Nothing beatthe fury of the Aztecs once you *nudged* one of their people.
I can't quite word the music but it was frightening seeing the whole civilization start to close in on you!

Having said that, I found that the recent remake of Pirates! was good, but not as challenging as the original version. I was able to complete the game in a single run-through, getting every family member, every buried treasure, and every scurvy-sea dog before being forced to retire, with time off to get married and max out my titles to boot. You couldn't do that in the original; you simply didn't have enough time (unless you cheated, in which case, you were a scalliwag). Still, its fun enough, and good for a few hours of piratical enjoyment; just don't expect the remake to be as hard as the original.

I have a friend who absolutely refuses to upgrade to XP because he still plays the heck out of Colonization.
EDIT: And just to prove I'm a pack rat to the max, I have the original of both of these buried away somewhere. So I have this every so often treasure hunt looking thru boxes of old games and come across them and hold and reminisce of good times past (and wish I could play it NOW...lol).
I really loved 7cog as well on the C64. The way it used a whole 5.25 floppy disk to draw a unique world that you would slowly sail to and discover, creeping along, running low on food, trading for trinkets, etc, was enthralling.
What a great freakin' game. Warlords III is how I ended up befriending both Pigpen and Shaderaven. Two friends that I've managed to keep up with yet never met.
Actually, Pgpen arrived in the OC last PM so I can now say I've met him and his brood of children.
As I mentioned on several occasions, this game was one of my
all time favorites. If I remember correctly (and that is a stretch)
I think I bought a new rig so I could play it. It was just awesome.

I imagine any BF2 commander looking down on me sees this all the time.
I'll edit this in for the uninitiated:
There was another C-64 game from that era that I enjoyed quite a bit. Damned if I can remember the name, but the map was randomly generated and and devided into territories. They would have defense values and resourses such as iron, gold, horses, wood, etc. This must have been around '86 or '87 and had very simple graphics even for then. Jar anyone's memory?
I played both 7COG and Starflight. Loved them both until the code wore off the disks. I've always yearned for an updated Starflight....Discovering new planets was sooooooo much fun. Ah...good times, good times.
When the original Pirates came out (back in the 80s) I noticed at least a superficial similarity to 7 Cities, mainly based on the map/sailing screen. The gameplay is rather different though.
7 Cities was a great old Dan Bunten game from the days when EA absolutely ruled -- 7 Cities, Archon I/II, MULE.
There was an Amiga port of 7 Cities; never played it though. I think it was just a mild graphical facelift.

what do you do in that game ? i never played it
Classic old game. Gosh, maybe even just ran on Apple, but I think it was a PC one. Can't remember now.
Great game. Too bad most of the young wiper snappers here have no idea what you're talking about. It's kind of like MULE and Wasteland.

Ah the old C64 days! What a great game... I'd like to see a full on remake of this one!
Oh crumbs, I'm all thumbs laying here with you. You're beautiful and busty and I'm a little rusty - I've forgotten what to do...

Perhaps Uncharted Waters, or Uncharted Waters II:Horizons for the Genesis. Those were interesting KOEI games that should be found at underdogs.

perhaps I'm thinking of the Amiga version?

Most recent thing I can think of is Conquest of the New World, which is awesome and runs (begrudgingly) on WinXP through DosBox.
If anyone cares EA did upgrade the game to VGA graphics in a 1993 Compilation pack..

Here is a link to the Dani Bunten Berry memorial page, in case you don't the history of the creator. It's an interesting read, for sure.

Right up there with Meier/Miyamoto/Garriott as one of the true Gaming Gods, IMO.
It's probably not going to be anywhere near the same kind of game as 7 Cities of Gold, but the upcoming Age of Empires III will have the same theme:

And it sure will have purdy graphics:
