Ford: "Indy 4" Script Ready

Looks like
Harrison Ford can finally take the fedora out of mothballs.

The Hollywood megastar told a German magazine on Wednesday that after rewrites too numerous to count, he and director
Steven Spielberg are finally satisfied with the script for the forever-in-the-works fourth installment of the whip-wielding, tomb-raiding adventurer.

"Steven Spielberg and I now have a script in hand that we both like. I believe that we can start with the filming soon," Ford was quoted as saying in an interview with Fit for Fun, a German lifestyle and entertainment magazine.

The 63-year-old actor, who's been making the publicity rounds this month for Firewall--his first certifiable action thriller since 1997's Air Force One--demurred, however, on a start date.

That depends on the busy schedules of the Indiana Jones triumvirate of Ford, Spielberg and producer
George Lucas. But Ford indicated he was ready to get back into the swing of things, adding that he needed "to do a little practicing with the whip" to avoid injuries.

Ford's reps did not comment further, and a Lucasfilm spokesperson said Wednesday that Lucas was not available to comment on the status of Indy 4. But appearing at last week's Empire Awards in London, his producing partner, Rick McCallum, said Lucas had made his final tweaks to the script blah blah blah blah...

To me, that many rewrites does not bode well.

To me, messing with perfection does not bode well.

I will say that Spielberg is a much more able story teller than Lucas so maybe it won't be a tragedy. Maybe. As long as it doesn't have aliens in it.

Oh please Lord don't let it have aliens in it.

I'm gonna need that picture of Edward James Olmos' ass back.

This is one of those movies I'm resolving to be cautiously optimistic about. I mean, making a "final" sequel to a movie series more than ten years after the last one came out can't be all bad, right?

I specifically remember that the "The Last Crusade" was touted as "definitely the last Indiana Jones movie." The reason: Harrison Ford said he's "getting too old for those kinds of movies." So, WTF?

3 is a nice number. Lots of great trilogies out there. 3 Star Wars movies was nice, 3 LotR, 3 Alien movies would have been enough, and 3 Indi movies was just right. What could he possibly be finding that would top the Holy Grail? The item used to describe items that are hard to find.

Bah, Raiders of the Lost Ark is by far the best Indiana Jones movie. The Last Crusade is an improvement over the terribly weak Temple of Doom, but it doesn't ever come close to the first one.

Terribly weak is out of line for ToD. The mine cart ride alone is a staple for Indiana Jones. Crazy heart grabbing Molaram. Ceiling lowering with Indi and Short Round inside. Short Round himself. The whole bridge scene.

My ring tone sings "Anything Goes" for chrissakes; that movie was good. It wasn't the best but it can stand on its own and deserves to be in the trilogy.

It's funny. I remember Spielberg making a big deal about the level of violence in ToD. Seems positively tame now.

The second two were enjoyable but mostly forgettable aside from a couple of action sequences (usual reservations here about this being only my opinion, etc.). But the first one was one of the best adventure movies ever made. So it set kind of a high bar, and the other two suffer by comparison.

I think that perhaps we shouldn't bother continuing this particular discussion. It's one that most made up their minds on years ago.

For instance... If I had to rate them I would rate a tie between Raiders and Last Crusade with Temple of Doom in third, but I enjoy a lot of the comedy in Last Crusade and thus have more fun watching it than the other two. I don't necessarily consider it a better movie than Raiders, I just enjoy it more. To each his own and all that.

I'm still retaining my cautious optimism for this new one though. They're bringing back the three biggest parts of the original trilogy in their Producer, Director, and the lead Actor as well. Who knows what will happen. It might even turn out ok and be worth a viewing or two.

Final thoughts on this for me would be that I would love there to be another Indiana Jones movie the same caliber as the old ones but I'm not going to hold my breath.

I am less cautiously optimistic and more hopefully pessimistic.

Don't get me wrong, Raiders is a great movie with a few, minimal pacing issues. Temple of Doom is also great with an annoying chick. The reason I find The Last Crusade perfect is that there are no flaws for my overly critical personality to grab onto. Pacing, drama, humor, action, plot, character developement, etc. are all doled out with a precision and restraint that leaves no room for me to do anything but be entertained.

I think Harrison is older now then Connery was at the time they made Last Crusade. I just don't really see him selling the character very effectively anymore.
