I dont think the PS3 will ship with a Blu-Ray drive...
Simply from a cost perspective.. I'm not sure how Sony is going to get manufacturing costs down far enough to get a $1000+ drive mechanism into a $300 device in time for a Spring 2006 release.
From what I understand the Dev kits that are being used now (early dev kits though) are DVD based and the storage spec's Sony is recomending to developers is based on a 9GB optical.
More importantly is Sony really going to risk a somewhat high end bleeding edge device into what is essentially a mass consumer level product (despite the hype)
As it stands the PS3 will be the first consumer level Blu-Ray drive shipped in mass quantities.. is that really such a good idea simply from a quality control standpoint?

Sure! Just remember, if you turn the machine upside down, it helps!

It shouldn't ship with one. I really don't see next-gen DVD drives reaching the mainstream until even the generation of consoles *after* this upcoming one. People aren't ready for a format switch yet; everyone's still replacing all their old VHS movies with the impulse buy versions in the Target check-out line. Yes, people bought the PS2 in large part because they saw it as an opportunity to upgrade their Playstation and get a "free" DVD player. But the timing was much better; everyone wanted a DVD player and they hadn't yet become inexpensive. The timing is different now, and Joe BestBuy doesn't see the need to buy a whole new DVD player and move to another format.

I have to say I'm with Joe BestBuy here. I'm also not ready for a format change, nor am I willing to buy two different players if both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray appear at once and certain movies are only available on one disc type. That will piss me off something fearce.

I hope they don't do it.
Won't someone think of the children?!
Beyond the serious manufacturing/cost concerns, a Blu-Ray drive would be near-completely pointless right now. Even high-definition computer games fit on one DVD just fine and the HDTV-less masses aren't exactly going to be kicking doors down to upgrade to a format that offers them virtually no benefits.
Everything can be debated, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's debatable.

But then again, what's with those PSP movies I see in the advertisements? Are people really buying movies in a format that can only be watched on their portable game system? Maybe we're getting to the point where there are enough people slavering for new technology that offers the slightest improvement over the old to make it worthwhile to produce such things. (In other words, maybe we're finally catching up with Japan.) Well, keep pushing the envelope, you crazy bastards!
i agree with baggachipz, when they reach a level of 'understanding' of the technology of blu-ray for a large videogame, it will be time for the PS4. it also may be fiscally responsible for them to not do it. just look at the most recent games for the PS2 and XBox, by the time it's mastered, the next systems are here.
I also think all of the doomsayers and Kutaragi himself are throwing up red herrings about pricing for the system, and it will release at a decent price point.

I bought Napoleon Dynamite on UMD. It is the only movie I think I will ever buy in the format, because, let's be honest here, it deserves to be played on a PSP.

Why the hell would you want the PS3 as a router? Most people already have one (I didn't know the PS3 would be a router till today).

exactly...it was simply hype nonsense to "appear" cooler than the competition during E3...
Basically some tech terms thrown about...
next is the dual 1080P output via the dual HDMI ports...
I just discovered the manufacturing cost of 1000+ units on the HDMI circuitry...
