Oblivion 360 problem and the fix for it
Wednesday, March 22nd, 2006 - 3:59am
No jokes, here is the word straight from Bethesda:
Quote:
Oblivion uses the Xbox 360 hard drive extensively to cache (copy and reuse) game data. This is done to optimize all loading the game does. It has been found in rare cases on some Xbox 360s that the cached data can get overly fragmented. This exhibits itself by the game taking a long time to load anything from menus, dialogue, sounds, objects, levels, and more.To solve this problem, reset your Xbox, and hold down the A button as the game is booting up. If any button is held while Oblivion is loading, it will clear its hard drive cache, and create a new one.
Once you see the "Bethesda Softworks" logo video, the game is already loaded, and the cache should have been cleared.
Note, this does not effect your game in any way other than loading. You will not lose any saved data.

I saw some random comment about this on the official forums, but it is good to hear it from the horses mouth. Thanks for the info, Souldaddy.

I'm curious to know how it plays without a harddrive.
NOTE: This is not a doodle bug.

I guess what puzzles me is how badly fragmented the Oblivion files could be with 2-3 days since it's release. Does it defrag the 360 completely (ie. benefiting other games) or does it simply re-index and move the Oblivion cache?
XBL/Swat R2 SPORE/Swatr2 WAR/Nephlokan
I'm guessing that it must clear the cache (across all games) completely, but who really knows?
XBL/PSN: zeroKFE | BHA: zeroKFE | Spore: zeroKFE
I think that games share the same cache area... there for Oblivion will over write what ever was stored before and in turn if you specify to clear cache, it will clear all. <- Just a thought.
My question would be how storage of cache done on the HD is and what kind of defrag operation is there prevent from having really bad fragmentation issue. I assume files fewer than 20mb will be defragged automatically"… or some thing. Just wondering.

If it works like the original Xbox then its one cache for all games. At least its a more elegant way of clearing the cache on the 360, on the Xbox you had to load 3 different games back to back to clear the cache.
My days of not taking you seriously have certainly come to a middle.

Does this action clearthe cache for any game loading, or just Oblivion?

I think it's only Oblivion... beacuse, IMO, it is the first game to actually use the HD for cache.

Souldaddy you saved my life with this info. I had 20 hours into the game and my 360 would freeze atleast once a day. My load times were taking over 60 sec and sometimes longer. When I would talk to someone the game would freeze from 5 sec to 30 sec. It was acting like I was having a over heating problem or something like that. After my game froze up for the 3rd day in a row. I wanted to see if anyone was having this same problem so I came to my favorite site and here was the thread! Souldaddy thanks so much bro. I had to do it twice before it worked but now I don't have even one problem and everything is running as smooth as silk.

EDIT: Brae, I just saved my own ass with that fix. My game was doing the same thing your was, I did what you said that I said to do
and it saved the day!

I've found that if you bring up the 360 guide menu during play and start playing music off of your hard drive if halves most of the load times, not exactly certain why but I believe it probably lets the machine stream more game off the disc, and less music. I've put about 60-70 hours into Oblivion over the last week and I've only had it freeze or crash on me three times, and all of those were proceeded by about a minute by the game's sound getting buggy (which is how I came to this conclusion). This may just be my imagination but it seems to work for me. Let me know.
(and if you don't want to listen to say, Aesop Rock, while playing a fantasy game you can just pause the music and play without it. The rest of the sound in the game is so good you won't notice the missing background music)
The masses have agreed to split the seed and let it bleed.
Very interesting. Does it have the same effect if you just turn the music slider all the way down? If not, those who want to play without the music might try starting a song from the guide and then pausing it. Then you get nothing but environmental sounds plus ths potential load time reduction.
I'll have to play with it myself tonight. Personally, since I absolutely love the music I've been having a hard time letting it go. However, I really like being able to hear the ambient sounds, so I've been playing with the music very, very low. If it really does reduce the load times, however, perhaps I will go with the music off for a while and see if I can live without it.

wow this is great info, I have not had the time to get to far into the game yet, but this will save me a headache or two when I do start playing it a lot.

Skimmer warning: you might not want to skim this post.
Irony is a cruel, cruel mistress. Just yesterday I was telling Fly not to worry too much about breaking quests, and then last night I stumbled upon on of the easily breakable quests myself. The following spoiler regards one of the mage guild recommendation quests, but trust me, you WILL want to read it, especially if you are playing on the 360. On the PC you can unbreak the quest with a simple console command, but 360 users will have to either go back to a previous save game or wait for a patch. Luckily I had a save game that wasn't too far back to revert to, since who knows when the patch will come (it will come though; there is quite an uproar about this on the official boards). Anyway, here goes:
There will always be something like this that will slip through QA, but it is a shame that it is on such a vital quest. Anyway, just be warned, especially if you are playing on the 360. I'm going to go cross-post this on the other Oblivion threads, for those who aren't reading this one.

How many threads are you going to post that in?

I don't get it... and is it a Mage Guild quest?
Xbox Live: Nei HD | Playstation ID: Nei_GWJ
Just the four. It's the sort of thing that could break the game for someone, since it would prevent you from making any more progress in the mages guild. Sorry for the spam, but I don't want anyone else to suffer the very frustrating experience that I only narrowly avoided thanks to having an old save around. Since I'm not sure that everyone is following every thread, I decided it was worthwhile to post it in several places. Sorry.

Is there any way to avoid this fragmentation problem? It was causing my level loads to take a minute or more.
EDIT: They are still taking that long. All the menus and stuff are fast again but level loads take forever. What the hell is this?
Well, I don't like to toot my own horn, but I'm a pretty good amateur rectal photographer. Would you like to see my portfolio?

It plays just fine without a hard drive. I'm 30+ hours in sans hard drive and enjoying the hell out of it.

FalseGravity - My first blog.
I think the problem has to do with how full the hard drive is. I don't have much free space, and I think the cache gets fragmented fast.

I found a huge improvement in performance when I started dumping the extraneous inventory items I was hauling around into a chest in my house. Filling your pockets with hundreds of alchemy items and scrolls tend to cause a bit of slowdown, for some reason!
I would also assume that the old Morrowind "sleep for 3 days trick" would help, as all the corpses that you have left in your wake will vanish.
Requires 2 non-replaceable LR41 button cell batteries for the monkey (included)
And keys. Now if I could only drop some of these quest items. I know the real reason I can't drop them, they aren't modelled.

Probably really behind. Doing the Thieves Guild mission where I have to steal the bust of so and so and tell Lex that that one lady has it! Ring a bell. Well, I saved it right outside her shack in case I got caught. I get in, put the bust in her cupboard and tell Lex. Lex arrests her once inside. They tell me to meet Armand at the usual place. Here's my problem. He's on my map I go there no Armand. Reloaded the save, still no. I get kicked out of the Thieves Guild still no armand. He's no where to be found. I went to S'krivva in Bravil and pay the fine to get back in and still no Armand when I come back. Any help? Pretty fired up. Way in to the game Arch-Mage and all. I have gone on and done other missions and whenever I go back to the Thives Guild Quest. It shows Armand on the map but he's just not there. What to Do??
Are you going to meet him at the right time of day? I think it was between midnight and 2 AM. Otherwise you can't find him.
Xbox Live : Aries GWJ PSN : AriesGWJ Spore : Ariesgwj
I took a quick look around and found this. Hope it helps:
"A very frustrating bug can occur after you are told to meet Armand in the garden on "the next midnight" and he doesn't show up. Even after multiple midnights he still stays in the land of the missing. Try pickpocketing a beggar near the waterfront so you are "cast out of the thieves guild". Make it your active quest, and this time at midnight Armand is there to collect your fine. Pay the fine and switch back your active quest to The Elven Maiden and speak to him again. You should be advanced."
