Single Player RPG
Wednesday, June 29th, 2005 - 2:43pm
I've been looking for a single player (Yeah, anti-social... I get it.) RPG since BGII. But here's the kick, it has to be AS GOOD AS BGII. Yeah, that's the stuff.
I've played: (In no particular order)
Planescape: Torment
BG1&2 (Sword Coast and ToB included)
Icewind Dale 1&2
Elder Scrolls up to and including Morrowind and it's expansions.
Fable (XBOX)
Did I miss anything worth having?
Aio, quantitas magna frumentorum est.

Gothic II
Xbox Live Gamertag : Barab
EVE: Hannibal Dax
Fallout and Fallout 2 if you haven't tried those yet.
Added: Nox
Septerra Core

If you're open to console RPGs, I'd suggest Skies of Arcadia.

Divine Divinity and Beynd Divinity, Beyond being the better of the two.

I'm not a huge PC gamer, but I thought NEVERWINTER NIGHTS was a fun diversion... the best part of NWN for me was all of the user created content... when you finish the main game, you can download dozens of homebrewed quests to play through.

J/k... I have not yet started playing the game but the free soundtrack that came with the game is very good!
Wow, Adaman... you rule! From your list I was only able to finish 2 of them.
Planescape: Torment - Finished it 3 times and consider one of the best RPG ever.
BG 1 - Gave up 10 hours in.
BG 2 - Gave up 30 hours in. Man what the hell, even if NPC sneeze towards my party... everyone is dead!
Icewind Dale 1&2 - I have a copy... that is far as I got.
Elder Scrolls: Morrowind (+expansions.) - Nope, got lost in the game... and so did the game cd.
Fable - 42 hours, finished it!
I think my problem is that in BG, Morrowind, etc... If you stop playing for more than a week, it's kind of hard to remember where you left off and where you need to go.

they invented these things called pens/pencils and paper ya know! You can write stuff down... of course I never do and have the same problem you do... so that pretty much kills my point

I guess I just have an addictive personality. Once I start a game I tend to dedicate my gaming time to it until I finish. I've given up on relativly few games.
Never the Divinty series or Gothic...guess I'll give them a shot.
Fallout(s) and Nox were great. Although I'd have to say that for sheer immersion Morrowind was my favorite of all time. Maybe I should dust off the old NWN and download some user stuff.
Thanks for the input.
Aio, quantitas magna frumentorum est.
I'll also reccomend Gothic 2 and throw in an Arx Fatalis to boot.

This game deserves a lot more attention than it's gotten. It's highly playable even in beta form. Sometimes I play it "just until some goodjers are in BF2" and end up playing 'til it's way past time for me to go to bed. I'm kind of ashamed of that, but it's a really addictive little game. Not to mention people will soon be modding the hell out of it.
JimmDogg: PS - Who the hell is Skeletor9000? That never gets old for me.

Yes, Mount and Blade deserves lots of attention!

You are a laugh a minute, Outter Space Man.
As for recommendations, give Sacred a try. It's not as deep a RPG as the Baldurs Gate series, but it's fun as hell. Be sure to download and install the latest patch, though, if you buy a bargain bin copy. There's also an expansion out for it now in Europe that's scheduled for US release in a couple of months.

Dunno. But I really hate that kind of crap. That sort of thing is an automatic deal breaker with me.
Kinda like Atari not offering replacement disks for my scrathced NWN ones.

I am right with you... I am 90% finished Xenosaga. 75% done baldurs gate 2.
1/2 way done final fantasy 10, arx fatalis and gothic II.. and so on......have about 10 characters at various points in morrowind.. I feel like I can't restart them because i have NO CLUE about what's going on.. I can't tell you how many times i sit here at work thinking i should get back into "..." but hardly no where to start
It's got to be attention deficit..
the only one's i ever finished were system shock II , Grandia II(dont ask me why)and planescape:torment
Adaman- have you tried system Shock2?

I see where you're coming from, but I've got too many games to play to worry about someone trying to dick around with my money using DRM. I'll just stick with the 5-6 games I still have to play in my stack.

What the hell are some of these titles? What happened to Final Fantasy X, Grandia II, Disgaea, Kingdom Hearts, Star Ocean 3? I know Fallout is great but what the hell is Cloven Crania Meadow...alot of these titles just sound like terribly wrtten fantasy novels.

Oh yeah, because Grandia II and Final Fantasy X are better than poorly written fantasy novels.
Gothic might be one of the best RPGs ever created. Star Ocean 3 is not. And let's not get me started on my rabid fanboy rant about System Shock 2, and how it cures the common cold.

In role playing game, are we talking about ATB? Or Myst-style? Because when I've seen Gothic is stores, it doesn't seem like the RPG standard, rather an adventure game.
edit: What the hell is system shock 2?

Are you guys talking about Nox, the game that looked like a Diablo ripoff where you played some average guy who got dropped into a fantasy world, or something? because I hated that game.

That game was bloody awful. I sincerely hope nobody recommended that.

Oh. My. God.
Go here and be saved, my child. Oh, and Gothic is most definitely an RPG, it just has a different perspective than, say, Baldur's Gate or Final Fantasy.
