Just picked up Rebelstar Tactical Command today. So far I'm liking it alot. I'm not really that far into it but so far I would definitely recommend this to anyone with a GBA/DS and remembers the good old days of X-Com.

Please keep us informed as you spend more time with it. This is a title I could be interested in. How does it compare to Advance Wars, etc?

Oh, sure. Like FFTA, Fire Emblem:TSS and Advance Wars 2 weren't sucking up enough time. Thanks a bunch

Seriously though, looks pretty cool.

really looking forward to this one.

one big question: is there any strategic level to the game or is it simply a series of canned missions?

I am bumping this thread because I seriously doubt most people intrested in the game even knew what this thread was about, based on the title.

I picked this one up, (the only copy EB got), yesterday. So far so good. I can't comment on the canned missions/strategy elements as I am still going through the training missions, but so far even the training bots have a sense of self preservation.

Sorry about the title Pyro.

I've progressed a little further into the game and (at least for me, maybe due to suckitude on my part) it seems the difficulty really ramps up a little too fast once you get out of the training missions. I had to replay the first mission after the last training mission 4 times just to complete it. It seems just like the beginning of X-Com when all your soldiers only had conventional weapons and the aliens have you outgunned. The big difference of course is the smaller squad size and the fact that you have to start the mission over if your main character bites it. And all that stuff in the previews about linked multiplayer, it's not there, only hotseat.

All in all, still worth it for any fan of squad level strategy games.

I've really enjoyed it so far. With the new overwatch feature it is easy to lay down a field of suppressing fire and lure the aliens into an ambush by my sniper.

If you're having trouble V-O, the best thing you can do is just take it slow and use overwatch.

I completed all the training missions and just finished the first mission so my knowledge on the game is still limited, so I have a question. Do we get more than a 3 person squad, or is that it?

M'kay, I have learned very quickly that Overwatch is your FRIEND.

Yea, I see now the squads can be larger as well. Quick question though. How do I get into those rooms that house weapons and such that I can see through the windows? I have already rescued the medic girl (forget her name), but I had to bypass all the cool grenades and a gatling gun. I didn't see anything in the actions menu that would allow me to open the doors.

So the only multiplayer requires you to pass the GBA from one player to another? On the one hand, that works in a turn-based game. On the other hand, that blows.

Anyone here play GBA games on a DS? Is there any support for multiplayer GBA games, such as using the GBA link cable? I assume they don't let you play GBA games multiplayer using the DS's wireless connection...that would be too cool. My girlfriend has a DS and I plan to get one at some point, on or before the day Mario Kart comes out.

cartoonin99: I haven't tried that level yet, but did you try blowing up one of the walls with a grenade to gain access?

Can someone explain how the smoke grenades are supposed to work? I tossed one infront of an alien behind a window, and the big cloud of smoke appeared. However, when I walked across where the alien's field of view should have been, my guy was still shot at. I don't know if Overwatch was activated, but it seems stupid that overwatch would work if you've tossed a smoke grenade.

Picked this up on Sunday. I've had time to play it for about 10 minutes, which basically means I've completed the first training mission. First impressions good so far. Basically reminds me of FFT with guns....and without the need to be obsessive/compulsive about leveling up and collecting items.

Would I rather be feared or loved? Easy - both. I want people to be afraid of how much they love me.

Yep I tried to blow up the wall, to no avail. I am well past that level now though, so the point is moot.

Smoke grenades do work, pretty well actually. Overwatch can still be activated through it, but they have a greatly reduced chance to hit you though.

Sounds like a winner, then. If FFT:A has a failing in my eyes, it's that the very thin storyline does not compel me to keep playing once the novelty of the encounters wears off. I still need to finish it sometime, but I'm not sure how much further I have to go. I HEAR that Rebelstar actually has a good storyline?

On a related rant, I hate these various people that feel that a good story is unnecessary in certain genres; why is a good story central to an RPG but extraneous in a strategy RPG? Why do people persist in saying that stories are unnecessary in FPS games (damn you, id, though you be my fellow Texans) even though the most popular FPS ever (Half-Life) was the one that revolutionized storytelling in that genre? Wake up and smell the coffee!

Cartoonin99, I've found that some doors can be shot. I was able to get the gatling gun in the save the medic girl mission but have yet to beat that mission (I am the suxxor). You just target the square in front of the door and fire away. In the same mission I did find some doors that I couldn't destroy (either that or the character I was using was a really horrible shot).

I remember in XCom that all you had to do was click on the far side of the door and a guy would automatically walk up to it, open and go through it. I had no idea this title was out already...hmmmmms.

Thanks V-O and Mixolyde. I will try both ways, as soon as I get past this friggin fire beetle thingy on my current level.

Another note, hand grenades are almost essential on these missions.

You can get through most doors by shooting or hitting them with a melee weapon. I'd recommend targeting the far side of the door rather than the near side. I haven't tried just walking through a door, but I'd be suprised if you could. I should try that though.

The missions definately ramp up in difiiculty pretty quickly, though I haven't had any real trouble until my current one (Bot Factory). Controlling a bunch of low hit point, unskilled, poorly armed bots against an incursion of aliens with tons of hit points and laser weapons isn't exactly a cakewalk :b

Like x-com the ability to destroy walls depends on the power of the weapon. Grenades will only blow through the weakest walls. To get through those harder looking walls takes heavier explosives like the Psi-missile. I played the Rescue mission map in skirmish mode and was quite surprised when a psi-missile flattened a building that grenades couldn't scratch when I did the mission.

I'm liking the game, and while I miss the strategic elements I realize there's only so much they can fit on a GBA cartridge. But then I think about how many megs the original X-com was, and wonder why they didn't do more . . .

I got through the bot factory one on my second try. Those laser weapons are ruthless and I just won the match with the doctor and 1 robot left.

Well, after about a quarter of the way into the game this is going on the "sell" block. I'm just too annoyed with some of the features. Most notably, the ultra-restrictive "line of sight" and the failure of the screen to move to the area where my men are being shot at.

Draco, did you ever play any of the X-Com series? The line of sight thing works the same way in this game. As long as one person in your group is pointed in the direction of an enemy then they won't disappear from the screen. Also, you don't have to waste a partial movement on turning to shoot them when at least one of your guys can see the enemy you want to shoot at, just hit the shoot button and click on the enemy that at least one of your guys can see, and barring any obstacles, you still can hit them with a shot.

No, I didn't play x-com (and I'm sure the 12-year olds playing this game didn't either). The line of sight is just lame. Take the first "real" level, for example, where it's basically a big square hallway and you need to get to the other end. Well, Jorel and the chaingun guy go one way while my sniper chick hangs out near the begining to, you know, snipe. Jorel walks past a door way (window) and stops there. However, he's standing right next to an alien (I discover on the next round), but he can't "see" that alien? Lame

That level got worse. Remember that my team was split-up. I end my turn focused on my sniper chick, and the boys are off-screen. All of a sudden, I hear shots ring out. A lot of shots. Of course, I have no idea where they came from! Who's being shot at? Who's doing the shooting? How much damage? Who knows? Since the damn game won't center on the action.

My turn again, I check on the boys. They've sustained major damage. But there's no one else on screen! I move around and I don't "see" anyone. I waste a whole turn "turning around" to rotate my vision (again, lame) and don't "see anyone." Little do I know that the alien that did the shooting is about 15 squares behind my boys, but also pretty far off screen, and I simply didn't see him when I did my impression of a light house.

Next round, I'm dead b/c of that same dame alien. Also lame that the level ends when Jorel dies. And could they walk any slower? It just drove me nuts. This game has some good ideas and could have been much better, but it just pales in comparisson to recent titles like FFTA, Tactics Ogre and any of the Advance Wars games.

Another thing is the graphics. They were serviceable. Someone on this forum critized the Gamespot review for giving it bad graphics. Well, Gamespot was right. The Final Fantasy remake looks better than this game. After having just finished Zelda: The Minish Cap, I have a new GBA standard for graphics, and Rebelstar isn't it.

Different strokes I guess. I am a HUGE fan of the X-Com series and find the game very enjoyable and reminiscent of the old series.

As for the movement issue, it has a lot to do with the equipment each individual carries, the less each member carries the more they can move.

Graphics wise though I can't help you on. I find them decent but not outstanding, it doesn't detract from the gameplay for me though.

Put that bad boy in the trade list here on site if you haven't already traded it in for another game, I am sure someone here would pick it up pretty quickly.

Some good points about LOS.

Yeah it is annoying somewhat, but that is the nature of the game. I mean someone could post a rant about how stupid it is the bishops can only move sideways while castles can move straight in chess...sure it is arbitrary but that is the game.

Since the same rules apply to both sides I don't see this as that big a deal. I can use that same LOS issue to sneak up behind enemies for the close kill.
