I'm looking for some music. Kind of hard to describe. Sort of like death metal without the screaming, instrumental with lots of thrashing guitar etc. Anyone have any suggestions?

LM, it might be helpful if you post a couple of bands that fall into this category that you like. Death metal without screaming and thrashing? Like Sanj said, isn't that what kind of defines the genre?

Prog rock, my friend. Check out Coheed & Cambria and Dream Theater. Some screaming included, but not of the death metal variety. And lots and lots of bitchin' guitar riffs.

Dude, I can probably recommend some stuff if you clarify a bit. Do you want any vocals at all, or are you looking for just instrumental music?

Well, they got the whole screaming thing going on, but that just happens to be what i'm listening to on the IPod here at work. Opeth is another awesome band

Dream Theatre is awesome, I love the album Train of Thought, haven't heard the newest one though.

Yes, they are. I'm looking forward to checking out the new one. \m/\m/

They've still got that death vocals thing going on, though, so they might not be what Lobster's looking for.

Nightwish, Therion - maybe Visions of Atlantis. Very epic stuff. You also may want to check out Adagio, Symphony X, Sonata Arctica or At Vance. some of them even were involved in this one.

I like Dimmu Borgir except for all the screaming, and I really like what I've heard of Podunk's stuff. I'm mostly looking for instrumentals because I generally find lyrics to be shallow and the screaming puts me on edge and hurts my ears.

Perhaps Meshuggah? It not instrumental but the guy monotone shouts more than screams.

Of course if you can handle a little screaming, Pantera are the best band the "Thrash" genre ever produced. Dime and Vinnie were unstoppable machines. Every band since owes them an inspirational debt. (Weird ass euro-death metal excluded)

For heavy stuff that's all instrumental, there's always the good old Shrapnel Records lineup. One that particularly springs to mind: James Murphy (ex-Testament) put out an album on Shrapnel called 'Convergence' that's pretty pissed off. Devin Townsend (Strapping Young Lad) sings on a few tracks, but otherwise it's instrumental. It's pretty decent stuff.

An all-instrumental metal band that I've recently been enjoying a lot is Behold...The Arctopus! They just have two EPs out, but they are jam-packed with shred-tastic goodness. The music is a little out in left field as far as the level of sheer chaos, but the albums are short so your brain doesn't get completely cooked.

Liquid Tension Experiment might also be worth looking into, though they are not quite as hard-edged. It's the Dream Theater guys minus the singer. I believe there are two albums to choose from, I like the second slightly better than the first.

It's only partially instrumental, but I would feel remiss if I didn't mention Fredrik Thordenahl's Sol Niger Within. It's the Meshuggah guitarist's solo album, and it is some mind-bending sh*t. There is some occasional wordless shrieking, but if you can get past that element the album is a brilliant piece of metal/fusion.

There are some good metal bands out there with cleaner singers, but generally the quality of the lyrics is pretty Junior High. If you can get past that, I can recommend a few more bands.

See I was going to pop in and recommend Dream Theatre, with the requirement that you at least check out and listen to a couple of songs from Nightwish.

Dimmu Borgir always irritates me after about thirty seconds, though I've never quite figured out what it is about them that's so bothersome.

How about some Steve Vai? No, not death metal, but a lot of his tracks really shred.
Satriani, too.
And there's always good old Yngwie.

Ooh, I know, get karaoke CDs of metal bands, yeah!

This is why I listen to electronica =) No, not dance music: Tortoise, Squarepusher, Flanger, Medeski Martin & Wood. Out Hud. Generally electronica on the jazz side of things.

A few exceptions lately - The White Stripes. And my other guilty pleasure has been the new Audioslave album.

Just off the top of my head.....

ISIS - This is, as you requested, pretty much death metal without screaming. Without many vocals at all, actually. And those that are there kind of blend into the metal tapestry.

Pelican - Same deal. These guys are a little more proggy, but still kick butt. AND they just put out a new album.

Children of Bodom - OK fine, these guys DO scream, but they sing too, and have some pretty awesome songs.

More to come if I can think of any.......

The F*cking Champs. All thrash guitar, no vocal.

Avenged Sevenfold has some thrashing guitar leads, but not very 'death metal'-like.

or try 'Jud Jud,' an a capella metal-core group.

Did we really get this far in the thread without someone mentioning Isis? Isis is the definition of what you're asking for: instrumental death metal. Stuff like Dream Theater is GOOD, but not what you're describing. See Isis's "Oceanic" album, and "SGNL<05" EP. MOST of Isis is completely instrumental. A select few tracks here and there have some growling vocals, but unlike death metal where the vocals are front-and-center in the mix, Isis vocals are usually in the back of the mix. Like someone yelling in the distance, with a storm between you and him. But again, any vocals at all are the exception rather than the rule.

As for other suggestions.... stuff like Amorphis, Evergrey, Green Carnation, Dream Theater, Fates Warning, and Katatonia are more like "art metal". High quality instrumental work paired with non-growly vocals.

Arcturus' "The Sham Mirrors" is heavy ass-kicking arty metal without the growling.

Opeth has been mentioned. They, along with Maudlin of the Well, are the bands that made me learn to tolerate and even enjoy occasional growly/screamy vocals. Mainly because their music was so dominatingly GOOD that there was nothing they could do to turn me off of it. Opeth is a requirement even if you're absolutely certain you hate growling with all of your soul.

Yeah, so I'm going to end up buying a couple of Isis discs now. I always eyeball these threads pretty carefully for things I haven't heard of before, and they're pretty damned awesome.

The Fear Factory like bit of occasional vocals was off-putting at first because they don't seem to fit with everything else that's going on.

But after listening a little more it grew on me, and the long instrumental sections and the fact that they keep a middling tempo through most of the songs makes them extremely different from what I would normally listen to.

Legion, Necroyeti, thanks bunches. Isis is awesome.

And Somaz.. Opeth is definitely awesome, except for just that one disc. Listen to some stuff from the other discs. They're much better

Weird, when I tried to Ctrl+F the thread in Firefox to look for Isis, it did not pick up your post at all.

Though I shouldn't be surprised with Firefox's "Find" feature being flakey by now.
