?
Hey, I bring it on myself everytime. I stand by what I say (unlike some people
Rat, your idea of ""sunk to a whole new low"" just means that I''ve applied your own thinking and arguments to a case where you would prefer not to be reminded of them. Well, as someone here once said, ""it''s a two-way street pal.""

As an ex-EMT on the streets of one of the ""most dangerous cities in America"", working side-by-side with firefighters who would routinely get shot at, I can only say from personal experience that there''s a reason I quit refuting anything Ral said. And no, it wasn''t because he was right.
On that note, I''ll go ahead and start my morotorium on the P&C discussion board. I should have figured I should just read and stay away
And, I think many people, including yourself, are too quick to interpret criticism of an administration who is sending these people into hostile territory for questionable purpose as somehow being ''against the troops''. Maybe it would be better if you showed us particularly where ''some people'' didn''t express gratitude and respect for the actual men and women who are over there in front of the bullets?
"I think Elysium has the right of it" - Certis
To echo Elysium''s sentiments, you seem to be taking a pretty loose interpretation of our dislike of the Administration and then trying to weakly apply that somewhere else to point out a perceived hypocracy where none exists. Like he said, let''s see some examples of unexpressed gratitude for our fighting men and women.

Well, I can see how my comments successfully helped each side understand the other instead of this thread turning into a slingfest of below-the-belt insults...
That was sarcasm. Just thought I should explicitly state that to be safe.
Re: The fires in California, I found this a while ago and wanted to share it. Since this thread is pretty degenerated already...
