The Battlefield 2 expansion has been announced. In other related news: the sky was found to be blue and the sun indeed bright.

Battlefield 2 Speical Forces Interview on IGN

Honestly, I am not very excited about this. I would rather see them focus on patching the game up, rather then concentrating their efforts on an expansion packs that only seems to offer a few new tricks and gimmicks.

That sounds terrible. Yawn.

I would rather have a game that works. The expansion pack should just add some new maps, vechicles, new weapons, maybe a new kit, address some balance issues, etc. How about some new game modes? Are they going to count on the mod community for everything? I think the mods are going to have a hard time catching on if they aren't on ranked servers. The whole ranked thing is a real double edged sword for this game.

OK, that was an underwhelming read. Green light filter + smaller maps. Wee. I assume we won't be able to use the gadgets in normal maps, or see anything really interesting like special forces vs. a conventional army. And the zipline sounds totally cheesy if they're intending it primarily as a means of conveyance.

If this thing retails for more than $20, I won't be getting it. Even then... We might as well just take Ghost Recon breaks.

yeah I completely dont get teh direction of this expansion pack... it completely makes no sense in the context of the current game.

I don't think the announcement of an expansion pack necessarily precludes patching the current game. Sounds like they have two teams: a live team and an expansion team.

The expansion sounds interesting to me. Having access to more of the static structures in the game is important I think, though the l33t ninja grappling hook is a little corny.

I also like the idea of adding more light/dark contrast to the game. Stealth play could really work in a nighttime setting. It would certainly create some tension and suspense. I'm all for it.

Smaller maps are cool as long as vehicles don't appear in them. Foot soldier vs. foot soldier would be a nice change from the constant rush to get into a vehicle before anyone else does.

Worst expansion idea EVAR. Seriously, what are they thinking? This sounds like a console version of Desert Combat, but with green light. The really crazy thing is that so far, I don't feel any expansion is needed. I still haven't played on some of these maps, and the ones I've played a bunch are certainly not old yet. It did say this was DICE Canada, though, so there is a good chance DICE prime will have a real "Road to Rome" type expansion out next year.

I'm most looking forward to the 1.02 patch right now, with some hope for sanctioned autobalance fixes (stop autobalancing the damn squadleaders!!!) and that nasty team/enemy color bug to be fixed. It would also be really nice to see Buddy Lists return (with a color other than green, since Squads have that one now), and some smart Squad features. I think Halo 2 spoiled me a bit on team forming, I really want BF2 to look at your buddy list, and do a best effort to make mutual buddies show up on the same team, possibly with the higest ranked guy with an auto-Squad function, and auto-invites to the members of the buddy list. Also, they should really try to get the ability to swap Squad Leaders added. The guys I regularly play with get confused when I am not the squad leader (stupid auto-balance), and it is a pain to have them leave and rejoin the squad.

Anyway, BF2SF sounds crappy.

Abso-f*cking-lutely. Honestly, this is the stupidest, most non-sensical expansion pack I've ever heard of. And I'm even counting that original C&C where you play as one unit in a deathmatch arena against other units.

So, is DICE/EA trying to be more like Delta Force or Joint Ops (in the special forces/infantry combat) or have they just gone mental? I can't see how this would be very compelling to play in the Battlefield game-universe. The infantry weapon selection currently doesn't favor dismounted/infantry combat the way Joint Ops did. If they change the weapon balance, they had better do it in a patch so the normal BF community doesn't get pissed off.
And no new gameplay modes? What the hell is that? This is the ultimate half-assed cash-in.

As it stands right now, I'm not the least bit interested in this. I really expected them to use the fantastic Battlefield engine for a simulation of Europe or North America. Not... more Middle East stuff.

Edit: Weapon Rant...

Oh? You're adding the FN SCAR? Big, mother-f'in' deal! The Ghost Recon 2 stand-alone expansion pack is already doing that! They're adding the SCAR-L, SCAR-H, and SCAR DMR (whatever the hell the sniper version is called), and it's actually going to be modeled correctly! So don't come here tootin' your own horn about how you cleverly snagged the newest weapon to roll out of FN when you still have an utterly bizzare and non-sensical weapon selection in your main game.

Wow. Yawn. Is this being developed by the same people who did planetside? Same dev process. Make a decent squad-based battlefield combat game, filled with bugs. Then put out a terrible expansion with zipdoodads and ninjaropes before you get the original fixed. Maybe they think they can distract everyone from the bugs by putting out this "new" game. Sounds pretty crapass to me. If you're gonna do ninja-stealth, play Splinter Cell. Isn't the whole goal of special forces to use their skills to prevail over larger conventional forces? This would be much cooler if they had some way of setting up a specforces vs. conventional army where the conventional forces would always have twice as many players to counter the lack of nightvision, etc. Sounds like a snoozer as-is.

JimmDogg: PS - Who the hell is Skeletor9000? That never gets old for me.

The more I think about this expansion, the more it seems like a mod than anything else. These guys have been working with the open source code (I assume they had full access to BF2 code since they are making an "offical expansion", could be wrong on that thought though) for months now and this is what they come up with? In an expansion pack, I'd like to see MEC and China turning tables on USA, and invading Southern Texas to secure access to strategic oil fields, or maybe mounting a daring assault on the ancestral lands of island of Manhattan. Yep, that should be fun.

Yeah, I guess I'll just chime in and reiterate the thought that there are any number of games that already do the "special forces" thing brilliantly. Why anyone thinks we would need that in BF2 is beyond my comprehension.

I've only read a couple pages, but what a gyp.
Night vision and nighttime maps - JO had this at the start.
Flashbangs to disorient and really mess with NV goggles - JO had this.
I wonder if the night maps will be temporally static or if time will pass, like in JO.

Also, BF2 has the Spec Ops guy - is this materially different from a whole gameplay mode of Spec. Forces, or are they just making new maps that really take advantage of a couple of new kit items while removing the high powered vehicles from the main thrust? Sounds like a mod to me.

Also, the zipline thing. WTF? Now we're going to have BF2: Spiderman Edition? They're talking about using it as a way to really... er, zip across the maps on foot... great, cause what I really want from my infantry combat game is to feel like it's Tarzan vs. Spidey.

While I see the appeal of the grappling hook and zipline, and it would definitely be useful in city maps, they are, up front, describing it as a way to be Peter Parker, PFC. Ugh.

And nothing I read looks like anything other than a fairly well-managed, focused mod. In fact, I'd bet some enterprising group will release this as a mod before or close to the same time EA releases the XP.

Come think of it, "Invasion: USA" ex-pak is pretty much inevitable. Considering the current trend of every publisher coming up with a hip urban flava or their flagship intellectual properties, it is only a matter of time before we see some sort of BF2: San Andreas, with US Tha 54th Armored Dogz troops pitched in a gritty, ostensibly urban, take-no-prizonaz warfare against PRC Red Dragonz spec-ops posse in LA Chinatown or something.
