GamezNFlix online rental service

GamezNFlix is an online rental service for video games, movies and "adult" as they call it. Normally I try to stay away from these "we rent everything" places but two things got me interested in GamezNFlix

1) Distribution centers in PA and KY. Hell yeah.

2) The most expensive plan (3 games/dvds out at once) is only $16.99. The 1 out at a time plan is $8.99 and the 2 out at a time plan is $12.99.

So I did my usual litmus test, I searched for as many games as I could think of to see if they had them. I think the only ones I couldn't find were Ikagura and Rez, and I searched for plenty of niche titles (Ico, Psychonauts, Ootogi, ect.). I even had Certis try to think of some and still found them.

So I gave it a shot, they had a 2-week trial so I tried that. However I found out after I signed up that the 2-week trial was where they sent you stuff pre-selected for you, you couldn't add things to your queue during the trial period. Beats me exactly how that's supposed to get you to want to use the service, but whatever. It's cheap, so I just went ahead and paid for the first month to try it out.

I filled my queue Sunday night, 3 games were shipped out Monday morning. I got Prince of Persia 3, FarCry: Instincts and Destroy All Humans. All at the top of my list too, which is nice because with other services I'd randomly get games lower in my queue even though the ones at the top were listed as available. PoP3 even had Short Wait listed, but I got it first thing Monday. Shipped Monday, showed up Wed. I'm about to pop them into the console now and give it a shot. So far I'm liking the service.

Just a heads up to the East Coast GWJers who were looking for a decent online rental service, so far, so good. I'll update as time goes on.

Give us an update in a few weeks and let us know.. That $250/year plan for 6 movies/games out at a time is VERY tempting.

Does anyone have any thoughts on investing in online rental services like this? A friend had bought a handful of Netflix shares back when they started at something like $6 per share, and right now they're hovering around the $25 area. GamezNFlix stock is starting at WELL under a dollar per stock, but they have a strong business relationship with Circuit City, which leads me to believe that they'll have more luck than other small startup rental houses. I'm thinking about sinking some significant money into this company, although I'm a bit nervous as Circuit City doesn't seem to be marketing as aggressively as they used to.

Thoughts?

I notice for the 360 they have a bunch of games listed for rent that are not released...
I wish netflix would add games, and um Adult (and not that soft core crap they have now). Course that would only get me in trouble with the Misses at some point so maybe it's all for the best on both counts .

When you add them to your queue it lets you know if they're not released yet. So it's sorta just queueing them up for when they do get released.

Sounds cool... but what is the rest of the country supposed to do? I've been waiting for BlockbusterOnline to integrate game rentals online. They give you 2 coupons for free rentals (including games) from a real store, but the one near me never has games I want.

Let's see, you're in Northern California? Well then, what online game rental places ship out of California .... oh all of them. The problem up until now has been the East Coast, California has every other online game rental place that exists.

I forgot to chime in with my opinion but so far I'm pretty impressed with the service so far. I signed up Wednesday night, on Thursday they shipped me both Fire Emblem (GCN) and Gun (XBX) which both arrived on Saturday. Other than some minor lagginess with their website and it's semi-confusing interface (wish I could filter the results by just the consoles I own) I'm pretty content so far. We'll see how well it holds up but for now I'm definately a satisfied customer.

Also, thanks for the endorsement for Gun, Fletcher. I'm 35% of the way though it after 6 hours of gloriously violent, Western-movie gameplay and I couldn't be a happier gamer.

Here's an update, I sent my first game back Saturday, they got it Monday, and they're going to ship me a new one Tuesday.

Still going well, I really enjoy this service.

This could be what I've been looking for. Games AND movies, perfect. I went to Lackluster last night to try to rent a 360 game, and they had *nothing* in stock. Ok, NBA Live, but who considers that a game? I left irate; how could they be so stupid? Did they not know this system was coming? How are the in-stock levels on this service? If I pay a monthly fee, even an occasional stock shortage could make me bristle. For instance, there is no reason I shouldn't be able to rent Condemned or Call of Duty 2 right now.

I just took a quick look. Their stock is selling for around 1 cent, where it has been for a while. This is in large part because management seems to be paying themselves in stock and selling it on the market, meaning that they are flooding the market with new shares constantly. They're up to over 1 billion shares, and it looks like that's not going to stop any time soon. That'll make it harder for the stock to move.

The reason they pay themsleves in shares is that they are losing money hand over fist, although less this year than last year, and they don't really have the money to pay themselves. Will they make money before they throw themselves on the bankruptcy courts? Hard to say. Hopefully they can grow their way to success, but this is a company that apparently has been around since '98, so I don't think it's easy.

Bottom line, this is a neat, but dangerous, speculation, especially if you're familiar with how penny stocks work. I'd expect that in the next year you'll lose it all, or a good chunk (40%), go nowhere, losing a bit (50%), or make some good money (10%). While those odds don't sound good, the upside could be dramatic (say, a 2% chance of that). If I did invest, I'd do it with money where I wouldn't mind much if it just disappeared. I'll probably poke around a little more, and probably end up doing nothing, because that's what I usually do with this stuff...

As for the Adult, I have the perfect solution, but it may not be conducive to your situation. Think back to high school. Which of your friends was most likely to end up in the porn industry? We all had one. You knew when you were 14 that one day this guy would be in the porn industry. Now give him a call.

I never fell out of contact with my particular future pornographer and sure enough he is actually a photog for Playboy now. And once or twice a year he sends us one heck of a care package. A dozen DVD's, something cute for my wife from the company store, even a shirt for me in the last package. Best of all, all the DVD's that they review for the website and magazine get claimed by employees and he gives them out to all of us beggars.

So head on over to classmates-dot-com and find yourself an Adult.

I've been researching the company more, myself. I know that they've been flooding the market, but having acquired a larger inventory, a slowly progressing partnership with Circuit City (and plans of resurrecting a potential deal with Wal*Mart), plus the growing awareness of the company through word being spread via forums, leads me to believe that even with a terrible market rating, this might be one of the few penny stocks that has a chance to explode.

While there is so much stock available on the market, there will never be a rise to the Netflix level, I can still see the stock gradually increasing in price, potentially growing to 300-400% of it's current value, or even to higher levels if the company stops releasing hundreds of thousands of shares at a time to the market.

I'm thinking very seriously of snatching up around a fifty or a hundred thousand shares or so of GZFX.ob. If there's any way I can find out if they're going to keep throwing out more and more shares, I will use the lower or higher number of shares depending on the information I get. I figure even if the price collapses, I can swallow it, largely thanks to the wildly succesful growth of my DRPs.

It's a high risk move, but with the popularity and inventory of the company rapidly growing I think it has a much greater chance of paying off than not.

Not at all. Several of the current investors have been encouraging people on communities they frequent to join GZFX.

It's not spreading like wildfire due to the popularity of Netflix and Gamefly, but the popularity is slowly increasing, which is far safer for investment purposes anyways. Companies that explode in popularity have a tendency to die back down just as fast.

One of the questions I'd ask is if this business model is a winner, why is Netflix giving it a pass for now?

One of the fears controlling the share price will be the worry that once this company and others like it build a market, Netflix or Blockbuster Online rush into fill it with much better economies of scale, destroying profits. Is there something about this company that would prevent such a thing from happening, should it build an adequate market for its product?
