XBX Strategy Games
Friday, January 13th, 2006 - 1:34pm
I would of swore this has been talked about before, but my search gave me nothing. So cough away as long as you give me a link:>)
Are there any strategy games for the X-Box (rts or tb. Rather the later, but if a rts is good with the right features, I might be interested.)
Thanks.

Shattered Union is a turn based game as is Daisenryaku VII (I probably misspelled that). For real time there are the Kingdom Under Fire games (which are more actiony then strategy...y), Goblin Commander, and some Alien vs. Predator game.
My days of not taking you seriously have certainly come to a middle.

I can vouch for Daisenrayaku VIII. Kinda like a more complicated (but still fun) version of Advance Wars. Probably worth the twenty bucks if you're into that kinda thing.

Dai Senryaku VIII is excellent.
By the way, can anyone confirm my suspicion that this game is a sequel the the equally superb SNES game titled "Super Conflict." My searches for information on this matter have come up empty (although this may be because I am misspelling the newer game's name).

Shattered Union is not very good.
At all.
I'm glad it was a rental. Just watch the intro then turn it off.

I think that the only prequel to hit the US was for the Saturn and named something else. For the life of me, though, I can't remember where I came up with this info. Might be wrong.

Yeah, I hated Shattered Union as well. I covered it for Radio last week, but cut the segment because it turned out to be twice as boring as I found the game to be. I can see how some might find it entertaining, but for me it didn't even come close.

Gladius was pretty good if you like Tactics style strategy/RPGs. And Wrath Unleashed, the updated Archon is pretty and fun, but the load times are on the noticeably long side.

It falls outside of the realm of War-based strategy games, but Phantom Dust really should count as a RTS game. It uses a card-game like mechanism to give you weapons and you battle in 3rd person mode in destructible environments. It is also my favorite XBox game, and one of the best value games I have ever played at 20 bucks new. You might want to try to rent it first, to see if it appeals to you, since it isn't what would generally be called a strategy title, despite being all about the strategy.

I see. Well, if it is not the same series, then at the very least Dai Senryaku and Conflict are twins separated at birth.

Oh yea, Gladius. That was a very cool game if you took the time to really get into it. Excessively massive as well, like 100 hours or more.

You'd be amazed at how much energy and bandwidth Donan saves over a year by omitting the O in Xbox.

Dai Senryaku VII is the must-get in the conversation, IMO, but one that I haven't seen mentioned is Future Tactics. You can find it for under $10 and it is definitely worth the money. It's a turn-based tactics game with cartoonish graphics, but a very neat aiming system (much better than dice rolling) and a pretty hefty campaign.
There are also the Kingdom Under Fire games to fill your RTS needs.
Slightly off topic, but who else is excited about Age of Kings coming to the DS next month in turn-based form?
I'm more interested in the newly announced Battle For Middle Earth II Xbox 360 port. I haven't the slightest idea as to how they are going to map that to a gamepad.

Miami, FLSeattle, WAPretty much all of them have been mentioned here already but Sid Meier's Pirates! wasn't mentioned. Somewhat of a grasp I know but what do you expect? Commandos 2: Men of Courage was excellect on PC so give it a shot if you haven't tried it yet. Worms 3D is also strategy. Lastly there is Magic: The Gathering - Battlegrounds and Wrath Unleashed. All other strategy games have been mentioned.

The Kingdom Under Fire games are really great, once you get the hang of them. Hard as PISS, but very, very good.

I want to second Atras' suggestion on Phantom Dust. I was lucky enough to pick it up from a fellow GWJer on a trade, and absolutely love the game. The gameplay consists of a superb blend of luck, skill, and planning that caters very well to anyone that enjoys RTS, Collectible Card Game, Action/Adventure, or Action/RPG style games. Very unique and fun stuff!

Phantom Dust is really awesome, I wish it was on the 360 BC list.

Not on topic exactly, but did you ever play the original Conflict?

I played it on an emulator once. It was fun, but mostly it was notable as the game that came before Super Conflict.

Not if you had played it when it was new.
My best friend and I rented that game many times, as we never once saw a copy of the game for sale anywhere, ever. Back then, it was the only game like that we'd ever seen.

Gladius RULES! I had 136 hours in when I finished it. Great game! And has co-op!
I too enjoyed Phantom Dust, and a psudo-RTS game for Xbox is Kingdom Under Fire: Crusaders and its sequel, Heroes.

Gladius sucks! Played 6 hours and was so bored to death I'm glad it was a rental.
That Daywhatsit VII game sounds neat, a more complicated Advance Wars you say? Is it import only?
It's been ported to the states, and cheap to boot.

Can't find a topic for Battle for Middle Earth II, and it's a bit old (and apparently underplayed) to get it's own topic now, so I'll settle for here:
Got this from Gamefly and am on the 7th mission of the Good campaign. So far mixed reactions...it's a good attempt at an RTS on the console but still clearly would play better on the desktop (I'm not clear on whether the initial design was for desktop or console). Things go awfully slowly (I suspect to give the console user time to get around the map) and there's often twiddliness in trying to select things. Thank goodness I guessed that double-clicking the 'A' would select all the nearby stuff, or I would have gone nuts. Which touches on the fact that, for a game style foreign to consoles, they should have had a rich tutorial explaining all the twiddly details but they didn't.
Nonetheless it didn't get the heave ho back to Gamefly mostly because the feel is very true to LOTR and I am willing to give it a chance. The first 6 missions are deadly easy (playing on Normal) and the 7th falls off a cliff of difficulty. Suddenly I'm in a timed mission and have to defend three fronts, building up a base and units, and jumping all over a large map (which is rather painful on the console) directing the fighting.
I replayed this mission numerous times and am still getting creamed. This isn't annoying me (yet) as it's causing me to really learn how to play the game and to get into all the nooks and crannies of the command menus that I haven't needed to bother with until now. I'd certainly be doing better on desktop (but that wouldn't increase my gamer score, now would it?) I have at least a couple of more things to try before I get more frustrated.
I spent hours replaying the mission and suspect I have at least a few hours more to get it right...if anyone has suggestions, I'm all ears! (I think next up is actually making use of the Dwarven mines to move units around quickly...)
By the way, building up a fortress and giving it flaming catapults is quite satisfying, and very LOTR-ish...

That was Iron Storm wasn't it? It had the typical Daisenryaku mechanics. I think. There was a Daisenryaku for the Super Famicom, but I don't know if it made it stateside to the SNES. I had it while I lived in Japan. It took a while to resolve turns, that's for sure. Daisenryaku is a long running series in Japan (well, hence the 7 in Daisenryaku VII I guess
)
Might have been? I dunno, this thread is pretty old. I don't remember much about Daisenryaku anymore, other than I liked it.

Finished the Good campaign in Battle for Middle Earth II -- by the end the gameplay was very interesting and I love the presentation, which feels different from any other RTS I've played, in that, a bit like Company of Heroes, I'm just sending guys around this world, not "playing a game".
For some reason, though, only the last two missions of the Good campaign bother to make use of the interesting base building and the full combat potential of the game. I'm hoping that the Evil campaign gives me more of the meaty stuff.
