WTF is up with Gamefly?
Saturday, June 18th, 2005 - 11:17pm
My Q isn't updating, I'm not recieving new games and they're not returning support question emails. I've been pleased to date with their level of service, but this month it seems like they've given up. Have I missed something? Did the recent quakes wipe Inglewood from the face of the Earth? Will I actually have to -gasp- pick up a phone and talk to them? Please, god no.

Odd, I've had no trouble. I hate to even suggest, but this might require the use of a telemaphone.

Naah your account is just fine and I have been receiving the games quite promptly, we do need to talk about some of the games in your Q.

Why in the world would you conference call Gamefly support?!?

On Saturday I got a notification that my credit card was declined and my GameFly account is on hold, which is BS because there's plenty of money in the account, and there has been as long as I've been a subscriber. I've updated the account info and sent Gamefly two emails in the last two days. I haven't received any response, and I am pissed because Destroy All Humans is now available and it's not getting sent out. Jackasses. I tried to call them, but noticed that the 1-800 number listed on their site a couple of months ago has mysteriously disappeared...

Maybe they went bankrupt paying for all those lame commercials on G4. I swear I Tivo past 3 of them ever commercial break during XPlay.

UPDATE: So they claim to have shipped a game over a week ago and it's still a no-show. meanwhile they say that for "some reason" my account wasn't auto-updating and that they've fixed the problem and are shipping another game out (and a replacement of the missing one) today. Plus they've pushed my bill date back ten days as some sort of consolation. It's not a credit though. Sure seems to me like the service is starting to unravel.

Yeah. I want to support the service and all, but this is their last chance with me.

I've been thinking of getting rid of my Gamefly service. I'm not really unhappy, it's just that there are so many games to play that I already have, it takes a week or so for turnaround, I'm running out of Gamefly games that I really want to play, and with my Blockbuster movie service, I get two cupons a month that I can use to mess around with video games. I wouldn't be surprised if I'm no longer a customer in two months or so.

Ooo, tell me about these coupons. I've been pondering joining a Netflix-type service...if Blockbuster gives me a couple of free game rentals to boot, they may just have landed a new customer.

I felt like this about a year ago when I dropped. My turn-arounds started ballooning out from their previously decent 4-6 days to over a week and sometimes 2 (!). It's a disappointment because the service as a concept is so perfect for gaming, but without further distribution points it is in many ways not worthwhile to a large segment of the population.

It is a pretty sweet deal. The coupons allow for a one-week rental of a video game at your local blockbuster. You can also rent videos, but... I've never done it. I always use the coupons for games. At least at my Blockbuster, they have a pretty good selection of newer games. Since this is in addition to the standard movie rental by mail thing, and for about $15 a month, I'm pretty happy with it.

even WORSE is that the xplay dupes now actually shill for GAMEFLY during the show itself... every episode i've seen the last month or two has one of them saying something like "this game gets a 3 out of 5... perfect for renting! Renting from Gamefly! Sign up now!" Of course, they make some self-depricating remark about how they're "selling out" after they plug Gamefly, but never the less they STILL plug it.
I've never been interested in this service simply because I live in the midwest and the midwest always gets screwed when it comes to these disc-by-mail services. You'd think that instead of spending money an advertising they'd use it to open more distribution centers... I might think about it if I could have a 2-3 day turnaround like the westcoast people seem to get.

I just sent back my last batch of Gamefly discs. Their service is terribly inconsistent (from one to three week turn-around!), and my upcoming move was just the excuse I needed. Once I'm on the west coast, I'll re-evaluate - or maybe go with Blockbuster instead?
Interestingly, I got an email from Gamefly today asking me to tell them when my game arrives. Maybe they've been getting complaints and they're trying to improve things? Whatever the case, I doubt I'll be keeping the service much longer.

My billing issue has been fixed. It still sounds like the place has been overrun by zombies, or monkeys, or maybe zombie monkeys, though. I'll give 'em a few more weeks to regain control of their operation. If things don't improve, I'm bailing.

I just cancelled my account. Yey!
Even then it took three different confirmation screens (are you sure? how about the 1-disk rate instead? now why would you go and cancel your account like that, are you absolutely positive?) to get them to cancel service. As if nagging me could do anything other than make me even more pissed off at them.
Day 12 - no replacement games. I just fired off an email suggesting that their method of "pushing back" the bill date will not satisfy me at this point. They hosed me like this a few months ago by registering a "Keep It" as a "Buy It" after which it took almost two weeks for me to get a replacement game. If I get the games soon and they appropriately compensate me for the total absence of service, then I'll give them a third chance. At this point I have paid for almost half a month of service during which I have not been enjoying said service. This would be like your landlord asking for a month's rent in advance and not letting you move in until the middle of the month. I'll post the email thread after this all shakes out.

*Update* Two new games have arrived today. Thirteen days later. One of them is a brand-spankin' new copy og Destroy All Humans which I'll probably elect to Keep for the low, low price of $36.99. Thereby working the system a little in my favor. Hooray for working the system. After that, if they haven't offerred to buy my forgiveness, I'll probably close my account.
