Bioware's "Mass Effect".
Fresh from VE3D.
Bioware's brand new sci-fi IP, pitting the forces of humanity against a malign AI enemy.
Apparently the first in a trilogy of games based around an "epic universe" set 200 years in the future.
Details are scant until the official unveiling later today but it will almost certainly be "squad based" as recent Bioware games have been.
There are 4 screenshots available. They look nice enough. ![]()
More details to be added soon. Official Website probably http://masseffect.bioware.com -Access currently forbidden.
More in from IGN.
October 4, 2005 - One of the many announcements coming out of X05 today was a new IP from developer BioWare. In September, BioWare announced it had licensed Epic's Unreal 3 engine for use in its next RPG. At that time, everyone began speculating about the possibility of a first-person shooter RPG from one of the most respected developers in North America. When asked if BioWare would ever consider making a first-person shooter RPG, the response was, "It's inevitable." BioWare also noted the game was in development for PC and an unspecified next-gen console.
At X05 today BioWare announced that the title of this game is Mass Effect and that it is currently in development for Xbox 360. We received the first screens of this newly announced IP today, so be sure to check them out on the media page.
The trailer revealed...nothing. I assume the ancient evil is in fact none other then the Dead Planet from The Fifth Element. ![]()

Meh, no love for the PC. Why have you foresaken us, Bioware?

Excellent news! I've been itchin' for a good, dark cyberpunkish RPG for a while now, and this sounds like it might fit the bill. I just hope it isn't too focused on action and squad combat.
EDIT: Oh, this is for the Xbox 360, eh? Screw 'em.

For the XB360? Bioware is dead to me.
Well. Bioware will be dead to me after I beat Jade Empire.

Knights of the Old Republic was an Xbox exclusive for quite some time before its migration to PC. Of course, a Jade Empire port doesn't seem to be forthcoming, but I believe sales of JE were not so great compared to KoToR...
At any rate, I plan to get an Xbox 360, so this is kick-ass news as far as I'm concerned.

I don't see thing being either a PC port or at least a good PC port if it's done at all. Remember Deus Ex: Invisible War?

Bioware's BIGGEST game ever (Dragon Age) is PC exclusive, they still looooove you.

Oh yeah, I remember that one, did Bioware develop that?

I hope my PC will be able to run Dragon Age. Hopefully it will.

A little off-the-record birdie suggests to me that the game is aiming for a 12-18 month release and will be of a similar style to a 3rd person SS2/Bioshock but with a "Bioware spin" and squad interaction.
Plans change of course.

Yes Lord, Lord, I'm gettin' there now.
Fears? Not quite. The issue is that I don't have one and I don't plan to get one.

Fears? Nah. It's just I'm buying two next-gen consoles, and the XB still isn't on that list. PS3 is a given, and who could pass up the Revolution?
the XB, as well as the XB360, are instant passes.

Well given the fact that Halo sold me on the first Xbox - Mass Effect would have sold me on the 360 if I hadnt already preordered mine on Day 1
. Looks wonderful - that little beasty jumping out was awesome - hard to tell if that would be gameplay graphics or just the movie, but either way - I am a Bioware Ho and proud of it.

There's also the fact that Jade Empire modelled its combat on fighters, and fighters are far more difficult to translate to a mouse + keyboard setup than shooters. So I wouldn't give up on Mass Effect, it seems far more suitable to a conversion.

I'll do my best to restore the balance by thread crapping on threads that are discussing PC only games and complain that they arent coming to consoles...

It looks interesting and I'm willing to give BioWare a lot of trust, but I swear, the next time I hear of "an ancient evil" in a video game, I'll hunt the developers down and force them at gunpoint to eat their high fantasy novel collection.
And if I haven't seen further, it's because those bloody giants blocked my sight.
Also, I love any sci-fi/cyberpunk game with a good story. Hopefully Bioware can pull it off. Their console games have been pretty great so far.

Looks sweet to me. So far I have passed on Jade Empire, but maybe one of these days, if the price is right...

You want Diplomacy and Hearts of Iron ported to the console too! What a coincidence.. those damn consoles always ignoring the hugely profitable wargaming market.
Do they have min specs out for this already? Are they similar to the Windows Vista or something?

Yes but the release date for that is when? I haven't heard any rumors, or seen anything on their site which gives much of a clue.
It's selling for 28 bucks new nowadays...

So how come the PS3 is a "given" and X360 is an "instant pass"? There's clearly at least one X360 game in which you're interested.
