Any George RR Martin Fans?

I picked up the first P&P RPG I've bought in, oh, damn, like 15 years the other day, because someone made one based in the Song of Fire and Ice universe... it's a D20 based system, which means almost nothing to me, since D20 is waaaaaaaaaaaay after my time in D&D.... hell, I stopped before 3rd Edition.
anyway, it's kinda cool just for background info, I don't think there's anyway I could get enough people to commit to playing it.

Not a real fan of the majority of his work. But I have to say his short story, Sandkings, is a classic.
I can't say I'd be interested in the RPG, but I've been a fan of Martin's work since the Beauty and the Beast days. I think there's also a pretty sizeable core of Ice and Fire disciples here.

No, we universally loathe him. However, I'm almost certain everyone here loves Robert Jordan and Terry Goodkind. And Jesus.

I'm not intending to play it, but I've got an obsessive compulsive thing for collecting maps and such from fantasy universes.... unfortunately, even though the book clocks in at over 450 pages, it's woefully short on maps.
Westeros would make a pretty compelling RP type of MMORPG.

I'm in near the end of Clash of Kings and I'm loving it! I tried the trading card game for Game of Thrones, which was decent, but Magic is waay more than enough to occupy my trading card needs. I'm not a big RPG'er if it's not on a computer or console...

Yeah I'd like to see a compendium of maps at some point. I love the books, but it does get a little annoying not being able to pinpoint exactly where things are happening relative to other things.

there's a few maps of the eastern lands online, but they're all really, really bad fan art... I picked up the 'art of GRRM' book when I got the other book, and it's mainly artwork that was made for the CCG, but there's one semi decent map of Kings Landing, that at least gives the general lay out of the place, but it's tiny.

I always felt that Martin did a very good job of setting the 'perceived' distances by having messages from elsewhere travel to the region in question over the course of a few chapters. The less up to date your character is on someone else, the further away he is. 'Real' distance did in so far not bother me, but now that I think about it, I have to admit that I'd love to put a real nice vellum map of Westeros up here somewhere...
And if I haven't seen further, it's because those bloody giants blocked my sight.
i'm a big fan of GRRM, i find his maps pretty good actually (apart maybe from the daenarys related ones). much better than the maps from Steven Erikson's (THE master as far as i'm concerned) malazan book of the fallen series which are minimalist to say the least.
I haven't read Erickson, he's good you say?
I was late getting into the GRRM books, I didn't even know they existed until last year, when they popped up on this pirated russian book site I visit.

Another author who is not afraid to kill people. Or maim them. Or introduce thousands of characters, mention them once, and then ignore them for 50 chapters.
He jumps around a lot, and he's also very wordy. But the 2 books I've read so far have gotten reaaaally good towards the end (Gardens of the Moon, Deadhouse Gates).

I like wordy.... probably the best new Fantasy write I've picked up in the last couple years is China Mielville, his Perddido Street Station is amazingly good dark (pitch black) steam-punk fantasy... the guy makes up words constantly, but he's so good at it, making them sound so etymologicly feasible within the context, that you can read right over them, get a few sentences ahead before you realize, 'Hey, I don't think that was a real word'.

Wait till you get to The Scar...

in europe, we're at book 6 which i just finished a week ago. it only gets better!
he is very wordy but not in the robert jordan sense, the pace is ALOT faster with alot going on. the first time i read the first of the series (gardens of the moon) i didnt understand what was going on until at least 3/4 of the way through. well worth it though and the second read reveals much more.
I just finished Martin's latest book A Feast for Crows and it continues the series in fine form, although it's only really half of the book that he actually wrote. Apparently, it was too long, so they had to split it into two volumes. Jon, Tyrion, and several of the other key characters are only mentioned and won't be seen until the next volume.
One of the best fantasy series I've ever read, largely because he avoids the usual cliches and isn't afraid to write for an adult audience with all the bad language and sex that one would expect in a "real" world.
Credulous at best, your desire to believe in angels in the hearts of men.
Tyrion is hands down my favorite character, followed by Arya and Jon...
one thing he does so well is remind the reader that life in the middle ages was short, brutal and dirty... much more realistic than most fantasy authors.

For the record, my name isn't based on his, the prince from the 10th narnia book (Tirian), or the y-axis scrolling shooter released by Epic back in the day.
Er, not that anyone was saying it was.
Um.
Look over there!
