Since most of us are busy either working or playing Oblivion, it may be easy for us to miss the recent news. But this video of the new crysis engine is definitely nice looking:

Looks really neat in motion. Also, some info straight from the press pipeline:

Quote:
Crysis is a PC sci-fi first-person shooter from the award-winning developer Crytek, the developers of the critically acclaimed Far Cry (MC90).

Earth, 2019: A colossal asteroid crashes down to Earth.

The North Korean Government quickly seals off the island chain, claiming the mysteries of the asteroid for themselves. The United States responds by dispatching an elite team of Delta Force Operators to recon the situation and report back to the Pentagon. Amid rising tensions between the US and North Koreans, the asteroid suddenly bursts open, revealing a massive, 2km high alien ship. The ship generates an immense force sphere, freezing a vast portion of the island and drastically altering the global weather system. The invasion of Earth has begun.

The two rival nations unite to stop the aliens and save mankind. The newly formed alliance fights epic battles against the marauding Aliens. With hope rapidly fading, the player must lead a crack squad through lush tropical jungle, harsh frozen landscapes, and finally into the heart of the alien ship itself for the ultimate Zero G encounter with the aliens.

Crysis offers players a highly immersive FPS experience in which they will have to adapt their tactics, weaponry, armour and gameplay style to survive and defeat the alien invasion.

Crysis uses the leading-edge technology of Crytek's proprietary engine CryENGINETM 2.
# An immersive story that puts you the player in the pivotal role to repel an alien invasion and save mankind.
# A unique three-act structure that forces the player to use real-time armor and weapons customization to adapt to an ever changing dynamic world.

If the asteroid was 2km long wouldn't that trigger one of those global death events? I dislike when video games are unrealistic!

Looks very, very impressive. Crytek seems to be well-equipped to push the graphics tech envelope here.

Did I read somewhere that they were using the new dell quad SLI rig for that?

Looks brilliant.

here's a question, at what point do we reach a plateau in graphics because there simply aren't enough man-hours to model and places every single tree, bush and blade of grass?

they'll probably have to automize the mapping process to a great extent, eventually...

Procedural content is the key. Technologies like SpeedTree take advantage of that. And to a certain extent it could be incorporated into the level design as well by having groups of assets with randomized elements.

Well, if you look at Oblivion as an example, they made a basic logic for forest generation and the engine took care of a lot of the tree, rock and flora placement automatically. Obviously they would have had to tweak it quite a bit by hand, but some of the basic grunt work can be handled by the editor these days.

PS: "automize" isn't a word and you missed some capital letters there. *poke* *poke*

Heh, nah, I'm just imagining the amazing things that the technology shown in that video could do in a fantasy RPG environment. Of course, that's not to say that Oblivion is a slouch in terms of visuals, but CryTek has some amazing work on display there.

Actually, I doubt their requirements will be significantly higher than today's. Crytek make a rather serious part of their money by licensing their tech and IPs for console games (see the Far Cry Instincts titles), thus, it's only logical to assume that this engine was built with X360 and PS3 in mind. I'd assume that it'll take a new graphics card to make an Oblivion-grade PC ready for this.

Let's keep in mind, though, Crytek's work is notorious for being glitchy. I remember having a field day with Far Cry's demo, riddling the air with bullet hole decals or getting my PC to crash in new and exciting ways. I'd love to see a native dev's continued success, but I'm sceptical.

And if I haven't seen further, it's because those bloody giants blocked my sight.

Isn't Crysis Vista/DirectX10 only? So it'll require more than just a new graphic card.. But yeah, I can see this coming to next-gen consoles too.

Things like Oblivion's tree-gen tech and Spore's 'procedural' everything are going to become more and more popular.

The cool thing about procedural stuff (animation, textures, modeling) is that the visual is all code. If it doesnt look right, the artist/technowizard doesnt go push some pixels, he hunts down the code. For example the trees are a result of a set species, a few modifiers for age and climate and such, and the computer can generate multiple levels of detail so it looks good a mile away or 1 inch away.

As a result, the work of a small number of people can create a much bigger, much more diverse set of assets (the code for 1 tree can be adjusted to generate a fantastic looking, non-repetitive forest without forcing a team of artists to tediously craft 20 different oaks.)

Its the direction some games will go and its unfortunate for people like me because I can model anything, but drop a tree code in front of me and Ill scratch my head and go 'huh?'

They better have.

Don't worry, though, Polypusher: there will always, always be a place for modelers.

Yeah. You can't code art direction.

eh? That video is barely a tech demo at best.. Cryteam will have something playable at E3 according to that Video but playable at E3 and released by Jan. 07 are two different things.. I suspect this game is a Q2 07 title at best.

The one thing about Cryteam is that though their engine pushes the envelope in tech they still optimize it heavily. At the time FarCry was cutting edge but still ran very well.. others devs should take note.

Looks nice. I think I could do without the voice over saying "Maximum strength, or Maximum speed." though. Or at least change the voice so it doesn't sound like the guy from Mortal Kombat, "Finish him!"

But, I do love, LOVE the fact that you can take out tires on vehicles and such without blowing the whole friggin' thing up.
