Long story short, this hurricane hooked alot faster than anticipated. It was estimated to hit Ft. Lauderdale at 2 AM. By 8 PM the eye was hitting the city of Hiahliagh (wrong spelling). Then it got nasty.

So far my car port is gone along with a palm tree next to my garage. I can't get out of my house since its flooded along with the inside entrance of my house. Currently there is no power but since I have my router/DSL modem on a UPS I can get online. My laptop battery is at 63% with 2(h):17(m) remaining so I may have time to get some photos up later today.

I can't reach JMDanny so I am a little worried since his area floods pretty nasty, and I can't get in touch with the girl so I am especially worried about her as her town house is almost nothing but glass. I doubt anything happened but you can't help worry about these things.

I tried to go out last night when the eye was at it's hardest but that idea flew away with the car port. My 6'7" 270lb ass was thrown around like a rag doll. Stepping outside for less than a couple of seconds was aking to jumping into a pool for a few minutes while some cruise ship engine was throwing these massive currents.

Hope to post more updates later if I still have battery power. I pray my boat and corvette that I am restoring are ok.

edit: The girl has power and is ok. Her cell phone ran out of battery early on and I will go get her later. She hasn't been out to check her damage but I am not risking it.

edit 2: A major highway that goes east-west is closed since a overpass that was being built collapsed. This will be a pain for sure tomorrow as it is one of the few highways that goes east west and is right south of the airport. But hopefully I won't need to head to the clients in the area.

Ouch Edwin, feel for ya man. I had 3 hurricanes hit me last year. We got lucky; nothing worse than being without power, so we just headed out of the area and stayed at a nice hotel for 3 days.

But being as I've lived in New Orleans and Florida all my life, I'm sorta used to the big blow.

Glad you're okay, Edwin. I haven't really been following the news about the hurricane, but I have heard the phrase "lethal winds" being bandied about - and I thought they were just over-exaggerating (I mean, how can air kill you?). I guess not. Good to know you are alright

Still no power. The corvette is a loss though. The top which is all glass is scratched and cracked along with the windshield. No water got inside but the humidity is getting in. Bleh, and I just paid $2k for a new top.

To quote Ron White, "It ain't that the wind is blowin'...it's what the wind is blowin'." Having lived my entire life in New England, I don't recall a hurricane that was more than a slightly blustery rainstorm, but my sister lived in Florida during last year's season. Here's hoping everybody's okay.

Geez man, hope you can get rebuilt and don't have to do this again for a while. I used to love being in hurricanes, but after a few where the floods came and things blew over and roofs went flying, I decided I'd rather avoid them.

I'M ALIIIIIIIIVE!!!!!

I wanted to post earlier, but I haven't had a chance to get to my computer until now. Lots of work here clearing the debrie(sp?) from the front and back yard as well as the street in front of the house. Luckily, no flooding in this area, but 2 blocks down I hear that the entire area is flooded and people had water in their houses. I have some pictures I'll post later, including that of half a tree that fell on the roof.

Well, important part is no one's hurt here, and we do have power and water. Cellphones aren't working though.

You bastard! I'm coming over. My laptop battery is dying.

edit: The cellphones aren't working because the towers got owned by the storm.

Quote:
Recent Hurricane Hunter measurements show the pressure has dropped significantly, and is now down to 971 mb. Surface winds have increased to 100 mph, making Katrina a Category 2 hurricane. It would be no real surprise to see Katrina attain Category 3 status by this evening, and probably a Category 4 on Saturday.

The forecast track has not changed significantly, with a landfall Monday morning still expected along the end of the Gulf of Mexico's bowling alley, the Florida Panhandle between Pensacola and Panama City. However, two key computer models--the NOGAPS and GFDN--have made a large jump to the west, bringing Katrina over Louisiana. New Orleans can definitely not breathe easy until Katrina makes its turn north and we have a better idea where she is going.

Good luck to the rest of you Gulf Coasters.

Edit to add the map of the computer models mentioned in the quote above...

Note that my comments are relevant as of the post time because I'm pretty sure, based on previous experience, that these images will automatically update over time.

One more edit to add the third map that I'm keeping an eye on just so I can have all 3 on one page.

Here are some of the photos we took today at my house.

Here's the tree that fell on the front of the house. Now, it wasn't the entire tree, it was actually the top of the tree. If it had been the entire thing, the wall would not still be there.

Here you can see our neighboors who were kind enough to help move the tree. The picture's good because it gives you a good perspective at how big this damn thing is. Now when these guys told us that they could help us move it, I thought to myself, "maybe he's got a good truck and some cable. That'd be useful." Oh boy was I wrong. Check out what these guys brought.

I haven't heard from Edwin yet, so I'm guessing his still without power, and his laptop/UPS must've run out of juice.

Sorry about your car, Edwin.

What a weird hurricane - it consistently refuses to do what we're used to. A "minor" hurricane that did shockingly nasty damage to South Florida, *gains* strength after going over a continental landmass, and has now had its target changed by several hundred miles. Bizarre.

The lines for gas started yesterday morning here in NW Florida - it's a safe bet that most of the stations will be out of gas by today and not be refilled until after Katrina passes. The Lowes parking lot was pretty much full pre-7 AM on Friday. Not that we're paranoid now or anything.

So far what I from what I can tell this is more or less the area around me without power.

I'm pretty sure the area is actually much larger than that, but I only went as far as US1, which is that giant road you see going from top to bottom of the right side of the picture.

As you can see the area where my store is located is still without power. My boss says that as long as the store has no power, I won't have work. Although that makes me happy because I have nothing to do this weekend except play games, it means I have no money coming in either.

School supposedly starts on Monday for Edwin and myself. FIU says they've sustained damage, but should still be able to open by Monday.

Will see what deveops overnight. Currently 80% likely leaving in the morning. Taking both vans (our Odyssey and mom's conversion) for 4+2 people so we have the "camping" option available as opposed to being commited to be in location X by time Y for length Z. I like to keep it flexible like that.

For you NO folks, just wanna throw a vote out there for getting outta of Dodge. Lived in Charleston during Hugo, and we went about 150 miles inland and the damn thing was still scary as hell. Had many friends who stayed and who were not that close to water who said it was the longest night of their lives and that they feard for their lives the whole time.

Good luck!

This, of course, is not good. My mother's in a tizzy, trying to get in contact with all of my relatives around NO and Lafayette and convincing them to get the hell out. She's told me stories about Hurricane Camille, which she was stuck in as a kid, and me personally, i'd be running like hell.

Drunkensleipnir talked to his family in New Orleans last night, and as of 10 PM last night, it looks like they're gonna stay put for this one. They're battening down the hatches, stocking up on spam, and preparing the makeshift parasails for Hurricane Parachuting. I think they're crazy, but they're the ones who've been through hurricanes before. I don't know if they'll change their mind now that Katrina's a Cat. 5 storm. So if any of you panicked evacuees sees a bunch of beached New Orleaners who somewhat resemble intoxicated horses, perhaps you might be kind enough to pick 'em up on your way out of Dodge?

*edit: Just spoke with them again this morning. It looks like they are indeed getting the hell out of there. Better safe than sorry.
