Games Re-discovered

Since we have a "forward-looking thread", I thought I'd institute a "backwards-looking" one....

I pulled "Majesty" and "Majesty: The Northern Expansion" off the shelf before going on vacation last month, installed them on my laptop, and I've had a blast re-playing it on a faster system with better graphics.

Dated (a bit) but a very different "take" on how to manage your fantasy kingdom.

I went back through Starcraft's singleplayer game a few months ago. I'd forgotten how much I completely loved that game.

It's not "different" like your re-discovered games, but it certainly is a lot of fun

That is one of my favorite games of all time. A great idea and made well. I did not think anybody else had played that one!

I just finished System Shock 2 this week for the first time.

I tried to rediscover Drakan a week or 2 ago, all I ended up discovering is that the game is bloody awful. Just atrocious, yeecchhh.

My days of not taking you seriously have certainly come to a middle.

After downloading a HLmod and installing it, and furiously cursing Steam for not letting me play it on HL2, i realized it was a mod for the original HL, so i've ben playing that a wee bit lately.
I've rediscovered that i'm really awful at FPS games after a 3 year hiatus.

I've been playing the Gamecube remake of Metal Gear Solid (The Twin Snakes). All the interminable cutscenes, mindless codec conversations, melodramatic posturing, overwrought dialogue, and other Kojima nonsense remain wholly intact, but this time around they're enhanced by some very sharp current-gen graphics. It's a whole new way to be irritated by the game.

In honor of San juro, I fired up Civ2 last night and ... hated it. I guess I've put too many hours into Civ3 or something, but I just couldn't get into Civ2 again. I used to pull all-nighters with it too. Stranger. I no longer know who I am.

seems to be more geared towards PC gaming, but I've recently been sucked back into Warhawk for the PSX, NiGHTS for the Saturn. and i've lost my Japanese version of Cobra Command for Saturn:

the days of pushing quarters into the Cobra Command machine in the three-door garage/ game room at Peter's Pond on Cape Cod, nestled right amongst Gottlieb's Haunted House, Satan's Hollow, pool, Sprint (B/W,) Monaco GP, ping-pong, Targ, and the other classic- Star Rider:

huh. brings the nostalgia to get all misty-eyed about the mid 80s.

I'm currently a little strapped for cash (thank you, Mr. Martin!), so my HD is brimming with old titles.

I started a few of the mods for BG2 and got back into the core game along the way, only to be drawn in by Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom. It's not that old, and thus in that sweet spot where polish and nostalgia meet.

And if I haven't seen further, it's because those bloody giants blocked my sight.

Been rediscovering Myth 2 lately, actually. One of my all-time favs. Also, Battlezone 2. That game hasn't held up as well as I thought it would, but it's still bloody awesome. If I got back a bit further, I was played through Soul Reaver 2 and The Longest Journey earlier this year.

I largely skipped out on playing PC games for a number of years, so I've been going back and playing what I missed. Currently I'm playing Grim Fandango and Planescape: Torment. Both excellent games that can more than hold their own today.

Are these both XP compatible? They're just two of the classic need-to-play titles on my list.

I had no problems with either on XP. I did go to some webpage that someone suggested in a thread here for a patch for Planescape, but otherwise I didn't do anything special.

Ah, the best way to play Thief, for sure! I'm still kicking myself because I only completed Thief: TDP on Hard difficulty. I've tried to get myself started again on Expert (I even have the added incentive of Thief Gold's extra missions), but for some reason I just haven't been successful. Greater determination is required, methinks.

I haven't played any oldies in a while, but I have Giants: Citizen Kabuto stashed away in my cupboard. I'm mighty tempted to check it out (never played before), especially given all the positive reactions I've seen here.

I never played Planescape, but Grim Fandango is one of the 3 best games of all time. Damn shame there was never a sequel...

I installed "Total Annihilation: Kingdoms" and its sequel, "TAK: The Iron Plague" over the weekend and have been playing it anew. Wow! What a difference a good graphics card and a higher-speed processor make! Actually kind of fun to play, instead of the laggy mess it used to be.

Oh, I know full well most people disliked it intensely- mainly because it was *very* buggy when first released- and sank Cavedog, RIP- but I always liked the 4-faction/swap chapters storyline and the steampunk stuff from "The Iron Plague"- gotta love the ironclad ships and the steam-powered armor guys.

I loaded up Soldier of Fortune 2 last night. It's sort of ugly and simplistic by today's standards, but it's hard to top taking off arms and heads and torso chunks with a 12 gauge.
