I just wanted to share with everyone that yesterday, February 22nd at 8:36 AM, my son Aidan Michael was born!

Some of you might remember that he wasn't due until May but the good news is that he's healthy and breathing on his own without a ventilator. My wife's water broke some time around 3AM and the contractions didn't start until 8 in the morning. We rushed to the hospital and were barely in a birthing suite when the baby started coming. It only took ten minutes of pushing for him to arrive. He's just a little tiny guy at 2 lbs. 8 oz, and 14 inches but he's doing really good now in the NICU. The doctors have told us that they expect him to grow up just fine and that there were no complications but they are planning on keep Aidan until May.

What a day! Now my fellow Goodjers, any suggestions for a father of a preemie? There isn't much info online other than to give love and affection to him which is great but I expect there's a great deal more that I need to learn. Thanks in advance for any info or congradulations! Woot!

Could it be that the removal of most of the electronic entertainment in the Lock household actually induced labor?

And more importantly, congrats!

Wow, congrats LockAndLoad! You must've been beside yourself at having this happen 2-3 months ahead of time. I'm glad though that the birth went without complications, and that they have confidence in his health.

I've never been a father but, this sounds like some good advice:

1) Get some sleep

Wow, that's got to be exciting and a little scary at the same time. It's good that the doctors are confident. Take good care of them both.

My son was a premie.. my advice, listen to EVERYTHING the nicu doctors and expecially the nurses say. The best thing you can do is visit as much as possible. Also "K-Care" is the best thing for any nicu baby. (K-care is you barechested with the baby laying on you cuddling you). Remember the rule is 2 weeks in nicu for each week they are early. Take it slow. There are Nicu support groups (usually there are flyers all over the place. Talk to the reps from these as they are fountains of knowledge. Help with the day-to-day care of your baby. We found taking TONS of pictures helped as well as leaving disposable cameras for the nurses to take "funny things the baby does" pictures for us worked nicely.

Also don't be affraid to get second opinions on your child's care if you feel something isn't right. Nicu babies tend to have bad acid reflux. The one nicu doctor told us there was nothing that can be done for it. Had we not asked the nurses and other doctors we wouldn't have had our son's acid problems fixed (it was surgery to fix it by repairing the through to stomach valve) and he would have been in much pain.

Also good luck finding premie cloths!

Oh wow. How's the wife? It has to be hell to have given birth and then not be able to take the baby with you. I'm glad everyone is doing ok! Thank gods for modern medicine.

Welcome to the world Aidan, hang on a little while, and Auntie Deva will teach you how to make your electronics ninja-proof.

Congats Lock! My advice, though it probably won't be necessary, is to spend as much time at possible at the hospital loving on and talking to the little critter. Also, be VERY attentive to your wife. Once she is released from the hospital, every fiber of her being will want to take the baby home and will ache because she can't. You will need to be as supportive and nuturing to her as possible. The aforementioned NICU support groups are probably a very good idea.

I was born that early and around that size, and I turned out OK. But they took me from my mother and wouldn't let her see me for a long while, and she cried, so the doctor told her to "get over it."

Congratulations and best wishes on the tough times ahead. Both of ours had jaundice from high bilirubin levels, even worse with the second, and with Fáelán (the second) he was stuck in the hospital for almost two weeks getting the UV treatment. They both had followup in-home "bili-blanket" treatments for a while. Complications are rough when it's already stressful enough.

Glad everything's okay. Sounds like everything will be alright so don't get stressed. Think of it this way, you get an early preview build three months before the final release date.

As some have already said, you very well might have discovered a new way of inducing labor.

Well done sir!

I'm sure you know this LL, but Aidan is a great name choice considering the situation, Aidan means little firey one, a great name for a little tough guy.
