I know he's everyone's favorite literary whipping boy these days, but I once considered myself a fan and I was sad to hear about this.

Hope he pulls through.

As long as the f*cker finishes the last book first...

EDIT: As one who has joined in to some degree on the bashing-of-the-later-books, and as one who is just finishing up a whirlwind reread of books 1 through 10, I've gotta say they hold together very well when read as a single series (rather than individual books with 2 year gaps in between). Very few of the complaints that people tend to levy towards the books hold true when they're read as a single story.

Removing all bone marrow and starting his blood production / immune system from scratch? I salute anyone who can look up to that prospect and not fall apart.
Best of luck to him.

And if I haven't seen further, it's because those bloody giants blocked my sight.

I've been a big fan of Robert Jordan since the beginning, and after the last 2-3 books (which IMO have been EXCELLENT) I have been toying with Chumpy's idea of re-reading the series in back to back to back to back to back to back to back to back to back to back to back to back fashion (if I can find the time!).

In the linked letter from RJ, it really sounds like he's got the right attitude about conquering this disease, and I for one, hope that he does get those 30 more years to finish writing all the books he has ideas for right now. He's got the plan to write 'em, and it's part of my plan to read them all.

Best of luck RJ!

This is indeed sad news, and something I have worried about with his less than healthy life style. Hopefully he will pull through. As his wife is his editor, and some believe she has written some of WoT, I am sure she would make sure the last book came out if he is not able to finish it.

Nothing, I meant being worried about him dying befoe he finished the series, I had been envisioning a heart attack or somesuch though.

Best of luck to Mr. Rigney in fighting this thing.

I've been an unhappy fan of the series, but have to admit to reading it all the way through several times. (If nothing else, it is GREAT escapism, drop into those books and you'll have months of ignoring your real problems)

I would suggest folks try listening to the audio versions of the books. Most libraries have the series, and if you have a long commute or like to listen while doing housework or fiddling in the garage they make for good listening. The two readers do an excellent job.

I sat down and figured out how long it would take me to write all of the books I currently have in mind, without adding anything new and without trying rush anything. The figure I came up with was thirty years.

I really hope that means one more Wheel of Time book and then 29 years of writing new series.

If he honestly thinks he needs to spend 30 more years of braid tugging he may also have dementia.

Yup, he means one more WoT book and then everything else he has ideas for, RJ/JR and Tor have already gone on record as saying book 12 is the end of WoT.

yea it is sad news. I remember reading his Conan books when I was younger and then I was so excited to his name on the Eye of The World book when I was checking out at a bookstore years ago. I loved the series ... until it dragged on and on. I woudl defend it even ... until book 10. Book 10 absoluetly bored me beyond means. i had read every book until then. But that one forced me to switch to a book on tape for my commutes to work, whereby trapping myself in an enclosed area and forcing myself to "enjoy" it. That said, Book 11 was pretty good.

This is also a common treatment for leukemia, though this is done with donor marrow instead of the patient's own. A little known side effect is that the patient will change blood type to match the donor's if they didn't match initially. For this procedure there's the danger of graft versus host disease, which my wife's brother suffered from before he passed away last year. However, if they're using Jordan's own marrow cells for the "transplant", then that doesn't sound like it'd be an issue.

On a whim, I decided to check in and see how Robert Jordan was doing. This is from his blog on December 22nd.

Quote:

This is a very short post, I'm afraid. I know it's been awhile since I posted last, but various things kept getting in the way. Still, here goes, with the best Christmas present I've ever received. Something I had to share without any delay.

As you all no doubt know by now, the marker for amyloids is something called Lambda Light Chains, which are found in the blood. The normal range is between 1 and 3. Five months ago, I was at 75. Four months ago, that had gone up to 96. The higher the LLC number, the worse for you. So I wasn't doing so hot.

This morning the Mayo gave me my most recent LLC number. 3.14!!!! No, that isn't a typo. 3.14!!! I'm on the brink of normal. Something I never thought I'd say about myself in any regard, frankly. I've got Liston the ropes, guys, and I really believe that your prayers and well-wishes have helped put him there. Now I just have to put him on the canvas. This isn't a cure, and I'm not even sure whether it will count as remission, but it means I'm still on my feet and will be for a while yet. 3.14! Hot damn!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, everybody.

I'll talk to you again after the 1st.

RJ

Good news! Regardless of what you may think of the state of the Wheel of Time series, it's great that he seems to be making some progress with his health.

His series is the Wheel of Time, so it is somewhat fitting, being circular and all.

Glad to hear he's doing better - not a fan (couldn't get past fifty pages of the first one), but wouldn't wish a blood disease on an enemy.

Any chance Terry whatshisname (not Brooks, the even more hacktacular one) has something that would stop him from inflicting his books on the world?

That is great news! I like the stories he buries in all the braid-tugging and ten-step medieval industrial processes.

Go Robert Jordan!
In spite of my angst at the last few WoT books, I sincerely hope he recovers from this disease.

Robert, you've given me many, many hours of entertainment and I thank you.
I pray you beat this, and I sincerely hope you live to write ALL that you hope to write.

If anything, his explanation of how magic works has been refreshingly original. A lot of his build up towards the confrontations with the Forsaken and the dispatching of them have been exceedingly entertaining. This, of course, leads to the frustration and accusations of stalling when he fails to knock down these major plot points in his later books.

I definitely am thankful for the entertainment his works have brought this non-book reader. I am glad it appears his health has taken a positive turn.
