Psychonauts: which system?

I'm really keen on picking up a copy of Psychonauts after listening to the podcast. It's been on my list of 'must buy' games for a while, but I'm finally going to pick it up.

Now, I'm either going to pick up the PC or PS2 version, since those are among the two system types I have at home. I'm sure the PC version will look much nicer, but the catch is that I'd like to play this game in my living room, and not sitting in my office all by myself. My wife would probably love watching this game (as she does many others), so I'm wondering: is the PS2 version of Psychonauts that bad? I've looked and looked for any side by side comparisons on the net and haven't found anything worthwhile, so I'm wondering if any other Goodjers have played the PS2 version and what their thoughts are?

Platformers are almost always better on a console due to the ease of playing on a pad (unless you buy one for your PC) But personally I would go for the ps2 version... I picked up my copy about 5 days ago and it is certainly an EXCELLENT game.... I'm up to the *blank* exploring that painters brain (didnt wanna spoil the location I'm at seeing as you havent played it yet).... can you believe it only just came out over here?? Jeez and I thought the 360 was taking its sweet time...... come on march 24th!!

I think it comes down to cost and convenience. Do you own a gamepad for your PC? If not, you'll have to drop an additional $20 to get something worth using. Of course, you can get the PC version pretty cheap @ GoGamer (it's now ~$15) so the end cost will be about the same.

I'd also suggest hitting a Gamestop/EB Games/etc. My local shop had a used Xbox copy for $24.99 making the decision an easy one.

I agree with chum ps2 or pc. If you have a 360 (not sure if it works for it...) the controller is better than ps2.

As Rimmer and Chum said, you will want to play this game with a console style controller, so make your decision based upon that criteria.

I'm currently playing through the game on the Xbox, and the only complaint I have is that two of the three psycic powers you can have equipped at any one time are mapped to the black and white buttons, which (as we all know) are useless. If only the game ran in backwards compatibility mode on the 360 I'd be set, but as it is I'm doing a lot of looking down at my controller.

In any case, the PS2 controller should be fine in this regard. If you really want to do the PC version, and you think you will want to buy a 360 sometime in the future, I would suggest dropping some cash on a wired 360 controller. It is without a doubt the best designed and most comfortable controller I've ever used, it should work fine with your PC, and you'll be glad to have the extra controller when you get the 360.

I already have a Logitech Wingman for a PC controller, so I could technically use it to play the game. However, I'd like to play it on my PS2 since I'd be that much more confortable in the living room, and my wife would get to watch. I actually found a good comparison article on IGN detailing the differences on the PS2 and other systems, and honestly I think I'll spring for the PS2 version.

I'd avoid the PS2 version. I've played it on the PS2 and the PC, and it looks much better on the PC. The PS2 port, unlike the 360 and PC versions, wasn't done in-house by Double Fine -- they contracted it out to Budcat, and Budcat didn't do a particularly good job, in my opinion. If you go with the PS2 version, you'll be missing out on a number of visual effects that add a lot to the game. You'll also get mushier textures, annoyingly long load, times, and more bugs. Still a great game, but it suffers on the PS2.

If you don't have an Xbox and you can stand to play Psychonauts away from your couch, I'd highly recommend playing it on the PC with a good gamepad. The 360 USB gamepad is awesome, if you're willing to spring for it.

As for playing on the PC, it is possible to do so without a gamepad. I'm about nine hours into the game, using your basic keyboard/mouse.

However, while feasible, this route can lead to lots of frustration. On several occasions, I've had to restrain myself from throwing my mouse against the wall because of how annoying the problems with control can be. Even though I'm nine hours into the game, I'm not that far into the story, largely thanks to these control issues. I won't ruin anything, but certain areas took a hell of a long time to complete because Raz refused to do, or would do something else, than what I was "telling" him to do.

If it wasn't for the fact that I enjoy the playing it (even with the control problems), I would have just given up on the game awhile ago.

So yeah, if you have money to spare, get a gamepad and play on the PC. If you do decide to play on the PC without a gamepad, you may want to download the demo first to see if you can stand the control issues.

PC + 360 gamepad is the way to go if you don't have an Xbox. The Xbox was the target platform and it shows, but a good PC with a great gamepad does the job just as well.

I am just starting this game (PC), and I've been playing through the first mind sequence (basically the training run). I don't think it's too much of a spoiler to say that the final obstacle (rotating walkway room with blades) had me pulling my hair out. I'm playing with a gamepad, and after about 500 deaths, I was just about to come back here and tell you Psychonaut supporters you're full of s**t. Then I tried it with the keyboard and mouse. Made it through the first time. So strange considering there are so many stages before this that would have driven me crazy with the keyboard and mouse.

So, I'll be playing both ways I guess...

I actually got used to using keyboard and Mice to play this game... Though I do wonder how much more different playing with a controller would be. What keypads do you guys recommend for a PC?

That is the one I use. Just stay away from the Logitech Dual Action as it's analog stick's are horrible.

What gamepad were you using? Because this sequence was as easy on the Xbox as it seems it was when you went mouse-and-keyboard on PC.

Logitech is always a good way to go for non-1st party accessories. I have the wireless Logitech PS2 and Xbox controllers, and they are very high quality. I actually only use them now, and not the stock controllers that came with my systems.

I had a hard time with this one the first time I played the game, but the second time it was a breeze. Both times on Xbox. I think it may have less to do with the control-scheme than with the fact that this is one of the first times the game screws with the perspective wildly. Some people aren't affected by this at all, but for me it took a little getting used to.

I picked up an x360 controller this weekend for Psychonauts and I'm enjoying the hell out of it. Thanks for the tip. I am a PC only gamer, I have never owned a console, so I'm not much used to game pads, but the x360 controller works better than anything I've used before. The controls seem to make sense, and I've never liked playing platform games w/ a mouse and keyboard.

My only problem is figuring out where to map the 3 psi powers to. They still default to the keyboard. Any suggestions?

Major props to Tim Schaefer for this one. It really takes me back to the days of Lucas Arts adventure games, some of my seminal gaming experiences. I'm having shloads of fun, which is the point of gaming. It makes me wonder about the games that I've played that really weren't fun. Why can all games be this fun? I picked up Ralph Koster's A Theory of Fun this week, so maybe he can give me some insight.

Anyway, Psychonauts is a great game, and it plays well on a PC w/ a good controller.

Ok that's it. Looks like I'm destined for the 360 controller/PC version myself.
Initially I was looking for a PS2 version (none to be found locally), but after The Fly's remarks on the quality and the good reviews of the 360 controller, it looks like the way to go.

I would suggest going with the same style mapping as the Xbox version. Put the float/target button on one trigger and the the psi powers on the remaining shoulder buttons. Then map everthing else to the face buttons; A for jump, Y for interact, B for cancel, and X for attack. I'm not sure how the item/power selection works on the PC, but on the Xbox they use the D pad to bring up the menu and the left stick to choose an item.

Thanks, I'll go w/ the xbox defaults. That makes a lot of sense.

I love playing it on the PC because I can take screenshots of cool things. Like the memories of the War general teacher, and all that. I'm actually playing it with just a keyb+mouse, and it's ok for me.

I think it's my favorite controller ever.

The one thing the PS2 controller had on the Xbox was the extra shoulder buttons instead of the tiny black/white buttons. So for the 360, MS tossed the black/white buttons and made them shoulder buttons, while still keeping the first two shoulder buttons in those nice triggers. 360 controller FTW.

Agreed. I don't have the body of experience to make the comparison, but dayum, my gaming experience w/ Psychonauts has been out-fraking-standing. My only complaint is that since the triggers are analog, I can't map button functions to them, at least in Psychonauts. I'm sure they will be great for driving or flying games, but instead of mapping psi-powers to them like suggested above, I have to resort to putting one on a shoulder button, one on the L-stick button and one on the start button.

But enough quibbling. The controller and the game are just oodles of fun, I have to keep gushing about them. At first I was just happy to be back in a Tim Schaeffer imagined world. Funky artwork, psychic-summer-camp-indian-burial-ground-secret-agent setting, bizarre dialog et. al. But every so often the game blows my mind with a new level that just cracks me up and amazes me at the same time. Goggalor FTW!*

(plus, as I'm at work today, I keep imagining the students zombie-walking and moaning "teeeveeeeee" and "haaaackey saaaaaack". It makes the day much more enjoyable.

Oh, that is really annoying. Have you only tried the button mapping in the game? I'm a Mac user so I can't try it out for myself, but I wonder if Microsoft's driver package has button mapping utility that can be used outside the game that would allow the analog triggers to be mapped to digital button functions...

Hmmm... I have the Logitech Dual action sticks as well as Cordless Rumblepad 2's and I can't say I noticed much diffference in the analog controllers. The Dual action have occasionally needed to be recalibrated but I've chalked that up to my kids being the primary users.

I find they both work great for Psychonauts.

I had it in my hand, I ran to the place I needed to go, and now it's gone.

I just spent an hour running around talking to every damned character on the map and got NOTHING.

Also: I have enough of those cards and the psi-cores to up-rank four times, but no matter how many times I talk to the old extra-ugly guy there's no way for me to "combine them" as the game keeps telling me to do.

I'm irritated already.
