I found this site while perusing my KoDT magazine. I haven't had a lot of time to go through the site, but at first glance it seems fairly extensive.

I love boardgames in theory... I bought a handfull and then I realized than I dont have enough friends to ever get use out of them... my all time favorite boardgame is FORMULA DE, which I got to play in a 16 week league at one point... awesome.

Formula De is a great game, Matt. I have a friend in Baton Rouge who's very hardcore about board games, which is good for me since it means I've been able to play all the games I'd like without having to pay for any of them. Some of my favorites so far have been:

Carcassone
Alhambra
Citadels (card game; not collectible)
Settlers of Catan
Twilight Imperium 3rd ed.
Acquire
Shadows Over Camelot
Formula De
Memoir '44
Puerto Rico
Ticket To Ride
War! Age of Imperialism
Civilization
Doom

None of which I find to be quite as good as the all-time best, Diplomacy... but who ever has seven people? That list doesn't come close to exhausting my friend's collection of board games, tabletop war games, and card games. Friends like that are nice to have around!

Me and a couple of friends have recently rediscovered Hero Quest, and I was amazed at how much potential this simple game has. I used to play it with my neighbour at age 12 for an entire summer but now it really has turned into a mini-D&D session at times. The fairly simple rules allow for a broader audience than many "hardcore" boardgames, and as a "DM" I bend the rules when I see an opportunity to make the game a bit more interesting. If you don't have too much experienced board gamers as friends, try Hero Quest.

Hero's Quest is the greatest board game of my youth. My brothers and I would sit around and play it together, and we'd make up stupid non-storylines and throw the dice at the cat, and somehow Ferengis would enter the discussion. Perhaps none of this was intended by the game's creators, but I'd like to think it was. With a bottle of good beer and a bunch of good friends, a night of Hero's Quest will certainly become a memorable one.

Indeed I did. Unfortunately I have not been able to check any of the podcasts out yet, though I intend to.

I have been a fan of KoDT since its SHADIS and Dragon magazine days, well before the KoDT's own magazine came out. Awesome stuff. I still read it cause it reminds me of the various groups that I used to belong to. Sadly I haven't been in a tabletop game for a couple of years now.

They're ok... they've done 2 "beta" casts so far, and the biggest problem is that they're being done by Jolly, the Kenzer guys, etc., who aren't really very good actors. I find them amusing because I'm so used to the strips, but I don't know if anyone who didn't read the book would find them funny.

Call me a nitpicker, but I'm pretty sure the Shadis strips came first, THEN the comic, then the dragon strips... but I digress... I'll have to check my Tales from the Vault issues for dates. In any case, I agree-- it is the only way that I recapture the feeling of my high school and college D&D groups. I haven't played in a game in years either... 3rd edition really passed me by

Nah, Shadis was first, then Dragon magazine got it more mainstream acceptance, enough so that they launched their magazine. I have the first couple Tales from the Vaults as well, you will see they put some of their old Dragon stuff in there as an "extra" to the people who didn't read them before KoDT's own mag came out.

Aren't they back in Dragon magazine again? I know they left for a while, but then I stopped buying Dragon magazine a couple of years ago and haven't kept up with it.

You knew I wouldnt let this go, right?

Looking in the table of contents from TALES FROM THE VAULT #1, the first DRAGON strip is dated February 1996 (issue #226). The earliest comic book I have is issue #2, and Jolly's editorial ends with the date JANUARY 21, 1995. Ergo, I am right

(yes, I AM that petty...)

As for it being back in DRAGON... I don't think so... I flipped through an issue about a month ago and didn't see them in there. BUT... you never know.

I love boardgames, too. As a matter of fact, I'm running a tabletop board gaming convention here in Oshkosh, WI called OshCon (of course) in late October. If you're interested, check out the web site at www.oshcon.org and see what you think.

Anyone here ever play Supremacy? I would run a game of that at OshCon, but the convention is only two days long.

during my rpg days we played a great deal of Hero's Quest with a homebrew rules set combining Hero's Quest and Advanced Melee and Wizard from TFT

It was great for streamlined combat/magic that went perfectly with our mindsets at the time..

That game and of course Talisman.

Wow! That brings back memories. The Fantasy Trip was such a cool, streamline, micro-quest(so called in those days). I played all those folks (was it Metagaming?) games prior to this because they were all neat games. And the one that got me going was their big, 4E science fiction game that has escaped me right now, but how I loved and played that game for all hours. Dang, I can't believe I forgot the name of it. Big stacks of space cruiser's vying for planets and etc.

Aw man, this really makes me wish I had friends to play with. None of my pals are really into board games.

Me and my childhood chums used to TEAR UP some Fortress America, while watching Red Dawn on a loop.

Edit: Also Axis and Allies and Dungeon Quest.

I have a bunch of teachers over every Friday during the summer for boardgames. This past month we've been hitting Wallenstein and Roborally pretty hard. We also stuck in some Puerto Rico, Game of Thrones and Shadows Over Camelot. An interesting change from the usual computer/console gaming we do.
