English Civil War- Any computer simulations available?
Tuesday, June 7th, 2005 - 9:48am
That's a period/conflict that I'm interested in, on both strategic and tactical levels; but I don't believe there are any computer games out there in the market that address it (or the Thirty Years' War or the Eighty Years' War either).
Any suggestions? Recommendations? Have I missed one?
Thanks....

Europa Universalis 2 covers that era on the strategic level (and 200 years either side of it). Paradox games are a love'em or hate'em thing though.
Someone did an excellent conversion of War of the Roses (DOS) a long time ago (base on the excellent boardgame by Avalon Hill). I have a terrible memory, but it seem's to me that in the last year or so I read on-line about one available somewhere, but darn if I can remember it's name. I'll try and look around to see if I save the post or see it in Google somewhere. (and ask a friend who is a fan of this era also).

Try Kingmaker
Cyrana Mage 80 ~ Artesia Druid 80
Cyranna Shaman 80
That was it! Geesh. Can't believe I forgot the name (well I guess I
can nowadays). Great boardgame. Can't remember the DOS game, but I think it was pretty decent.

One of my favs as well Donan. Now to only find the time and opponents to play those oldies with!
Cyrana Mage 80 ~ Artesia Druid 80
Cyranna Shaman 80
I loved that game...never played the PC version.. only the board game.

Wrong ECW! I'm asking about the one with Cromwell and King Charles I, 1640-1648....
I *loved* "Kingmaker" as a boardgame....still quote card "storms at sea, ships take refuge at nearest port"......

EU2 still covers it, with events and all.
Maybe Horse and Musket? Problem is, it's 18th century; but maybe someone has modded it?

Cossacks: European Wars is of the correct era, but it's an RTS, so it may not be what you want.
Over the Hills is interesting, but it's more of a computerized set of board game rules than an actual computer wargame.
I agree that this is one of the most interesting periods in English history, as well as one of the most underrepresented in computer games. There are some compelling options available for board gamers, but I'm not finding much in the way of computer games.

Lobo, thanks for the suggestions; I'd bought Cossacks I from the bargain bin because of the ECW mods- bit I disliked the game system and interface so much that I just uninstalled it and moved on.
I'm really looking for something turn-based. That being said, I have Norm Kroger's "Age of Rifles" on my back-burner to install on a WinXP system; I *think* there might be ECW mods for that, but I am not sanguine about getting it to run, to begin with.
Yes, we have many boardgame options; but no computer options.....
